Yes—players can defeat Necromorphs in Dead Space combat. But defeating one in gameplay is not the same as proving it is permanently dead in the story. Official materials explain how combat and dismemberment work; they do not establish a universal rule that dismemberment permanently kills every Necromorph.
What “killed” means in Dead Space
The question has two answers depending on what you mean. In gameplay, Isaac can fight and defeat Necromorphs. In the fiction, the official sources cited here do not settle whether every defeated or dismembered creature is permanently dead. “Defeated,” “stopped,” and “permanently killed” should not be treated as interchangeable.

How players defeat Necromorphs
Electronic Arts describes Isaac using weapons, engineering tools, and abilities to combat Necromorphs. The remake’s Peeling System presents layered damage by exposing flesh, tendons, and bones during combat. The ESRB likewise describes combat with weapons such as plasma cutters and flamethrowers, sometimes resulting in dismemberment.

These descriptions establish what players do and see: combat damages Necromorphs, and dismemberment is part of the experience. They do not make a claim about permanent death in the story. EA’s 2023 remake announcement describes the combat and Peeling System, while the ESRB rating for Dead Space summarizes the game’s combat content.

Why damage is visible instead of shown on a health bar
The remake’s damage presentation is designed to make an enemy’s condition visible during a fight. EA Motive Gameplay Tech Lead Pierre-Vincent Belisle explained: “What we wanted to do is have Necromorphs show you—without an actual health bar or HP—how much damage they’ve gotten.”
That statement explains a gameplay-design choice: visible damage communicates how much a Necromorph has taken. It is not a lore rule about whether a creature can recover, what happens to every severed part, or when a body is permanently dead. EA Motive’s developer article on the Necromorph design discusses the remake’s damage and dismemberment systems.

What official sources do not confirm
The official materials cited here do not say that dismemberment always equals permanent death, explain the fate of every immobilized or severed Necromorph, or establish that all Necromorph types behave alike. So the careful answer is that Necromorphs can be defeated in combat, while a universal in-universe rule for permanent death is not established by these sources.
For the same reason, a visible combat outcome should not be taken on its own as proof of a broader biological rule. Any stronger claim would need support from a specific game, official guide, or attributable canon source, with its continuity made clear.

Which Dead Space game is this about?
EA’s 2023 remake is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, according to EA’s release announcement. That identifies the edition behind the remake-specific combat and damage details above; it does not answer the lore question for every game or Necromorph type.
