Direct answer: Export every account, open each fund’s current holdings file, and calculate the market value of each underlying issuer—not just the number of tickers you own. Add direct shares to the look-through value of every mutual fund and ETF, then group the result by issuer, technology layer, sector, geography and market-cap style. Compare those percentages with your written allocation, time horizon and risk tolerance before deciding whether any change is needed.

Why counting tickers does not reveal your technology exposure

Owning several funds can create the appearance of diversification while repeating the same companies. A broad-market fund, a semiconductor fund and a cloud-computing fund may all own the same chip designer, cloud provider or data-center supplier. The relevant question is not “How many funds do I hold?” but “How much of my portfolio depends on the same issuers and spending cycle?”

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

AI exposure is an economic-exposure question, not merely a search for companies with “AI” in their names. Include a company when its disclosed business, customers or supplier relationships make its results materially dependent on AI infrastructure or adoption. Write down the rule you use so that the result is consistent and repeatable. A narrow fund may not provide meaningful diversification; Investor.gov warns that “a mutual fund or ETF won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).”

Map the business layers behind an AI theme

Layer What to look for Typical concentration question
Semiconductors Chip designers, manufacturers, equipment and memory suppliers Do several funds depend on the same chip cycle?
Cloud and data centers Cloud platforms, servers, networking, storage, power and cooling Are infrastructure purchases tied to a few large customers?
Software and platforms Enterprise software, developer tools, search, advertising and operating systems Are multiple funds repeating the same platform companies?
Applications and services Businesses using AI in products, workflows or customer operations Is the exposure diversified by end market or concentrated in one theme?

This classification does not tell you whether a stock is attractive. It tells you which economic drivers can affect several positions at once.

Gather a complete, dated portfolio snapshot

Use one valuation date and include every account that contributes to your investment plan. A partial snapshot can understate concentration, particularly when retirement and taxable accounts are held at different firms.

  1. Export positions from each brokerage and retirement account. Include taxable accounts, IRAs, workplace plans and any other account whose allocation matters to your decision.
  2. Record the essential fields. For each position capture ticker, issuer name, shares, current market value, account type and, when tax decisions may follow, cost basis.
  3. Keep cash and equivalents visible. They form part of the denominator when you calculate portfolio percentages, even though they do not have AI or technology exposure.
  4. Save the valuation date. Prices and fund weights change. A file without a date cannot be reconciled later.

Use issuer names, not only ticker symbols

Ticker symbols can change, differ by exchange or represent multiple share classes. Add a normalized issuer field so that all share classes of the same company aggregate together. Keep the original ticker as an audit field; do not overwrite it.

Decide what belongs in the denominator

For a whole-portfolio view, divide each exposure by the market value of all included positions. If you are reviewing only an equity sleeve, state that scope and use the sleeve’s value as the denominator. Do not mix a fund’s net asset value with the market value of your account position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Classify direct stock and bond holdings

Start with securities you own directly. Assign each issuer a primary sector and, where useful, one or more technology-layer tags. Then apply your written AI rule. For example, you might include companies that sell AI compute, provide the cloud or data-center infrastructure used to run it, or disclose meaningful dependence on AI adoption. You may mark a second, broader category for companies with an indirect or uncertain connection.

Separate measured exposure from an estimate

  • Measured: the issuer is explicitly identified in a fund’s holdings file or in your account statement.
  • Rule-based: you include the issuer because its disclosed business or supplier relationship meets your documented AI criterion.
  • Uncertain: the relationship is plausible but not established by the information you reviewed. Keep this category separate instead of presenting it as a precise percentage.

This distinction prevents a thematic label from becoming a false claim about revenue. It also lets you rerun the analysis if your definition changes.

Look through every mutual fund and ETF

A fund position is not a single economic exposure. Download the latest holdings file and the summary prospectus and full prospectus from the fund sponsor or EDGAR. The SEC says most ETFs post portfolio holdings on their websites daily and advises investors to review holdings, objectives, NAV, spreads, fees and risks. Record the holdings date beside each file; weights can change between downloads.

  1. Identify each fund position. Record the number of shares and your current market value, not the fund’s total assets.
  2. Download the holdings file. Prefer the sponsor’s file with issuer names, tickers and portfolio weights. If the fund publishes several files, use the one whose date is closest to your valuation date.
  3. Read the prospectus. Confirm the objective, index or strategy, geographic scope, derivatives or leverage, fees and principal risks.
  4. Normalize issuers. Map each underlying line to the same issuer key used for direct holdings. Keep cash, derivatives and “other assets” as separate categories when the file lists them.
  5. Calculate look-through value. Multiply your fund position value by each underlying weight.
  6. Aggregate across funds and direct positions. Sum the same issuer and the same technology layer before calculating percentages.

