How to Choose a 4X Strategy Game: Mechanics, Learning Curve, and DLC

Choose a 4X game by the decisions you want to make: historical city growth, fantasy tactical battles, or science-fiction exploration and empire design. Compare mechanics and check DLC prerequisites before buying.

Choose a 4X game by the decisions you want to make, not by an unsupported claim that one is easiest. Civilization VI focuses on turn-based historical empire-building; Age of Wonders 4 combines fantasy realm management with tactical battles; and Stellaris puts exploration and empire design in a science-fiction galaxy. The best starting point depends on whether you want to develop cities, direct battles, or shape a spacefaring civilization—and whether a specific add-on is worth buying for your platform.

What makes a game 4X?

“4X” is a useful family label for strategy games built around exploration, expansion, developing or exploiting resources, and competition or conflict. The balance varies: one game may emphasize city growth, another tactical combat, and another exploration and diplomacy. Treat the label as a guide to the broad loop, not a promise that every game handles each element in the same way.

Compare the games by their core decisions

Game Setting and campaign What you spend time deciding Battle emphasis
Civilization VI Historical civilizations develop from settlement toward a chosen victory path. Where to settle, what to research, and how to develop cities and their surroundings. 2K describes it as a turn-based strategy game about building an empire that can stand the test of time. 2K’s announcement Conquest is one part of empire growth; the cited product description does not establish detailed comparative combat mechanics.
Age of Wonders 4 Fantasy realms where you create factions and develop them through choices and magical tomes. How to grow your empire and shape a realm, alongside decisions in turn-based tactical battles. Explicitly central: battles range from encounters with roaming monsters to sieges. Paradox’s feature page
Stellaris A spacefaring empire explores a procedurally generated galaxy. Surveying systems, investigating anomalies and events, conducting diplomacy, customizing species, and designing ships. Paradox’s feature page Fleet design and interstellar warfare are part of the game’s systems.

Which 4X game should you start with?

Choose Civilization VI for historical empire-building

Start with Civilization VI if the appeal is guiding a historical civilization through settlement, research, city development, and a victory goal in a turn-based campaign. Its central decisions are about how to build and advance an empire over time.

If you are also comparing it with Civilization VII, note a substantial change to the series framework: the official support article says players choose a leader and civilization independently, then change civilizations across Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern Ages. The choice is partly about whether you prefer continuity of one civilization across a campaign or an Age-based transition. Civilization VII: How to Play

Heroes of Land, Air & Sea 4X Strategy Board Game, with Miniatures, Ages 14+
  • CONTROL YOUR UNIQUE FACTION - Choose from humans, dwarves, elves, or orcs in the base game, each with distinct abilities, buildings, and playstyles.
  • EPIC 4X STRATEGY GAMEPLAY - Explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate your opponents to build your empire and prove your tactical prowess on the battlefield.
  • IMMERSIVE HIGH-QUALITY MINIATURES - Bring your war to life with beautifully sculpted miniatures for your serfs, warriors, heroes, and flying & water vessels.
  • BATTLE WITH STRATEGIC TACTICS - Engage in intense warfare using a hidden tactics card system, adding a layer of cunning and prediction to every conflict.
  • EXPANDABLE FANTASY WORLD - The highly-regarded base game can be expanded with additional factions and modules, such as Order and Chaos, for even more replayability.

Choose Age of Wonders 4 for fantasy factions and hands-on battles

Age of Wonders 4 is the clearest fit if you want to create a fantasy faction and make tactical decisions in turn-based battles as well as manage an empire. Its battles include both smaller encounters and sieges, while its realms can be explored or created.

Choose Stellaris for a science-fiction sandbox

Stellaris suits players drawn to exploring a galaxy and defining what their empire is like. Its official feature descriptions call out survey ships, anomalies and quests, procedural galaxy content, diplomacy, species customization, and ship design. Those interconnected systems are useful comparison points; they do not, by themselves, prove that the game is objectively more or less difficult than the others. Paradox Support describes it as the company’s first game set in space and updated its article on September 16, 2026. Paradox Support: What is Stellaris?

How to think about the learning curve

The official sources used here do not provide a comparable measurement of beginner difficulty for all three games. Rather than treating “easiest” or “hardest” as settled facts, match the type of learning to what you enjoy.

  • Turn-based decisions: Civilization VI is described as turn-based, and Age of Wonders 4 explicitly has turn-based tactical combat. The available descriptions do not fully document Stellaris pacing settings, so check the current game details if that distinction matters to you.
  • System breadth: Decide whether you want to learn city development, tactical battles, diplomacy, species traits, fleet design, or some combination. These are more concrete expectations than a broad “simple” or “deep” label.
  • How involved battles should be: Age of Wonders 4 explicitly asks players to engage with tactical turn-based battles. Stellaris highlights fleet design and interstellar warfare. Civilization VI’s cited description emphasizes empire growth and victory paths rather than detailed combat.
  • Available help: The PlayStation Store listing for the PS5 version of Age of Wonders 4 lists adjustable difficulty, tutorial reminders, pausing, and manual saving. These are documented aids for that PS5 listing, not evidence that it is the easiest game overall or that every platform has identical options. PlayStation Store: Age of Wonders 4

A practical fit-based rule: if a documented mechanic sounds appealing and you are willing to learn its related systems, that game is a reasonable place to start. It is a recommendation based on play style, not a measured ranking of genre difficulty.

How to choose DLC and editions without buying the wrong thing

Before purchasing an add-on, check four details on the store page for your platform and region:

  1. Base game: Confirm whether you already own it and whether the add-on requires it.
  2. Bundle contents: Read the included-game and included-content list rather than relying on the edition name.
  3. Prerequisites: Check whether the feature you want also requires another expansion or pack.
  4. Platform and region: Make sure the listing applies to your console or PC storefront and region; catalogs and bundles can differ and change.

Civilization VI

2K’s add-on page says the base game is required for add-on content and identifies prerequisites for some Leader Pass features. Its Anthology listing bundles the base game with Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, several passes, and other leader and scenario packs. Verify the current contents and any requirements on the store where you plan to buy. Civilization VI editions and add-ons

Age of Wonders 4

The PlayStation Store listing accessed on October 7, 2026, showed PS5 editions, expansion passes, and separate add-ons. Its Starter Edition text names the base game, Dragon Dawn, Empires & Ashes, preorder content, and Archmage Attire. Treat that as a platform- and date-specific listing, not a description of PC, Xbox, or every regional catalog. Check the current PS5 listing—or the relevant store for another platform—for the exact bundle and included content. PlayStation Store: Age of Wonders 4

Paradox’s official pages establish the game’s systems and link to add-on navigation, but the available information here does not establish a complete current DLC inventory or a definitive order in which expansions should be bought. Decide which specific mechanic you want, then check the current edition and official catalog for your platform before purchasing an add-on.
