Sometimes—but an app that no longer gets updates becomes a less dependable choice as security flaws emerge and go unpatched. The risk depends on what the app can access, what data it handles, whether it connects to online services, and whether your phone’s operating system still receives security updates. For banking, work, health, identity, passwords, or private messages, switch to a maintained alternative if one is available.
What does “no longer gets updates” mean for safety?
It does not mean the app is automatically compromised or will stop working immediately. It means its developer may no longer provide fixes. If a security vulnerability is discovered in the app, it could remain unpatched, leaving users exposed to exploitation. CISA warns that continued use of end-of-life software can pose consequential risk and recommends retiring end-of-life products: CISA’s guidance on patches and software updates.

An app can keep opening, remain listed in an app store, or continue connecting to its service without receiving security maintenance. Those facts are not proof that the app is currently supported or safe.

1. Verify the app’s support status
Look at the developer’s support page, release notes, store listing, or any explicit end-of-life announcement. A long gap between releases can be a warning sign, but silence alone does not prove the developer has abandoned the app. Check for a current support statement and whether the app still receives security fixes.

2. Check the phone’s operating system separately
App support and operating-system support are different. An app may stop receiving updates while the phone still gets OS security patches; a maintained app may also be running on an unsupported OS. Check whether the manufacturer or platform still supplies security updates for your device and OS version. If the OS is unsupported too, the exposure is broader than one app, so avoid sensitive activity on that device and consider moving to a supported one.
Support can also affect compatibility. Google Workspace says its apps may continue to operate on older OS versions on a best-effort basis, but apps running on an OS that is no longer supported might stop working without notice. That guidance applies to Google Workspace apps, not every mobile app: Google Workspace mobile app updates.

3. Consider the data, permissions, and connections
Be more cautious when an app handles financial, health, identity, work, password, or private-communication data, or has access to files, location, microphone, camera, contacts, or accounts. An offline utility with little sensitive data and few permissions generally has less at stake than an app that holds valuable information or communicates with a service.

4. Match your response to the consequences

There is no universal numerical risk score or safe/unsafe cutoff. The app’s version, support status, vulnerability history, data practices, permissions, your device, and your OS version all matter.
Do app-store protections or listing rules make an old app safe?
No. Apple describes App Store review, code-signature checks, and system protections for iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS. These measures provide platform safeguards, but they do not prove that an app’s code has no vulnerabilities or that its developer still fixes them: Apple’s app security overview.

Store availability is also separate from maintenance. As of October 7, 2026, Google Play’s policy generally requires new apps and app updates to target Android 16/API 36 or higher starting August 31, 2026, with exceptions for certain form factors. Apps below applicable target thresholds may no longer be discoverable to new users on newer Android versions, while people who previously installed affected apps can still discover, reinstall, and use them on Android versions the apps support. This distribution policy does not show whether an installed app is receiving security fixes: Google Play target API requirements.
Update or remove the app safely
- If an update is available, install it from the official app store or the developer’s verified site. CISA advises using trusted vendor sources and warns against update links or attachments in unsolicited email and advertisements. See CISA’s update guidance.
- If you are switching apps, move any necessary data through the old app’s documented export process, then check that the new app is maintained and obtain it from its official store or verified developer source.
- If you are removing it, uninstall the app, delete data it stored where possible, and revoke account connections or sessions that the app no longer needs.
When choosing whether to keep, replace, or remove an app, weigh the sensitivity of its data, its permissions and network access, the developer’s support status, OS support, the trustworthiness of alternatives, and the cost if the app stops working.
