Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a movie marathon built around “One Terrible Decision Ruined Everything,” the seven-film lineup is Fargo, A Simple Plan, Nightcrawler, Uncut Gems, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Parasite and Requiem for a Dream. The theme is less a genre than a useful way to connect very different films: each follows consequences gathering around choices that seemed tempting, manageable or worth the risk.
The lineup comes from Elton Jones’s September 12, 2026 feature for Tom’s Guide, which asked ChatGPT and Gemini to suggest films about people dealing with the fallout of a decision that turns life upside down. Jones attributed four picks to ChatGPT and three to Gemini. His account is a personal viewing report, not a controlled comparison of the chatbots or a current streaming-availability guide.

Which movies made the “one terrible decision” marathon?
ChatGPT’s four picks
- Fargo: Jerry’s scheme sets off a chain of events that spirals beyond his control.
- A Simple Plan: Keeping money the characters find becomes the pivotal choice.
- Nightcrawler: Lou Bloom repeatedly accepts moral compromises that serve his ambitions.
- Uncut Gems: The central character keeps passing up chances to stop gambling.
Gemini’s three picks
- Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead: A heist gone wrong drives a family tragedy.
- Parasite: The characters’ escalating choices shift social satire toward a claustrophobic thriller.
- Requiem for a Dream: Small ill-advised choices accumulate into a downward spiral.
Jones included a ChatGPT-generated description of the theme: “This theme is perfect for a slow-burn-to-total-disaster marathon: every movie starts with someone making a choice that seems understandable, tempting, or even smart — and then spends the rest of its runtime proving that it absolutely was not.” That is the chatbot’s phrasing as reproduced by Jones, not a critic’s assessment.

The films offer different kinds of escalation, so the order can change the mood of the night. A contained scheme gives way to repeated individual decisions, then to consequences that engulf families or groups. This is one way to sequence the premise, not an official ranking or a claim that the films have equal tones.
#1 Best Overall
- Start with the scheme: Watch Fargo and A Simple Plan for stories organized around a consequential plan or choice.
- Move to persistence: Follow with Nightcrawler and Uncut Gems, where the pattern is a series of choices that continue to deepen the trouble.
- Expand the fallout: Close with Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, Parasite and Requiem for a Dream, which the feature frames around consequences spreading through a family, group or accumulating chain of decisions.
Jones said he especially enjoyed Nightcrawler for its portrait of a man pursuing success by any means, Uncut Gems for its depiction of repeatedly betting big, and Parasite for the shades of gray among its characters. Those are his personal reactions, rather than an objective ranking of the seven.

Jones reported watching the films across Tubi, Pluto TV, Sling TV, The Roku Channel and YouTube, and said most were free for his viewing. His feature does not map each film to a service, establish that every service carried any particular title, or specify a geography that would make the information a dependable current guide.
