Can You Tip Flight Attendants? Airline Rules and Etiquette

Tipping flight attendants is not expected, and airline rules differ. Check current carrier guidance before offering cash or a gift; a thank-you or specific compliment is an easy alternative.

Usually, passengers are not expected to tip flight attendants. Whether a crew member may accept cash or a gift depends on the airline’s rules, which can differ and change. Check your carrier’s current guidance before offering anything; if an attendant declines, don’t insist. A courteous thank-you or a post-flight compliment is an easy alternative.

Are you supposed to tip flight attendants?

No. Tipping is not a standard expectation for routine cabin service. Travel + Leisure’s April 2026 discussion with crew members says tips are never expected and notes that some airlines may prohibit accepting them. A tip also should not be treated as payment for a free drink, an upgrade, or preferential treatment.

There is no single rule for every airline. Policies can vary by carrier and may change, so an old news report or another airline’s policy is not a reliable guide to your flight. If you are considering a tip, check the airline’s current guidance or ask a crew member politely without putting them on the spot.

What have airlines said about accepting tips?

Publicly reported examples illustrate why it is safest to check the current rule rather than assume. The examples below are historical reports or attributed crew accounts, not a verified list of airline policies in force today.

Airline What was reported How to interpret it
Frontier AFA-CWA’s January 4, 2019 statement discussed an onboard tipping option and a change in how tips were distributed. Condé Nast Traveler reported in January 2019 that Frontier had introduced tipping through its onboard tablet payment system, with crew members keeping tips directly from January 1, 2019. These are reports from 2019; they do not establish whether the program remains active.
United The Points Guy quoted a United representative saying employees could not accept tips under the policy reported at that time. Condé Nast Traveler said in 2019 that United had no plans then to introduce tipping. Neither report confirms United’s current policy.
American Condé Nast Traveler reported in 2019 that American asked team members to decline tips if offered. This does not establish current tip or gift rules.
Southwest A Southwest flight attendant interviewed by Travel + Leisure in 2026 said tips may be forbidden under company policies. This is an interview-based crew account, not a published official policy.
Delta Condé Nast Traveler reported in 2019 that Delta had not responded to its inquiry at publication. No policy can be inferred from that silence.

For a named airline’s current rules, rely on that carrier’s latest guidance rather than these dated examples.

How much should you tip a flight attendant?

There is no standard amount because passengers are not expected to tip and airline rules may restrict acceptance. Don’t feel obliged to offer cash for ordinary service. If you have confirmed that your airline permits tips and still want to give one, offer it discreetly and accept a refusal immediately.

A tip should never be offered with the expectation of a particular service outcome. As AFA-CWA International President Sara Nelson put it in a January 4, 2019 statement, “Flight Attendants are certified for our safety, health, and security work. Safety is not variable and therefore base compensation for a safety job cannot be variable.” That is the union’s position on compensation, not a universal regulation.

What can you give or do instead?

  • Say thank you. A direct, courteous expression of appreciation is appropriate and requires no policy check.
  • Send a specific post-flight compliment. Travel + Leisure reports that feedback naming a crew member may reach supervisors. Use the airline’s feedback channel and identify what the attendant did that you appreciated.
  • Consider a gift card only after checking the rules. Interviewed crew members have mentioned gift cards as an alternative, but limits vary by airline; confirm what is allowed before giving one.
  • Avoid homemade food gifts. One American Airlines flight attendant told Travel + Leisure that homemade food not sealed by a manufacturer is discarded under that attendant’s protocol. This is an interview-reported practice, not a universal airline rule.

For broader context on the distinction between safety work and variable gratuities, see AFA-CWA’s January 2019 statement. Historical carrier accounts appear in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2019 report and The Points Guy’s tipping discussion. For interview-based etiquette guidance published in April 2026, see Travel + Leisure.
