A switch from 1080p to 720p does not, by itself, explain a YouTube stream-health warning. Open YouTube Live Control Room, read the exact Stream status message and follow its instruction. Then verify what your encoder is actually sending—resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate—along with keyframe interval, bitrate mode and upload capacity.
Start with the exact Stream status message
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the event and inspect Stream status. YouTube says this area displays specific error messages and instructions. The warning text matters: without it, the encoder model, codec, frame rate, bitrate and network conditions, there is no basis for identifying one particular cause.

Keep a copy of the full message when seeking help. Treat the resolution change as a reason to recheck the setup, not proof that the new resolution caused the warning.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchVerify the signal the encoder is sending
Check the encoder’s active output settings and status, not just the resolution shown on the YouTube event page. YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. Manual resolution selection is available when using a custom stream key; if you chose a manual resolution, confirm the encoder output matches it.

- Resolution: 720p video is 1280×720. Confirm the outgoing dimensions are 1280×720 rather than assuming that changing one menu updated the active output.
- Frame rate: Check the encoder’s actual output frame rate and compare it with the event setup.
- Codec: Identify whether the encoder sends H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1. The relevant live bitrate recommendation depends on codec and frame rate.
- Bitrate: Read the current outgoing video bitrate. Compare it to the live-ingestion guidance below for the actual resolution, frame rate and codec.
YouTube’s live settings guidance recommends automatic resolution detection by default. If you deliberately selected a manual resolution, ensure it agrees with the encoder’s output.
Compare live bitrate with YouTube’s guidance
The figures below are YouTube Help’s live-ingestion recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS encoder ingest. The retrieved guidance does not display a publication date. The 720p recommendations apply to both 30 and 60 fps in this table, but always check the actual codec being sent.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
Use the 720p row once the encoder is correctly sending 720p. The 1080p figures are useful for checking the prior setup, not targets to retain after the output has changed to 720p. These are recommendations, not measured outcomes or a diagnosis of your stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not substitute YouTube’s video-upload recommendations for live encoder targets. The separate upload table lists 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates and 7.5 Mbps at high frame rates; those figures concern uploading a video file, not live ingestion.

Check bitrate mode, keyframes and frame-rate limits
- Bitrate mode: Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR), as in YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance.
- Keyframe interval: Set a two-second interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: Keep output at or below 60 fps.
- Codec: Confirm the outgoing codec is one of the listed supported options: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1.
These are general encoder checks. Audio settings and other advanced options are best investigated when the displayed warning or your particular setup points to them.
Test upload bandwidth and leave headroom
Test upload speed under realistic conditions; download speed is often higher and does not show whether your connection can sustain the outgoing stream. Compare the result with the stream bitrate, any backup stream and other traffic using the connection at the same time.

YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. A shared office connection or other concurrent network use can reduce the capacity available to the encoder, so do not treat a speed-test result as dedicated capacity unless it actually is.
Troubleshoot based on what you find
| What you find | What to verify or change |
|---|---|
| The outgoing dimensions are still 1080p | Change the encoder’s active output to 1280×720 and check that the selected stream key or manual resolution setting agrees. Confirm the actual output after applying the change. |
| YouTube’s manual resolution and encoder output differ | Make the manual selection and encoder output match, or use YouTube’s recommended automatic detection setting. |
| The bitrate is below the relevant 720p minimum | Check codec and frame rate first, then compare the outgoing bitrate with the matching live-ingestion row. Account for network headroom before increasing it. |
| CBR is not enabled, or the keyframe interval is longer than four seconds | Use CBR and set keyframes to two seconds, without exceeding four seconds. |
| Upload speed is close to the stream bitrate or fluctuates under load | Retest while the connection is in realistic use, account for simultaneous traffic, and ensure the available upload capacity leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| All checked settings appear to match, but the warning remains | Use the exact Stream status message as the next clue. Record the encoder’s output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, plus the upload test conditions, and follow the message’s specific instruction rather than guessing at a cause. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded video, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. It plays the uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera, and supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery.
