How to Choose a Battery Energy Storage System for a Solar Project

Select a solar battery energy storage system by modeling the service, power, usable energy, duration, coupling architecture, degradation, safety listing and lifecycle economics against site-specific data.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a battery energy storage system (BESS) by starting with the service your solar project must deliver, then sizing power, usable energy and duration from site data. Compare AC- and DC-coupled designs using the same efficiency and degradation boundaries, and make safety listing, code adoption, interconnection and lifecycle cost conditions of procurement—not afterthoughts. There is no universally correct battery size, duration or chemistry.

A defensible selection requires time-series photovoltaic (PV) output, load or market data, export limits, tariffs or market rules, dispatch requirements, site constraints and comparable vendor proposals. Without those inputs, a specific kW, kWh, payback or “best” chemistry would be guesswork.

What a BESS does in a solar project

Solar generation and electricity demand rarely occur at the same time. A BESS stores electricity when it is available and delivers it later, allowing a project to shift energy, control peaks, limit PV variability or provide backup. The U.S. Department of Energy describes storage as an enabling technology: Grid energy storage systems are ‘enabling technologies’; they do not generate electricity, but they do enable critical advances to modernize and stabilize the electric grid. (Energy Storage Safety Strategic Plan, 2024.)

Storage is therefore a means to a defined operating objective, not a standard accessory to a PV array. A battery designed for evening energy shifting can have a different power rating, state-of-charge schedule and warranty profile from one designed to carry a critical load through an outage.

Typical services

  • Solar shifting: charge during high-output midday hours and discharge during evening demand or higher-value price periods.
  • Demand-charge management: discharge during a customer’s monthly or interval peak, subject to tariff rules and reserve requirements.
  • PV ramp and export control: smooth changes in output or keep site export below an interconnection limit.
  • Resilience or backup: maintain selected loads during an outage, often with a reserved state of charge and black-start or islanding controls.
  • Grid services: provide regulation, frequency response, capacity or other market products when the interconnection and market rules permit.

Choose one primary service and identify secondary services. The primary service sets the dispatch schedule, response time, reserve requirement and acceptable cycling pattern.

Step 1: Translate the project goal into a storage requirement

Write a short operating specification before requesting bids. It should state what the battery must do, when it must be available and what it may not do.

Questions the specification must answer

  • Which loads, meters or points of interconnection are served?
  • What events trigger charging and discharging: solar surplus, a demand threshold, a market price, an outage or a grid command?
  • How much power must be delivered or absorbed, and for how long?
  • What minimum state of charge must be reserved for backup or grid services?
  • How many cycles, partial cycles and high-power events are expected each day and year?
  • What availability, response time and restoration time are required?
  • May the battery charge from the grid, or only from co-located PV?
  • What export, import, interconnection and tariff restrictions apply?

Document seasonal differences as well. A summer demand-management schedule may conflict with a winter resilience requirement, and a market rule may limit simultaneous participation in two services.

Power, energy and duration: the ratings that determine size

Power is the rate of charging or discharging, expressed in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (MW). Energy is the amount stored, expressed in kilowatt-hours (kWh) or megawatt-hours (MWh). Specify charge power and discharge power separately when they differ.

Nominal duration is approximately:

duration (hours) = energy capacity (MWh) ÷ discharge power (MW)

The calculation is meaningful only when the two ratings use the same basis. A nameplate 40 MWh battery may provide less usable energy after minimum and maximum state-of-charge limits, conversion losses, temperature limits and degradation.

Use the correct energy basis

  • Nameplate energy: the manufacturer’s rated capacity under stated test conditions.
  • Usable or dispatchable energy: energy available between the permitted state-of-charge limits at the specified power and temperature.
  • Delivered AC energy: energy measured at the project’s AC boundary after conversion and auxiliary consumption.

Require vendors to state the basis for every number. For example, “100 MWh” is not enough: the bid should identify usable DC or AC energy, initial and end-of-life values, minimum state of charge, discharge power, temperature and measurement point.

An illustrative calculation

If a project must discharge 10 MW continuously for four hours, the minimum delivered-energy requirement is 40 MWh at the stated AC boundary. The installed nameplate will generally need to be higher after accounting for the usable state-of-charge window, inverter losses, auxiliary loads and end-of-life degradation. This is a sizing illustration, not a recommendation for a particular project.

