FFprobe can confirm that your local media source opens and contains the expected audio and video streams, but it cannot verify that YouTube will accept your stream. To check the complete path, publish a short test to the intended YouTube event using its current server URL and stream key, then confirm the preview and stream health in Live Control Room.
What FFprobe can—and cannot—check
FFprobe inspects media: it can report whether a file or supported capture input opens and show the streams and properties it finds. It does not test YouTube ingest, validate a stream key, or establish that viewers can play the event. A successful probe is evidence about the input, not the connection.

YouTube receipt must be checked separately by publishing to the event and viewing its preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room. A TCP connection or RTMP handshake alone is also insufficient evidence of a healthy video and audio feed.

1. Get the correct YouTube URL and protect the key
- Open the scheduled or test stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Copy that event’s server URL and stream key into your encoder. Use the current values shown for the event and the protocol you intend to use; do not rely on a fixed endpoint copied from an article.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put it in public logs, support tickets, screen recordings, or shell transcripts. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains where to find the server URL and key. Keep the real key out of command examples and shared diagnostics.

2. Inspect the actual input with FFprobe
For a local file, run:
ffprobe -hide_banner -v error -show_format -show_streams input.mp4Replace input.mp4 with the actual path. Check that the expected video and audio streams appear. Note relevant properties such as codec, dimensions, frame rate, sample rate, and channel layout. FFprobe’s documented purpose is to show media information; see the FFprobe documentation.
- If FFprobe cannot open the input, or an expected stream is missing, resolve that local source or configuration problem first.
- If you are using a live capture device, use the device syntax supported by your installed FFmpeg build. The file command above is not a portable capture-device command.
Passing this check does not establish that DNS, the firewall or proxy, TLS, YouTube’s server, the key, or the live event is working.
3. Publish a short test stream
Use a private or unlisted test event as appropriate for your channel. Make the test representative of the setup you plan to use: include moving video and audio if those are part of the real stream. YouTube recommends testing in advance and checking the Live Control Room preview before starting the event; see its streaming tips.

Example FFmpeg publishing pattern
This generic command illustrates publishing a file as an RTMP/FLV stream:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmp://HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'Replace the URL with the exact server URL and key from the event. This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested command for every FFmpeg build, operating system, input, or current YouTube endpoint. Confirm that your build supports the required protocol and codecs. Do not paste a real key into shell history or diagnostic output.
FFmpeg documents RTMP URL structure and the FLV publishing pattern; its documentation identifies 1935 as the default RTMP port, but YouTube’s event-specific configuration is authoritative. See FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Using a generated test pattern
FFmpeg’s lavfi input can generate synthetic video, depending on the filters and features in the installed build. This can test encoding and ingest without a media file, but it does not test your camera, microphone, capture card, or production scene. Choose the input that exercises the part of the setup you are trying to diagnose.
4. Confirm that YouTube receives a usable feed
- Wait for the event preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- Check the stream-health status and any messages. Confirm both motion and audio where expected; a connection attempt by itself is not a pass.
- For an end-to-end check, inspect the event and its watch page as well. A preview does not rule out separate playback, audio, or quality problems.
Choose the test that matches the suspected failure

Troubleshoot common results
FFprobe fails or expected streams are missing
Check the file path, file validity, permissions, capture device, and local FFmpeg input configuration. This result points to an input-side problem; it does not show that YouTube is unreachable.
FFprobe succeeds, but the publisher cannot connect
Check the event-specific URL, protocol, key, outbound network, firewall or proxy policy, and whether the FFmpeg build supports the required protocol. YouTube’s streaming tips advise checking outbound internet capacity; its troubleshooting guidance includes refreshing a stream key when an encoder cannot start.

RTMPS SSL error
Use the RTMPS endpoint supplied in Live Control Room and verify that both the protocol and server are configured for RTMPS. YouTube advises trying port 443 when troubleshooting an SSL error, and the client must support RTMPS. RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Connection timeout
Recheck the current URL and protocol, and verify the client’s RTMPS support if you selected an RTMPS endpoint. A timeout alone does not identify whether the cause is the endpoint, client, or network path.
Preview appears, but quality is unstable
Check the source and encoder output, monitor stream health, and compare your outbound upload capacity with the total bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup encoders where applicable; it also advises checking upload rather than download speed. The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a measured guarantee. See YouTube streaming tips.

The key is rejected or invalid
Make sure you copied the key for the correct event. Reset it in Live Control Room if needed, then update the encoder. Keep the replacement key private.
RTMP versus RTMPS
RTMP operates over TCP/IP; RTMPS adds a secure SSL/TLS connection. YouTube provides the applicable endpoint in Live Control Room. Changing only the URL scheme may not be enough: the client must support the selected protocol and the endpoint must match it. Consult FFmpeg’s protocol documentation and YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
