How to Choose a 4TB SSD for a Large PC Game Library

A practical comparison of four 4TB NVMe SSD options, with motherboard-fit checks and a clear distinction between manufacturer speed ratings and game-loading evidence.

For a large PC game library, a 4TB internal NVMe SSD is a practical way to add substantial storage without sacrificing the responsiveness of solid-state storage. The TeamGroup MP44 4TB, WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB and Samsung 990 PRO 4TB are plausible choices; the WD_BLACK SN7100 4TB is another model to include when checking current listings. No current price or stock data establishes a value winner, and the available specifications do not prove that one drive loads games faster than another.

Check compatibility before comparing drives

These are M.2 NVMe SSDs, so confirm that your motherboard has an available, compatible M.2 slot and supports the drive’s PCIe generation. The Samsung 990 PRO 4TB is listed as PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 and NVMe 2.0; the SN850X 4TB is an M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4 drive. Check your motherboard manual for slot support and any restrictions on which slots can be used alongside other components.

Also check cooling and clearance. The SN850X is sold in distinct heatsink and non-heatsink versions. A drive with an integrated heatsink may suit a board without an appropriate M.2 cooler, while a motherboard’s own M.2 heatsink may be the better fit. Confirm dimensions and clearance for the exact drive and board before ordering.

“Up to” sequential speeds are manufacturer-rated maximums, not guaranteed results in every PC. They describe sequential transfers, not a game-loading test. The available sources do not provide controlled, directly comparable loading measurements for all four 4TB models, so the headline ratings alone cannot identify which one loads games faster.

How to choose between the models

Start with the exact fit

Rule out any drive that does not fit an available motherboard slot or conflicts with its cooling hardware. For the SN850X in particular, distinguish the heatsink and non-heatsink variants when checking a retailer listing. Match the capacity and model number, not just the product-family name.

Compare current cost, not a supposed price winner

Prices and stock are not established by the cited sources. Compare live listings for the exact 4TB model and calculate price per terabyte by dividing the current price by 4. Include any price difference for an integrated heatsink, and confirm the seller, return terms and regional SKU before buying.

Use warranty and endurance as tie-breakers

TBW means terabytes written: a published endurance rating for the amount of data written over the drive’s rated life. The SN850X, 990 PRO and SN7100 are each listed at 2,400 TBW in the cited manufacturer sources, though the sources differ in what warranty information they provide. SanDisk lists a five-year limited warranty for the SN850X. For the other models, check the current warranty terms for the exact SKU and region rather than inferring them from another capacity or market.

Treat editorial picks as recommendations, not test results

PC Gamer’s January 15, 2026 guide selects the MP44 as its “best 4 TB SSD for gaming.” That can make it a useful candidate to investigate, but it does not establish that it is the cheapest, fastest in game loading, or best choice for every motherboard. The cited material does not give comparable MP44 performance, endurance or warranty figures, so verify those details on its exact listing and manufacturer documentation before comparing it on those measures.

A quick buying checklist

  • Confirm your motherboard has a free M.2 slot that supports the drive and its PCIe generation.
  • Check the exact 4TB model number, physical dimensions and heatsink configuration.
  • Compare current price per terabyte for matching listings; no live price winner is established here.
  • Review the manufacturer’s endurance and warranty terms for your region and exact capacity.
  • Do not interpret maximum sequential speeds as proof of faster game loading.
