What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To find out whether your PC has Windows 11 Home, Pro, or another edition, open Settings > System > About and read Edition under Windows specifications. That is the clearest check for the installed edition. Other built-in tools can help when you need the version, build, or broader system details.
1. Check Edition in Settings
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Scroll to Windows specifications and read the value beside Edition.
The Edition field answers whether Windows is Home, Pro, or another edition. The version and OS build listed nearby are different details; they do not replace the edition name. Microsoft documents this route in its guide to finding information about your Windows device.

2. Find About through Settings search
If you do not want to navigate through the Settings categories, open Start or taskbar search and type About your PC. Open the matching Settings result, then look under Windows specifications > Edition. This is a quicker route to the same About page, not a separate source of edition information.
3. Use winver for version and build
- Search for
winverfrom Start or the taskbar. - Open the winver result.
- Read the Windows version and build shown in the dialog.
This is useful when technical support asks which Windows release or build is installed. Microsoft documents winver for checking Windows version and build in its Windows Update Assistant guidance. For the specific Home-versus-Pro question, use the Edition field in Settings About.

4. Open System Information (msinfo32) for a broader view
- Search for
msinfo32from Start or the taskbar. - Open System Information.
- Review the system summary and relevant software or hardware details.
System Information is a built-in diagnostic tool, rather than the simplest way to identify an edition. Microsoft describes its scope and notes that some driver status details may be limited without administrator privileges; hardware information is unavailable in Safe Mode. See Microsoft’s System Information tool description.
5. Use About to check system type, not edition
The About page also contains Device specifications, including system type. That information answers a different question from the Windows edition. For example, a system type describing a 64-bit operating system does not tell you whether Windows is Home or Pro; check Windows specifications > Edition for that.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Microsoft’s 32-bit and 64-bit Windows FAQ states that Windows 11 is available only as a 64-bit operating system. System type can still be relevant when checking device specifications or software compatibility.

6. Confirm the edition before reinstalling Windows
If you are preparing to reinstall Windows, use Settings > System > About > Windows specifications to note the installed Edition. Microsoft says the edition selected for reinstallation must match the digital license. Its reinstallation guidance explains the match requirement and where to find the installed edition.