Step 2: Build a site-specific dispatch model

Use at least one year of appropriately resolved data—often 5-, 15- or 60-minute intervals, depending on the service and tariff. The model should include:

  • Measured or bankable PV generation, including clipping and curtailment;
  • Site load or market price and ancillary-service data;
  • Interconnection import and export limits;
  • Tariff demand windows, energy prices, ratchets and market participation rules;
  • Charge and discharge power limits and ramp rates;
  • Minimum and maximum state of charge and backup reserve;
  • Battery, inverter, transformer and auxiliary losses;
  • Temperature derating and availability assumptions;
  • Calendar and cycle degradation, augmentation and replacement timing; and
  • Outage scenarios, if resilience is a service.

National Laboratory of the Rockies’ System Advisor Model supports multiple battery chemistries, dispatch choices and degradation or replacement modeling. The Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program’s evaluation method uses metered data to assess realized operation. These tools help test a design; they do not remove the need for project-specific inputs.

Run scenarios, not one forecast

At minimum, test base, conservative and stress cases. Vary solar resource, load, price spreads, demand peaks, export limits, availability, degradation rate, auxiliary consumption and replacement cost. For a market project, test lower revenues and fewer dispatch opportunities. For a tariff project, test a shifted peak that occurs outside the planned discharge window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the dispatch objective and constraints for every run. A result from a model that allows unrestricted grid charging cannot be compared directly with one that permits PV-only charging.

How many hours of storage do you need?

Duration follows the service rather than a universal rule.

Primary objective What sets duration Important constraints
Demand-charge reduction The length and shape of the customer’s peak intervals Peak timing uncertainty, tariff ratchets, recharge opportunity and reserve
Solar shifting Hours between PV surplus and the targeted evening or price window PV energy available, charging source, clipping and seasonal production
PV ramp or export control The duration of ramps, curtailment periods or export congestion Power response, control latency and interconnection limits
Backup Critical-load power multiplied by the required outage time Load priority, outage probability, recharge during an outage and islanding capability
Market or grid services Product rules, dispatch duration and required energy reserve Telemetry, response time, state-of-charge headroom and market qualification

The National Laboratory of the Rockies 2024 Annual Technology Baseline uses a four-hour duration as a default utility-scale PV-plus-battery modeling configuration. That is a modeling convention, not a recommendation for every project or a guarantee of field performance.

AC coupling or DC coupling?

Coupling determines where conversion occurs, which sources may charge the battery and how the system behaves at the point of interconnection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Consideration AC-coupled arrangement DC-coupled arrangement
Typical equipment PV inverter and separate battery inverter or power-conversion system (PCS) on the AC bus PV and battery connected on the DC side with a shared or coordinated conversion path
Charging source Usually can charge from PV or grid, subject to controls and interconnection rules Often enables direct PV charging; grid charging depends on the architecture and controls
PV clipping capture May require additional AC capacity or curtail clipped energy Can capture some PV energy that would otherwise be clipped or lost at low-voltage conditions
Retrofit suitability Often easier to add to an operating PV plant with an available AC interconnection Can require DC equipment changes, coordinated controls and compatible inverter hardware
Main trade-off More conversion stages for some charge paths, but flexible dispatch and clearer separation of assets Potentially better PV energy capture, with tighter equipment and control integration requirements

Model the actual charge paths rather than assuming one architecture is always more efficient. The 2024 ATB uses different modeled round-trip-efficiency assumptions for grid charging and coupled-PV charging; it cites 85% for grid charging and 87% for coupled-PV charging in that model. Those are assumptions tied to the modeled configuration, not product guarantees or universal technology results.

Questions for an architecture review

  • Can the battery charge from PV, the grid, or both under the interconnection agreement?
  • Does the architecture capture clipped PV without exceeding inverter, transformer or export limits?
  • Which inverter controls islanding, black start, reactive power and anti-islanding protection?
  • How are PV and battery state of charge coordinated during curtailment or an outage?
  • Can the design be expanded, augmented or replaced without replacing the PV inverter?
  • What telemetry and control points does the utility or market operator require?

Chemistry and technology choices

Lithium-ion batteries made up the bulk of new storage deployments described in the Department of Energy’s 2024 safety plan. The same plan notes interest in other technologies for long-duration applications, resource considerations and safety characteristics. Treat that as a description of deployment at that time, not proof that lithium-ion is optimal for your project.

