To reduce Yahoo’s use of your data for personalized ads, open Yahoo Privacy Controls, review the advertising options, and—if you want to opt out of Yahoo interest-based ads broadly—use both opt-out buttons in Yahoo’s Ad Interest Manager: one under “Across the web” and one under “on Yahoo.” These choices do not remove all ads, stop all data use, or control every other advertising network.
The control descriptions below reflect Yahoo’s U.S. documentation. If you are outside the United States, check the privacy controls and policy Yahoo presents for your region; options and legal bases can differ. Labels may also change.

Open Yahoo’s advertising controls

Go to Yahoo Privacy Controls, also called the Privacy Dashboard, and sign in if you want the choice associated with your Yahoo account.

Open the section for Personalized Advertising. Review the separate controls there rather than treating “tracking” as one universal switch.

For a broad opt-out of Yahoo interest-based personalization, open Yahoo’s Ad Interest Manager and select the opt-out under both the Across the web tab and the on Yahoo tab. Yahoo’s FAQ recommends both because custom interest categories created for advertisers may not appear in the visible category list.
Yahoo Help describes the outcome as opting out of customized ads so that you see generic ones. The individual controls below address different data or purposes, so select the ones that match what you want to limit.

What each Yahoo control changes

Why two opt-out buttons matter
Yahoo’s Ad Interest Manager FAQ says its standard interest categories can be based on your use of Yahoo services, pages you visit, ads you view or click, Yahoo searches, and keywords in communications. The visible category list may not include custom interest categories created for advertisers. For that reason, Yahoo says people seeking to opt out of all Yahoo interest-based personalization should use the broad opt-out button in both locations: Across the web and on Yahoo.

What opting out does not do

It does not stop ads. Yahoo may still show generic advertising, and partner ads may remain personalized if the relevant partner controls are not changed.

It does not stop all data processing. Yahoo says information may still be used for fraud prevention, security, analytics, research, service improvement, and attribution.

It does not delete the data behind an ad preference. For example, turning off ad personalization based on search history does not itself delete that history.

It does not disable data use needed for every Yahoo feature. Location or communications analysis may still support functions such as service features, spam filtering, or security.

Keep the choice saved in your account or browser
Yahoo says an opt-out enabled while you are signed in is associated with your account and refreshed when you sign in. It can apply across multiple browsers and devices you use to access Yahoo. If you do not use that account-associated choice, you may need to opt out separately in each browser.
A browser-stored choice can be affected by cookie handling. Yahoo says clearing cookies may remove an opt-out unless the persistent, signed-in choice is in place. Cookie-blocking or tracking-protection features can also interfere with browser-based choices; Yahoo recommends using Privacy Controls if that happens. If the setting no longer appears to hold, sign in and check the account’s advertising controls again.
Yahoo controls are only part of ad privacy
The Yahoo settings described here address particular Yahoo advertising uses. They do not promise to stop collection by every site, app, browser feature, or independent ad network. If your goal is to limit advertising beyond Yahoo’s services, review the privacy controls offered by the other services and networks you use as well.
