For a quick check, look at the Wi-Fi indicator in your device’s network settings: Windows and Android show relative signal strength, while a Mac offers Apple’s built-in Wireless Diagnostics. On iPhone, the Wi-Fi icon shows that you’re connected over Wi-Fi; Apple’s standard user guide does not document a numeric Wi-Fi-strength reading there. Bars and icons help compare locations, but they do not measure internet speed.
Check Wi-Fi signal on Windows
Use the taskbar for a quick comparison
- Select the network or Wi-Fi area on the taskbar and inspect the connected network’s signal indicator. The exact appearance and path can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft notes that a moving indicator can mean the device is still connecting: Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi connection guide.
The bars are a user-interface indication, not a universal numeric scale. Microsoft defines SignalBars as the number of signal bars displayed by Windows: Microsoft’s WLAN connection profile documentation.

Use Command Prompt for more detail
- Open Command Prompt.
- Run
netsh wlan show interfacesto inspect the connected wireless interface. - To see details for nearby visible networks, run
netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid. The BSSID output includes signal strength, channel, and radio type.
Microsoft documents these commands in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance. The nearby-network output can help compare access points, but it does not establish how fast or reliable your internet connection is.
Check Wi-Fi signal on a Mac
- Hold Option and click the Wi-Fi status menu in the menu bar.
- Choose Open Wireless Diagnostics and follow the prompts to analyze the connection.
Apple says Wireless Diagnostics can list detected issues and possible solutions, provide Wi-Fi best-practice information, and create a compressed diagnostic file in /var/tmp for a network administrator or support person. See Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics instructions. Menu contents can vary by macOS version; these instructions do not depend on a particular RSSI label or scan-window layout.

Check Wi-Fi signal on iPhone
Look at the Wi-Fi symbol in the status area. Apple describes it as indicating that iPhone is connected to the internet over Wi-Fi, not as a numeric signal-strength meter. The cellular bars shown separately indicate cellular service strength, not Wi-Fi strength. Apple’s iPhone status icons guide does not document a numeric Wi-Fi RSSI reading in the standard status interface.
To assess coverage in practice, check whether the connection remains usable where the problem occurs, then compare it with the same iPhone closer to the router. The icon alone is not a calibrated way to compare signal levels. The cited Apple guide also does not establish that a particular third-party app can read the connected network’s RSSI.

Check Wi-Fi signal on Android
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet.
- Compare the Wi-Fi symbols shown for available networks. Google says, “A fuller icon means a stronger signal.”
See Google’s Android Wi-Fi instructions. Labels and screens vary by manufacturer, Android version, and device. If the path differs, open Settings and search for Internet or Wi-Fi.

What signal bars and readings can tell you
Compare places using the same device
Bars and icons are most useful for a relative comparison—for example, checking the same phone or laptop beside the router and then in a room where coverage is poor. The cited platform documentation does not define a shared scale, so three bars on one operating system cannot be assumed to equal three bars on another.

Signal is only one part of connection quality
RSSI is a received-signal measurement used in more technical Wi-Fi diagnostics and roaming decisions. Apple’s deployment guidance describes its devices considering RSSI alongside other network information when evaluating access points: Apple Platform Deployment: Wi-Fi. That is one reason signal alone does not determine connection behavior.
A strong signal does not guarantee fast or reliable internet. Microsoft notes that problems can persist even with a strong signal and clear channel, and advises checking other access-point settings. Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics can assess the connection more broadly than an icon. No single “good RSSI” cutoff applies to every task, radio band, device antenna, environment, and network design in the documentation cited here.

What to do if Wi-Fi seems weak
- Compare locations. Check near the router and at the problem spot, using the same device if possible.
- Reduce distance and obstacles. Move the device closer, or place the access point centrally and higher where practical. Check for obstructions and interference, including metal objects. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance also notes that “The closer to 10 dBm, the stronger the signal.” That wording concerns analyzer-reported strength; it is not a universal cutoff or a performance guarantee.
- Consider an extender only after confirming a coverage problem. Microsoft suggests a network extender when repositioning the device or access point is not practical. An extender is not a general fix for an ISP outage, a slow internet plan, network congestion, or a problem limited to one app or website.
- Look beyond signal if performance remains poor. Check channel and channel-width conditions, or use Wireless Diagnostics on a Mac. A connected Wi-Fi icon does not rule out an app, website, or firewall problem.