Instead of selecting chemistry by headline energy density, compare the chemistry and enclosure against the duty cycle, ambient conditions, fire-safety design, usable energy at end of life, warranty throughput, augmentation plan, supply chain and service capability. A technology promising long duration may have different round-trip efficiency, footprint, response, replacement or permitting implications.

Normalize vendor performance claims before comparing bids

Require every bidder to complete the same data sheet and use the same dispatch case. A performance number is not comparable until its measurement boundary and conditions are explicit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Bid item Required detail
Energy Nameplate and usable AC energy at commissioning and at the warranty end date; minimum and maximum state of charge
Power Charge and discharge kW/MW, continuous and short-duration ratings, ramp rate and power factor range
Duration Hours at the specified power, with the same energy basis and temperature assumptions
Efficiency Round-trip efficiency boundary, test procedure, auxiliary load treatment, charge source and operating point
Degradation Cycle and calendar assumptions, annual capacity retention, throughput limits and end-of-life definition
Warranty Capacity, availability and throughput guarantees; exclusions, remedies and measurement method
Augmentation or replacement Timing, equipment scope, outage duration, cost responsibility and integration plan
Availability Guaranteed availability, planned maintenance, response time and service-level obligations
Controls Energy-management system, supervisory control, communications protocols, telemetry and cybersecurity responsibilities

The Federal Energy Management Program’s method defines efficiency as discharge energy out divided by charge energy in and evaluates capacity ratio against rated capacity adjusted for minimum state of charge. Agree on the project’s measurement boundary before issuing the request for proposals.

Check the complete system, not just the battery cabinet

A BESS is an integrated system: battery modules and racks, battery-management system (BMS), inverter or PCS, protection, thermal management, controls, communications, transformers and enclosures all affect safety and operation.

Compatibility checks

  • Obtain the exact listed or certified configuration, including battery model, BMS firmware, PCS or inverter model, protection devices and control interfaces.
  • Confirm that the inverter is listed for the battery input source and chemistry.
  • Verify that the inverter input short-circuit rating covers the contribution from the battery and BMS.
  • Check DC voltage, current, grounding, isolation, fault-clearing and communication requirements across every operating mode.
  • Require installation instructions, wiring diagrams, protection settings and commissioning procedures for the proposed combination.
  • Define who owns integration testing when components come from different suppliers.

UL Solutions Code Authorities warns that using a listed PV-only inverter with a battery without further investigation can violate NEC 110.3(B) and create fire and electric-shock hazards. Its guidance states: No, that would be a violation of NEC 110.3(B) and may present considerable fire and electric shock hazards without further investigation of an inverter’s compatibility with the battery bank and battery management system for compliance with UL 9540, the Standard for Safety of Energy Storage Systems and Equipment. A PV inverter listing alone does not establish battery suitability.

Safety, fire testing and permitting

Resolve code and emergency requirements during concept design. Ask the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), fire officials, utility, insurer and project engineer which editions and local amendments apply. U.S. code adoption is local; publication of a new edition does not prove that a jurisdiction has adopted it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documents and questions to obtain

  • System certification and listing scope for the exact battery, BMS, PCS, controls and enclosure combination;
  • UL 9540A test reports or other fire-propagation evidence required by the applicable code;
  • Site plan showing separation distances, access, egress, equipment clearances and emergency shutoffs;
  • Ventilation, gas detection, explosion-control and thermal-runaway mitigation design, where applicable;
  • Detection, suppression, water supply and fire-department connection requirements;
  • Hazard analysis, emergency response plan, signage, first-responder information and training;
  • Inspection, commissioning and functional-test records required by the AHJ or insurer; and
  • Utility protection, anti-islanding, relay, metering and interconnection evidence.

UL distinguishes UL 9540 system certification from UL 9540A fire-propagation test methodology. UL reports that the sixth edition of UL 9540A was published on March 13, 2026, and that the 2026 edition of NFPA 855 and the 2024 edition of the International Fire Code reference UL 9540A in specified cases. Confirm which editions and provisions your jurisdiction has actually adopted, and follow the project-specific direction of the AHJ.

