How to Check YouTube RTMP Packet Loss on a Linux VPS in India

Use repeated route tests to the active YouTube ingest hostname, then correlate destination results with encoder counters and YouTube stream health. A single intermediate-hop loss figure does not prove equivalent stream packet loss.

To check whether a Linux VPS is losing packets on the route to YouTube, test the exact ingest hostname and transport configured for your active stream, while the problem is happening. For an RTMPS stream, a repeated TCP route report to port 443 is more relevant than a test to a guessed endpoint. Treat intermediate-hop loss as a clue, not proof: compare the destination results with encoder counters and YouTube’s stream-health notices at the same times.

What to measure—and what a result can establish

Packet loss reported by a route diagnostic describes how its probes were answered. It does not automatically tell you what fraction of your live stream’s TCP traffic was lost. Routers may deprioritize diagnostic responses, and a single measurement may not reflect conditions during a stream.

There is no India-specific packet-loss threshold in the cited guidance that can diagnose a VPS stream. Your VPS being in India does not, by itself, identify the cause. The relevant evidence is the actual path from your host to its configured YouTube ingest destination, measured at the time of the symptom and compared with stream and encoder evidence.

1. Capture the stream evidence and exact destination

  1. Note the failure time and timezone. Save the encoder’s network-related counters and logs, along with the corresponding stream-health notices in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep network delivery evidence separate from encoding, rendering, or input symptoms.
  2. Copy the active ingest hostname. Use the hostname from the configuration for the stream that is having trouble; do not substitute an endpoint found elsewhere or assume a default URL. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance directs streamers to get the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  3. Confirm the transport and port. Check whether your encoder is using RTMP or RTMPS. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says the protocol and server should be rtmps; for SSL errors it suggests specifying port 443, and for timeouts it advises checking the URL and whether the encoder supports RTMPS.
  4. Protect the stream key. Do not include it in shared logs, screenshots, or support requests. Redact it before sharing diagnostic material.

2. Run a TCP route report for RTMPS

On the VPS, run a TCP probe report to the active ingest hostname while the stream symptom is occurring:

mtr -T -P 443 -rw -c 100 <ingest-hostname>

Replace <ingest-hostname> with the hostname copied from the active YouTube configuration. Do not include the stream key. The example uses port 443 for an RTMPS connection; if your configured transport or port differs, test the actual one instead of assuming this command matches it.

The Ubuntu Bionic manual for mtr 0.92-1 documents TCP probes (-T), target-port selection (-P), report mode (-r), wide report (-w), and report-cycle count (-c). Option support can differ between installed versions, so check the VPS’s own mtr help or manual if an option is rejected. The Ubuntu manual describes mtr as combining traceroute and ping behavior, reporting response percentages and round-trip times along the route.

3. Interpret the route without overcalling loss

  • Loss appears at one intermediate hop, but later hops and the destination respond without comparable loss: this may reflect that router’s treatment of diagnostic probes rather than loss affecting the stream. The Ubuntu mtr manual warns that some modern routers give ICMP echo packets lower priority, making reported reliability for those routers look worse than actual reliability.
  • Loss persists at the destination across repeated reports: this is stronger evidence of a route problem than an isolated intermediate-hop result. It still does not prove that the live TCP stream experienced the same loss percentage.
  • Results change during the symptom and return to normal outside it: timestamp correlation makes a path-related explanation more plausible, particularly when stream and encoder evidence changes at the same time.
  • Route reports stay stable while the stream fails: investigate other causes too, such as encoder configuration, available capacity, CPU load, or the input. Do not switch VPS providers based only on geography.

For RTMPS, a TCP probe aimed at the active service port is more relevant to the configured connection than an ICMP-only route check, but it remains a diagnostic probe—not a direct measurement of the stream’s packet-loss rate.

4. Separate packet loss from insufficient upload capacity

A route can respond without notable loss while the connection still lacks sustained outbound capacity for the configured bitrate. YouTube advises choosing a quality reliable for the available connection, running a speed test, testing beforehand with representative movement and audio, and monitoring stream health. A short speed-test peak alone does not establish that a VPS can sustain the stream’s outbound rate.

YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance ties recommendations to codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, it lists H.264 1080p30 at a recommended 10 Mbps and H.264 1080p60 at a recommended 12 Mbps. Those figures apply to those specific combinations; they are not general packet-loss limits or recommendations for every stream.

  1. Identify the stream’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and configured bitrate.
  2. Compare the bitrate with the matching row in YouTube’s current encoder guidance, rather than applying an example for a different combination.
  3. Assess sustained outbound capacity during the stream and compare its timing with encoder network counters and YouTube stream-health notices.

Common diagnostic mistakes

  • Testing a guessed YouTube hostname: the result may describe a route your stream does not use. Copy the active hostname from Live Control Room.
  • Using the wrong port or transport: a report to a different service or port cannot reliably characterize the configured stream path. Confirm RTMP versus RTMPS and test the port in use.
  • Treating one intermediate hop’s percentage as stream loss: router probe handling can produce misleading hop-level results. Look at the destination, repeated reports, and matching stream evidence.
  • Using only a speed-test peak: a brief peak does not show sustained capacity through the streaming window. Compare actual configured bitrate and performance over time.
  • Sharing an unredacted log: stream keys are sensitive. Remove them before sending logs or screenshots to anyone.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a separate cloud-streaming option, not a packet-loss diagnostic tool. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
