On PS5, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets and choose Performance Mode. This sets a preference for smoother motion in games that offer performance and resolution modes; it does not force every game to run at 60 frames per second. To inspect your display connection, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
Set the PS5 game preset to Performance Mode
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.
- Select Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, then choose Performance Mode. Sony describes Performance Mode as making game motion smoother, while Resolution Mode prioritizes higher graphics quality. The preset applies only to PS5 games that offer these modes. Sony’s guide to customizing PS5 game presets.
- Launch the game. If it has its own graphics or frame-rate settings, check there for a performance, frame-rate, or graphics-mode option. A game may handle these choices separately, and the console preset cannot guarantee a particular frame rate.
Check the PS5’s current display signal
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the current video output signal and the connected HDMI device information to see what the PS5 detects. The console automatically detects TV capabilities and selects the best available resolution; you can also change the resolution in this menu. See Sony’s PS5 resolution and video output guide.

These settings show the video connection and supported capabilities, not a guarantee that a game is rendering at a particular frame rate. Game performance depends on the title and its available modes.

Frames per second (fps) describes how many frames a game renders each second. Hertz (Hz) describes the display’s refresh rate: a 60 Hz display refreshes up to 60 times per second, while a 120 Hz display can refresh up to 120 times per second. A 120 Hz connection is not required just to target 60 fps; a display that supports 60 Hz is sufficient for that target.

In the PS5’s Video Output settings, the 120 Hz Output option enables 120 Hz video for displays and games that support it. That is a separate capability from choosing Performance Mode, and does not by itself make a game run at 120 fps. Sony’s video output guidance.
Troubleshoot a missing 4K at 120 Hz signal
These checks apply when you specifically want 4K at 120 Hz; they are not prerequisites for ordinary 60 fps gameplay.

- Confirm that the display and the HDMI port you are using support 4K at 120 Hz.
- In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, and Video Transfer Rate to Automatic.
- Connect the console with the included HDMI cable or a suitable Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, and make sure it is connected to a compatible port on the display. Sony’s resolution guide covers these signal checks.
When VRR or ALLM matters
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) can synchronize a compatible display’s refresh rate with the PS5’s graphical output. Sony says the feature is for HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors; support and behavior depend on the display and game. Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) also requires a compatible TV.
