How to Protect Your Organization from Cyberattacks: A Practical Security Checklist

Prioritize account security, software updates, protected and tested backups, and incident readiness with this adaptable cybersecurity checklist.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect your organization by first securing important accounts, keeping systems updated, protecting and testing backups, and preparing to detect and respond to incidents. No checklist can prevent every attack, but a prioritized, regularly maintained set of controls can reduce risk and help your organization recover. Scale the work to your size, sector, systems, data, and available resources.

Use a framework to set priorities

For a practical starting point, use the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0 Small Business Quick-Start Guide, published in February 2024. It is aimed especially at smaller organizations with modest or no existing cybersecurity plans, and supplements—not replaces—the framework. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Cross-Sector Cybersecurity Performance Goals (CPGs) offer voluntary, prioritized baseline actions intended to help organizations focus on high-impact measures.

CISA organizes cybersecurity work around six functions: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. Use them to make sure your plan covers more than prevention. The CPGs can be tailored to an organization’s maturity, technology, risks, and sector; they do not by themselves establish compliance with the NIST CSF or any law.

Work through this prioritized security checklist

  1. Identify what matters and who owns it

Make an inventory of important systems, accounts, devices, data, and externally hosted services. Assign someone responsible for each, and note which business operations depend on them. This gives you a basis for deciding what to protect first and what must be restored quickly after an incident. Revisit the inventory when your systems or business change.

  2. Secure accounts and access

Require multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever available, starting with administrator accounts, remote access, email, and accounts that can reach sensitive information. Prefer phishing-resistant MFA when the identity provider and applications support it. Require strong, unique passwords, replace manufacturer default passwords, and consider a password manager.

When choosing MFA, check phishing resistance, compatibility with your identity provider and applications, account recovery options, and the effort needed to deploy and support it. CISA says any MFA is better than none and recommends phishing-resistant options. It identifies hardware-based FIDO or Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) tokens as strong options; confirm compatibility and recovery procedures before selecting a key or token.

MFA approach What the guidance establishes What to verify
Any available MFA CISA says using MFA is better than using none. Whether it works with the organization’s accounts and applications, and how users recover access.
Phishing-resistant MFA CISA recommends this form where supported. Compatibility with the identity provider and applications, enrollment and support effort, and recovery procedures.
Hardware-based FIDO or PKI token CISA identifies these as phishing-resistant hardware-based options. Whether the specific systems support the token and how access is recovered if it is unavailable.
  3. Keep systems maintained

Install operating-system and software updates when they become available, maintain updated antivirus protection, and remove or secure unnecessary accounts and services. Patch management is ongoing: decide who monitors updates and how your organization handles systems that cannot be updated promptly.

  4. Make phishing easier to report and harder to exploit

Train employees on basic security hygiene, phishing, and ransomware. Give staff a clear, quick way to report suspicious messages, and make sure someone is responsible for reviewing reports. Training should complement, not replace, MFA and other account protections.

  5. Protect backups and prove they can be restored

Back up business data regularly and protect backup copies from unauthorized access or alteration. Set backup frequency and retention based on two business decisions: how much data you can afford to lose and how quickly operations need to resume. Test restoration so you know the copies are usable and the recovery steps work.

  6. Prepare to detect and respond

Enable and review appropriate logs for business systems. Decide who assesses alerts, who can isolate affected accounts or devices, and who contacts leadership and outside parties when needed. Depending on the incident and your organization, that may include IT providers, legal counsel, insurers, regulators, or law enforcement.

Adapt the checklist to your organization

Use the same priorities, but set implementation details according to the systems and consequences involved. Consider expected risk reduction, fit with existing systems, implementation effort, ongoing maintainability, and whether you can verify that a control works. CISA says its CPGs were selected for significant risk reduction, clear actionability, and reasonable implementability, while allowing organizations to tailor actions.

  • Small organizations: Start by assigning clear owners and securing the accounts, devices, and data essential to keeping the business operating. NIST’s small-business guide is designed particularly for organizations with modest or no existing cybersecurity plans.
  • Organizations with sensitive or regulated data: Determine which legal, contractual, sector, and jurisdictional requirements apply. General U.S. government guidance is not a sector-specific implementation plan or legal compliance opinion; applicable requirements depend on the organization and the data it handles.
  • Organizations relying on outside services: Include externally hosted services in the inventory and identify the accounts and business operations that depend on them. Account for those dependencies when planning access controls and recovery.

What the checklist can—and cannot—do

These controls reduce exposure and improve readiness; they do not guarantee immunity from cyberattacks. A prevention-only plan also leaves gaps: CISA’s framework-oriented guidance includes detecting incidents, responding to them, and recovering operations alongside protective measures.

CISA has reported historical small-business figures of three times the likelihood of being targeted compared with larger companies and $2.4 billion in cybercrime costs to small businesses in 2021. These are historical figures reported by CISA, not a current estimate or forecast.