The basic calculation is look-through value = your fund position value × holding weight. If you own $20,000 of a fund and its file shows an 8% weight in an issuer, your look-through value is $1,600 before adding any direct shares or exposure through another fund.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Illustrative look-through calculation

The following figures are an example of the method, not a current holdings claim.

Source Your position value Underlying weight Look-through value
Direct holding in Issuer A $3,000 100% $3,000
Fund A $20,000 8% in Issuer A $1,600
Fund A $20,000 6% in Issuer B $1,200
Fund B $10,000 5% in Issuer A $500

In this example, Issuer A totals $5,100 after adding the direct position and both funds. If the complete portfolio is $100,000, Issuer A represents 5.1%. The arithmetic must be repeated for every underlying issuer, not just the names that appear in a fund’s title.

Measure overlap and shared economic drivers

After calculating look-through values, create one row per normalized issuer. Add direct holdings and every fund contribution. Then create a second aggregation by business layer and a third by sector or geography.

Use a top-issuer table

Field Calculation Why it matters
Total issuer value Direct value + all fund look-through values Shows your actual economic stake in one company.
Issuer weight Total issuer value ÷ portfolio value Allows comparison with your intended allocation.
Number of sources Direct holdings plus funds containing the issuer Reveals how many wrappers repeat the same company.
Largest source Source with the greatest contribution Shows where a change would have the biggest effect.

Count dependencies as well as legal issuers. Several companies can rise and fall with the same data-center construction, semiconductor-capacity or cloud-spending cycle. A portfolio can therefore be concentrated even when no single stock looks dominant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Group exposure by layer

Sum issuer values for chips, cloud, data centers, software and applications. If an issuer spans layers, choose a primary classification and record a note rather than counting the same value twice. A separate “shared or mixed” bucket is better than inflating the total.

Calculate the concentration metrics that answer the real question

Percentages make accounts of different sizes comparable. Calculate them from the same dated snapshot.

Metric Formula Interpretation
Total AI-related weight Sum of issuers meeting your documented AI rule ÷ portfolio value Broad thematic exposure under your stated definition.
Total high-growth technology weight Technology-layer value ÷ portfolio value Includes technology exposure that may not meet the AI rule.
Largest issuer weight Largest aggregated issuer value ÷ portfolio value Single-company concentration after look-through.
Top-five issuer weight Sum of five largest issuer weights Shows whether concentration is distributed among a small group.
Layer weight Layer value ÷ portfolio value Identifies dependence on chips, cloud, data centers or other layers.
Fund overlap Shared issuer value across funds ÷ portfolio value Shows duplication hidden by separate tickers.

There is no authoritative “safe” AI or high-growth-technology percentage. The SEC sources do not prescribe a universal limit. Treat these figures as measurements to compare with your own policy, not as automatic buy or sell signals.

Compare the result with your intended allocation

Investor.gov emphasizes that asset allocation is personal and can change as goals and time horizons change. Write down the allocation you intended before looking for a conclusion. Include broad categories such as stocks, bonds and cash, then specify any technology or thematic limit you have chosen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Compare actual and intended weights. Use the same denominator and valuation date for both.
  2. Separate market movement from new contributions. A technology sleeve can grow above its target without any purchase if its holdings rise faster than the rest of the portfolio.
  3. Check the time horizon. A near-term spending goal may justify a different risk level from a long-term retirement goal.
  4. Check risk tolerance and capacity. Consider how a sharp decline in growth stocks would affect your ability and willingness to stay invested.
  5. Document a permitted range. A written band is more actionable than an improvised decision after a volatile week.

Investor.gov gives an illustrative example in which a portfolio moves from 60% stocks to 80% after market gains. That example explains allocation drift; it is not a recommended threshold for stocks, AI or technology.

Compare funds and portfolios on more than a theme label

When deciding whether two funds are genuinely different, compare the following fields from their latest holdings and prospectuses.

Comparison field What to record Decision question
Total look-through AI or technology weight Aggregated percentage under the same rule Does the fund add exposure you actually want?
Largest single-issuer weight Top issuer after look-through Is the concentration acceptable relative to your policy?
Overlap Issuers shared with your existing funds Does the new ticker diversify or duplicate?
Business layer Chips, cloud, data centers, software or applications Which spending cycle drives returns?
Volatility and leverage Use of leverage, inverse strategies or derivatives stated in the prospectus Can losses or daily compounding create a risk you did not intend?
Fees and spreads Expense information and trading spread reviewed in the fund materials What ongoing and transaction costs reduce returns?
Tax consequences Account location, realized gains and distribution considerations Can you change the position without an avoidable tax cost?
Objective and risks Index, strategy, geographic scope and principal risks Does the mandate match your goal and horizon?

