There is no single BIOS setting that fixes every slow NVMe SSD. First check whether the drive is in a motherboard M.2 slot that supports its PCIe generation and lane width; then check the board manual for shared lanes and any model-specific BIOS controls. The drive, CPU, slot used, and other installed devices can all affect the connection the system provides.
What “half speed” actually means
The phrase can describe different problems. A benchmark’s sequential read or write result is not the same thing as the PCIe link negotiated between the SSD and the system. Before changing settings, note the exact benchmark result and inspect what your system reports for the link’s generation and lane width.

M.2 describes a physical form factor, not a guarantee of a particular connection. PCI-SIG’s M.2 reference material describes Socket 3 configurations supporting up to four PCIe lanes, while configurations can use fewer. The specific socket’s capabilities depend on the motherboard.
Check the exact M.2 slot and its lane sharing
- Identify the hardware. Record the motherboard and CPU models, SSD model, M.2 slot in use, BIOS version, operating system, and the tool and result that led you to call the drive “half speed.”
- Find the slot specifications in the motherboard manual. Check its maximum PCIe generation and lane width, supported drive types, and any CPU-dependent limitations. Do not assume that every M.2 socket on the same board offers the same connection.
- Read the board’s lane-sharing table. Look for notes explaining whether using that M.2 socket disables or reduces another expansion slot, shares bandwidth with SATA ports, or depends on another installed device. ASRock notes that M.2 sockets can share lanes with PCIe slots or SATA ports; MSI also describes board-specific lane sharing and BIOS modes in its guidance.
- Compare the negotiated link with the specifications. Check whether the reported generation and lane width match what the SSD and that particular slot support. If they do not, check drive seating and relevant firmware notes, and consult the motherboard or SSD vendor about the exact CPU-and-board configuration.
Which BIOS setting should you change?
Only investigate BIOS options after identifying the motherboard and reading its documentation. Names, menu locations, and effects vary by model; a setting documented for one board is not a universal fix. MSI’s article gives a board-family-specific lane-configuration example, while ASRock’s FAQ illustrates that M.2 sharing depends on the board design. Follow the manual for your exact model rather than copying another board’s menu path.

Pay particular attention to lane configuration or bifurcation options. Splitting lanes among devices can be necessary for a particular setup, but it redistributes available lanes; it does not create more bandwidth. Changing such a mode can therefore trade one device’s connection for another’s rather than speed up the SSD.

A replacement may make sense if the current drive is faulty or you independently want an upgrade. It will not overcome a limit imposed by the motherboard slot, CPU compatibility, or lane sharing. Before buying, match the drive’s PCIe generation, maximum lane width, M.2 physical length, and protocol to the slot and system. PCI-SIG’s listing for the ADATA SM2P41C8, for example, identifies a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 2280 NVMe SSD—illustrating why “M.2” alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