Evaluate lifecycle economics

Compare total lifecycle value rather than the equipment purchase price. Build a dated, geographically relevant model that includes:

  • Battery, PCS or inverter, transformer, enclosure and balance-of-system cost;
  • Interconnection studies, utility upgrades, civil work, foundations, fire protection and permitting;
  • Engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and owner’s engineering;
  • Electricity losses and auxiliary consumption;
  • Operations, maintenance, monitoring, insurance and communications;
  • Capacity degradation, augmentation, inverter replacement and battery replacement;
  • Availability impacts and lost revenue during maintenance or replacement;
  • Tariff savings, avoided energy cost, capacity value and eligible market revenue; and
  • Decommissioning, recycling and site-restoration obligations.

Stress-test the assumptions that most affect value: price spreads, demand peaks, dispatch frequency, export limits, degradation, availability, replacement cost and market participation. Do not publish or approve a single payback or revenue number without project-specific data and a dated model.

A practical procurement workflow

  1. Define the service and success metric. State the primary service, secondary services, operating schedule, reserve and availability requirement.
  2. Assemble project data. Gather PV and load or market time series, one-line diagrams, interconnection limits, tariffs, site conditions and outage assumptions.
  3. Set the rating basis. Specify usable AC or DC energy, continuous and peak charge/discharge power, duration, state-of-charge limits and end-of-life requirements.
  4. Model alternatives. Compare AC and DC coupling, charging sources, dispatch strategies, losses, degradation, augmentation and replacement.
  5. Issue a normalized request for proposals. Give every bidder the same duty cycle, weather assumptions, measurement boundaries, warranty horizon and required data sheet.
  6. Perform system-integration review. Verify battery, BMS, PCS, protection, controls, communications, transformer and utility interfaces as one listed configuration.
  7. Obtain code and safety confirmation. Give the AHJ and fire officials the exact equipment and test documentation; resolve siting and emergency requirements before purchase.
  8. Score lifecycle value. Apply consistent assumptions for installed cost, losses, service revenue, degradation, availability, augmentation and replacement.
  9. Contract measurable guarantees. Define capacity, efficiency, availability, response, throughput, test procedures, remedies and change-control responsibilities.
  10. Commission and verify. Test operating modes, protection, communications, islanding or backup functions, metering and the agreed performance boundary before final acceptance.

Common selection mistakes and corrections

Choosing a battery from PV size alone

A 10 MW PV plant does not imply a particular battery power or energy rating. Correct the mistake by sizing from the service, load or market profile, export limit and dispatch schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling nameplate energy “usable”

Correct it by reporting usable energy at the specified state-of-charge window, power, temperature and warranty date, with conversion and auxiliary losses identified.

Using four hours as a default design

Four hours is the 2024 ATB default utility-scale modeling configuration, not a universal recommendation. Model the actual duration required by the service.

Comparing efficiency percentages with different boundaries

Correct it by agreeing whether efficiency is measured at the cell, DC bus, inverter terminals or project AC meter and whether HVAC, controls and standby loads are included.

Assuming a PV inverter can accept a battery

Correct it by checking the exact listed combination, battery input compatibility, short-circuit ratings, protection and installation instructions.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving permitting until after equipment selection

Correct it by involving the AHJ, fire officials, utility and insurer during concept design and obtaining the required fire-test and emergency-planning documents before procurement.

Ignoring end-of-life performance

Correct it by modeling degradation, augmentation, replacement outages, warranty throughput and the capacity needed at the end of the project’s operating life.

What to put in the final decision record

Keep a decision file that another engineer can audit. It should contain the service definition, data sources and time resolution, dispatch constraints, coupling comparison, rating calculations, vendor assumptions, normalized performance table, lifecycle model, code correspondence, safety documentation, interconnection studies, risk register and acceptance-test plan.

The record should explicitly identify unresolved items: project location and code authority, PV and load or market data quality, export limits, operating-life and availability targets, site safety constraints and any proposal that does not provide comparable evidence. Those gaps are reasons to qualify a design, not reasons to fill in a generic battery size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The right BESS is the one that can deliver the project’s defined service at the required power and usable energy, through its warranted life, with a compatible listed system, an approvable safety design and lifecycle economics that survive conservative scenarios. Set those requirements from site data before choosing chemistry, duration, coupling architecture or supplier.