Do not infer diversification from a fund name. Investor.gov specifically advises checking the top holdings of several mutual funds or ETFs to make sure they are different and provide the diversification you seek.

Handle leveraged and single-stock ETFs separately

Leveraged, inverse and single-stock ETFs can dominate a risk analysis even when the dollar position is small. The SEC states that, unlike traditional ETFs and other leveraged or inverse ETFs, leveraged or inverse single-stock ETFs track one stock rather than an index, eliminating the benefits of diversification. Mark these products with a separate risk flag and include their full economic exposure in your issuer totals.

Read the prospectus for the objective, daily reset mechanics, leverage, inverse exposure, fees and risks. Do not combine a single-stock product with an ordinary diversified fund merely because both trade as ETFs.

Choose a review and rebalancing rule

A process is more reliable than a reaction to headlines. Investor.gov describes both calendar reviews and percentage-band approaches and notes that drift can change portfolio risk.

Calendar review

Set a recurring review, such as semiannually. On each date, export new positions, download current holdings files, rerun the issuer and layer totals, and archive the inputs. A fixed schedule limits constant tinkering but can allow larger drift between reviews.

Percentage-band trigger

Define a permitted range around each target. Review when an allocation leaves its band, regardless of the calendar. This responds to drift sooner but requires reliable, current prices and a written rule that prevents discretionary exceptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rebalance with implementation costs in view

  • Check account location before selling. A taxable sale may create a capital-gains consequence that a retirement-account trade would not.
  • Review transaction costs and bid-ask spreads, especially for narrow or leveraged products.
  • Consider directing new contributions toward underweight categories before selling appreciated positions.
  • Follow your written policy rather than changing the target because a theme is temporarily popular or unpopular.
  • Do not assume the SEC guidance sets a required AI or technology allocation; it does not.

Build the analysis in a spreadsheet

A spreadsheet is sufficient if its inputs, dates and formulas are transparent. Use one tab for account positions, one for fund holdings and one for issuer classification.

Suggested account-position columns

  • Valuation date
  • Account name and account type
  • Ticker and security name
  • Normalized issuer key
  • Shares and market value
  • Cost basis, when relevant to a tax decision
  • Direct or fund position

Suggested fund-holdings columns

  • Fund ticker and fund name
  • Holdings-file date
  • Underlying ticker and issuer
  • Normalized issuer key
  • Portfolio weight
  • Technology layer and sector
  • Leverage, inverse or derivative flag
  • Source-file name or location

Add a calculated field for fund position value × underlying weight. Use a pivot table or grouped sum by normalized issuer, sector and layer. Add checks that fund weights total approximately 100% when the file is designed to do so, and investigate cash, derivatives or “other” lines instead of silently dropping them.

Troubleshoot common errors

Using stale holdings

Symptom: Your calculated weight does not reconcile with the fund’s current presentation. Fix: verify the holdings date and download the latest available file. Keep the prior file so you can explain changes.

Counting each fund as a separate exposure

Symptom: A portfolio appears diversified because it contains many tickers. Fix: aggregate every underlying issuer across direct positions and funds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixing portfolio and fund percentages

Symptom: You treat an 8% fund holding as 8% of your entire portfolio. Fix: multiply by your position value in that fund first.

Double-counting a mixed business

Symptom: Layer totals exceed the portfolio value. Fix: assign a primary layer or use a mixed category; never count one dollar twice.

Ignoring premiums, discounts, fees and spreads

Symptom: The theoretical allocation looks right, but implementation results differ. Fix: review NAV, trading price, fees and spreads in the fund materials, as the SEC ETF bulletin recommends.

Equating an AI label with AI revenue

Symptom: A marketing description determines your classification. Fix: apply your documented economic-exposure rule and label uncertain relationships as estimates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn the numbers into a decision

Use the completed worksheet to answer four questions in order:

  1. What do I actually own? State total AI-related, technology and top-issuer percentages after look-through.
  2. What drives those positions? Identify repeated issuers and shared layers such as chips, cloud or data centers.
  3. What did I intend to own? Compare the measurements with your written asset allocation, time horizon and risk tolerance.
  4. What action is permitted by my policy? If the portfolio is within range, document that result. If it is outside range, consider contributions, trades, taxes, spreads and account location before acting.

The value of this process is not a single “correct” AI percentage. It is an auditable view of overlapping economic exposure, updated when holdings and goals change.
