Its documented controls cover several different things—Yahoo News App feed preferences, personalized ads, account data, commercial-email-based personalization, and location—and should not be treated as one universal switch. Yahoo’s help material does not identify a dedicated setting to turn off homepage story recommendations.
Why am I seeing recommendations on my Yahoo homepage?
Yahoo Help says: “Articles in ‘For you’ are recommended based on your recent activity.” Yahoo does not specify a complete list of activity signals or explain how its recommendation algorithm weighs them, so it is not possible to identify a particular action as the reason a specific story appeared.

The homepage also includes other kinds of content, such as trending news and searches, local weather, horoscopes, stocks, and sports scores. Yahoo describes trending stories as ranked by the amount of news coverage. These items are not all described as personalized “For you” recommendations.

The reviewed Yahoo homepage help information explains how recommendations are based on recent activity, but does not document a homepage-wide control for disabling them. Yahoo’s ad-personalization opt-out is separate; Yahoo does not say that turning off customized ads disables homepage story recommendations.

Can I change what appears in the Yahoo News App feed?
Yahoo News App users can adjust selected interests and filter content by blocking publishers or keywords and phrases in article titles. Yahoo’s instructions say users must select at least five interests. These are News App feed controls, not universal settings for the desktop Yahoo homepage.
- Interests: Review the interests selected for the News App feed; the described control requires at least five.
- Publishers: Block publishers whose articles you do not want in the feed.
- Keywords and phrases: Block terms appearing in article titles.
How do I turn off personalized ads on Yahoo?
Yahoo documents customized advertising separately from story recommendations. It says ad relevance is determined by preferences and account information shared in Ad Interest Manager, and that users can opt out of customized ads to receive generic ads instead. The ad icon on supported ads can explain why an ad was selected and direct you to preference controls; Yahoo also says feedback on supported ads can help adjust future ads.

Look for Yahoo’s Ad Interest Manager and its customized-ad preference. The exact interface may vary by region or change over time. Opting out concerns advertising personalization; it does not, according to the reviewed Yahoo help material, switch off the homepage’s “For you” stories.
Where are Yahoo privacy controls, and what can they do?
Yahoo’s Privacy Dashboard and Controls let users inspect and manage how account-associated information is used with Yahoo products. Yahoo says users can view summaries associated with products or devices and, for many products, follow a link to account settings to edit information.

Yahoo also lets users request a download of account information. Yahoo Account Help says the download may take up to 30 days to become available, and the completed file remains available for 30 days. Yahoo says the export is provided in JSON. The availability period is Yahoo’s stated process estimate, not a guarantee of when an individual request will be completed.
Does Yahoo use commercial email data to personalize content?
Yahoo’s Global English help says enabling the use of commercial email data can personalize ads and content across Yahoo sites and services. Yahoo describes these as structured messages from retailers and other organizations, and says it does not analyze emails from friends and family for this personalization purpose.

The setting is in the Commercial Email Insights and Analysis section of Privacy Dashboard and Controls. Yahoo says disabling it does not remove ads or content; those may be less relevant. This preference is distinct from both homepage story recommendations and the customized-ad opt-out.

Yahoo Help documents a toggle for precise location information in Privacy Controls. Yahoo’s app overview says enabling device location services can support customized content, including relevant nearby deals. That does not establish precise location as a signal for homepage news recommendations; location is a separate privacy preference and may affect some app content.

Why might the controls look different?
Yahoo cautions that its privacy policies vary by country. Available preferences and their wording may therefore differ by region, and interfaces can change. Use the Yahoo account controls and privacy policy applicable to your location rather than assuming a setting documented for another country will be available to you.
