Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how often the screen refreshes; FPS is how many frames the game renders. They are related, but you do not always need to set them to the same number.
How do I check my monitor’s refresh rate?
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- If you use more than one screen, select the monitor you want to check in the display selector.
- Read the current resolution and refresh rate in the information panel. Windows also indicates whether the selected display supports variable refresh rate (VRR).
- To change the rate, choose a value beside Choose a refresh rate. Check the resolution shown with the option: an asterisk means that rate is not supported at the current resolution, and selecting it changes the resolution.
Windows only lists modes supported by the display and current configuration. The steps and asterisk warning are documented in Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions.

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate
Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is a separate automatic feature, not a setting available on every PC. Microsoft says it requires supported hardware and a VRR-capable display with a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz. DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games; if a game appears to run at a lower refresh rate, Microsoft suggests turning DRR off. Windows 10 does not support DRR. See Microsoft’s guidance for the feature’s availability and settings.
macOS on supported displays
On supported MacBook Pro models and Apple displays, open Apple menu > System Settings (or System Preferences) > Displays, then select a value from Refresh Rate. Available choices depend on the Mac and display; Apple lists examples including 120 Hz, 60 Hz, 59.94 Hz, 50 Hz, 48 Hz and 47.95 Hz, but a given device will not necessarily offer all of them. Details are in Apple’s refresh-rate instructions.

External Adaptive Sync displays on Mac
Apple documents Adaptive Sync support for compatible external displays on macOS Monterey or later with Apple silicon Macs and specific Intel Mac models. On macOS Ventura or later, select the external display in Displays and choose Variable or Adaptive from the Refresh Rate menu. The display determines its supported range. For this documented Adaptive Sync connection, Apple recommends a Thunderbolt, USB-C or other DisplayPort-enabled cable for best performance and says not to use HDMI. This is Apple’s compatibility guidance for the supported setup, not a universal rule for every monitor connection. See Apple’s Adaptive Sync requirements.
How do I check my game’s FPS?
Use the game’s own FPS counter if it has one, or a trusted platform or graphics-driver overlay. Look for the current FPS reading while the game is running; an average or maximum reading describes performance over a different interval and is not necessarily the rate at that moment. Counter names and locations vary by game, platform and driver, so consult the current instructions for the specific game or overlay rather than assuming one menu path applies everywhere.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Check FPS independently of the operating system’s refresh-rate panel. The display setting tells you the screen’s active mode; the game counter tells you how quickly the game is rendering. Neither reading by itself guarantees that every rendered frame is being shown.

First confirm the monitor’s active Hz at the resolution you intend to play at, then observe the game’s FPS during play. Choose synchronization based on the display, graphics hardware, connection and the trade-off you prefer; an exact numerical match is not a universal requirement.

| Setting | What it does | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| V-Sync on | Synchronizes the game’s frame rate with monitor refresh and limits the frames that can be displayed. | Can avoid tearing, but synchronization can affect the frame rate shown by the game. |
| V-Sync off | Allows the game to render beyond the monitor’s refresh rate. | May cause visible tearing. The display cannot show every frame rendered above its fixed refresh rate in one refresh interval. |
| VRR / Adaptive Sync | On compatible hardware, dynamically varies display refresh to follow the game’s frame rate within the display’s supported range. | Can make a strict fixed Hz-to-FPS match unnecessary. Compatibility depends on the display, computer or GPU, connection, operating system and settings; unsupported configurations can have limitations, including flicker. |
NVIDIA’s FrameView 1.1 guide describes V-Sync as forcing the game frame rate to synchronize with the monitor refresh rate; it also notes that disabling V-Sync can permit rates beyond refresh but may cause tearing. Apple explains that Adaptive Sync adjusts refresh to match GPU-rendered content within supported configurations in its Mac Adaptive Sync documentation.
With a fixed-refresh display, if the game renders below the refresh rate, the screen does not necessarily receive a newly rendered game frame on every refresh. If the game renders above it, the display still cannot show every rendered frame in a single refresh interval. Higher FPS can still indicate the system’s rendering performance; it simply does not mean every frame is visible at once.

When is a monitor upgrade relevant?
If the active mode list does not include the refresh rate you want at your preferred resolution, check the monitor’s specifications and the current configuration before concluding that the hardware is the limit. A higher-refresh-rate display is an optional upgrade, not a prerequisite for checking settings or understanding FPS. Gaming benefits depend on both display capability and the content, as Microsoft notes.
