If YouTube says it is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, check the exact Live Control Room warning, your stream settings, upload capacity, and whether FFmpeg is keeping up with real time. Adding FFmpeg’s -re flag may help when sending a prerecorded file, but it is not a universal fix for a live source, weak connection, or overloaded encoder.
What YouTube’s warning means
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes this health state as “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” It signals a delivery-continuity problem; on its own, it does not identify the cause. Possible causes include insufficient upload capacity, a bitrate or resolution that does not suit the connection, or an encoder that cannot sustain real-time output. Start with the detailed message in Live Control Room rather than assuming a particular FFmpeg flag is at fault. YouTube Live Streaming API health-status messages

Diagnose the stream before changing FFmpeg flags
- Read the exact warning. In YouTube Live Control Room, note the health indicator’s message and any additional errors. YouTube shows a timestamp beside each error, and unresolved errors continue to appear. The category may point to bitrate, codec, audio or video settings, resolution, or keyframe frequency. YouTube’s live streaming error messages
- Check whether FFmpeg is keeping pace. For a live encode, see whether the process sustains real-time output. Valid command syntax does not guarantee continuous delivery. Do not conclude that hardware is the bottleneck unless the machine or FFmpeg’s reported encoding speed supports that diagnosis.
- Verify the stream configuration. Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with the YouTube ingestion settings you selected and YouTube’s current recommendations. If available bandwidth cannot support the chosen resolution, YouTube advises lowering it. YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations
- Test upload capacity. Run a speed test, then compare the available upload capacity with the planned stream bitrate. Leave room for network variability rather than treating a speed-test result as a guaranteed sustained rate. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for the connection. YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations
- Change one relevant setting and retest. Test with representative audio and video movement before the event, then monitor stream health during it. Changing several settings at once makes it harder to identify which one helped or introduced a new problem. YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations
When to use FFmpeg’s -re flag
FFmpeg documents -re as a real-time input read-rate control, equivalent to reading at 1× speed. It can be useful when the input is a prerecorded file: without pacing, FFmpeg may read the file faster than real time while producing live output. The flag controls how quickly FFmpeg reads input; it does not increase network capacity or make an encoder render faster.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not add -re as a blanket fix. FFmpeg cautions against using a low read rate with an actual capture device or live stream. First identify whether your input is a file or a live source. If it is a live source, investigate its delivery, the connection, and encoding performance instead. FFmpeg command-line documentation

Check bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, and keyframes
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of four seconds. Audio options include AAC or MP3; AAC is required for 5.1 surround audio over RTMP/RTMPS. Match the settings to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send. YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations
| Codec and format | YouTube-published recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations, not guaranteed upload-speed requirements or universal quality targets. YouTube separately recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; it says to keep keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Its error guidance also treats incorrect bitrate, unsupported codecs, resolution problems, and wrong keyframe frequency as distinct issues. Check the specific error instead of assuming every insufficient-data warning is a GOP or pacing problem. YouTube’s live streaming error messages

Common causes and what to try
- Upload capacity is too low or variable: test the connection and reduce stream quality or resolution until the connection can carry it reliably.
- Configured bitrate does not match the selected format: check the codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific YouTube recommendations, then change the bitrate and retest.
- Keyframe interval or another ingestion setting is incorrect: check the detailed YouTube error; use the recommended two-second interval and keep it at or below four seconds.
- FFmpeg cannot sustain real-time encoding: inspect its reported encoding speed and the output behavior. Do not infer a hardware problem without evidence from the machine or process.
- A prerecorded file is being read too quickly for live output: consider
-refor that file input, but not for an actual capture device or live stream.
Retest after each targeted change. YouTube recommends testing before the stream and monitoring health during the event. YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations
