How to Choose a Battery Backup for Your Wi-Fi Router

Choose a router battery backup by totaling the power needs of your router, modem or ONT, and other essential network devices, then verify UPS capacity, runtime and compatibility.

To choose a battery backup for a Wi-Fi router, first list every networking device that must stay on, then add their power requirements and choose a backup with enough watt output and a manufacturer-published runtime at that combined load. An AC UPS suits equipment powered by its usual AC adapters; a DC mini UPS can be smaller, but only when its voltage, current, polarity and connector match the device. Keeping your equipment powered does not guarantee that your internet provider’s network will remain available.

Which devices need backup power?

Make an inventory of the equipment required for your connection to work. Depending on your setup, that may include the router, a separate modem or fiber ONT, mesh nodes, access points and network switches. If the modem or ONT loses power, a working router alone may not keep you connected.

Check each device’s power label or manufacturer specifications for its power demand and input requirements. Add the loads of all devices you plan to connect; that combined figure is the starting point for choosing a UPS. Do not assume a typical router wattage: the materials cited here establish no broadly applicable consumer-router power figure.

How much UPS capacity do you need?

Compare the UPS’s output capacity in watts with the combined load of your equipment. Schneider Electric recommends choosing output watt capacity 20–25% above the connected load. That is the vendor’s sizing guidance, not a universal regulatory requirement. Schneider also states, “A UPS should have a VA rating higher than your total device watt load.” VA and watts are distinct ratings, so check both the unit’s watt limit and its VA rating rather than treating one as a substitute for the other. For example, if the labels and specifications for your devices add up to a given watt load, apply Schneider Electric’s recommended headroom to that total and confirm the candidate UPS can supply it. The example is a sizing method, not a claim about how much power any particular router or modem draws.

How long should the backup run?

Decide how long you want to bridge an outage, then consult the manufacturer’s runtime chart for the specific UPS at your combined equipment load. Runtime depends on both battery capacity and the connected load; adding devices generally reduces how long the battery lasts. A full-load or half-load estimate should not be extrapolated to a much lighter networking load unless the manufacturer provides data for that condition.

As a model-specific example—not a general router estimate—Cradlepoint lists a 56.62 Wh battery with estimated runtime of up to eight hours per fully charged battery for its E100 Series at 17 W discharge power, and for its E400 Series at 25 W discharge power. These figures apply to those named router series and their specified battery; the documentation does not state a year. Cradlepoint Battery Specifications

AC UPS or DC mini UPS?

AC UPS

An AC UPS is the straightforward option when your router, modem or other equipment runs from its supplied AC adapter. Plug the adapters into outlets that provide battery backup, and confirm that the UPS has enough backed-up outlets for every device. Check the regional plug and voltage as well as whether bulky adapters will fit beside one another.

DC mini UPS

A DC mini UPS can avoid an AC-to-DC adapter stage for compatible equipment. Do not choose one on voltage alone: for every device, verify the output voltage, available current, polarity and connector. Check the modem or ONT requirements too. A mismatch on any of these specifications can make the unit incompatible. TP-Link guidance on choosing a mini UPS

What practical features should you check?

  • Battery-backed outlets: Count the outlets that remain powered during an outage, not the total number of outlets. Some UPS models include surge-only outlets that do not provide battery backup.
  • Battery service: Check whether the battery is user-replaceable and whether the manufacturer supports runtime expansion with external battery packs. Both features vary by model.
  • Status and alarms: Review the unit’s indicators and alarms so you can tell whether it is running on battery or needs attention.
  • Fit and placement: Account for adapter size, outlet spacing, regional voltage and plug type, and a practical location for the equipment and backup unit.
  • Model documentation: Confirm every claimed feature and the runtime at your actual load in the specific model’s manual or runtime chart.

These features are model-dependent; Schneider Electric’s buying guide discusses backed-up versus surge-only outlets, replaceable batteries and external battery packs. Schneider Electric UPS buying guide

Will a battery backup keep your Wi-Fi and internet working?

A UPS can keep your local networking equipment powered, but internet access also depends on the internet provider’s outside equipment and neighborhood infrastructure staying online. A home battery backup cannot guarantee service through a wider outage affecting that network. Consumer Reports on Wi-Fi during a power outage

A simple way to compare candidate backups

  1. Write down every device that must remain on and its documented power demand.
  2. Add the loads, then compare the total with each UPS’s watt output capacity, leaving the headroom recommended by Schneider Electric.
  3. Check the manufacturer’s runtime chart at your combined load and the duration you need; do not infer runtime from a different load point.
  4. Choose AC outlets or compatible DC outputs, then verify all electrical and connector requirements for every device.
  5. Check battery-backed outlet count, regional plug and voltage, adapter spacing, battery replacement or expansion support, indicators and alarms.
