Then corroborate named grants and identities in funder, institutional, or government records. A disclosed relationship is evidence that a relationship exists; it is not proof that the study is wrong or biased.
No particular study is identified by this title, so it would be misleading to name a funder or accuse an author of benefiting. The method below is designed to apply to a specific paper, preprint, conference version, or report.

Start with the exact paper, not a search-result summary
Funding and conflict information can change between a preprint and a peer-reviewed version. Before drawing conclusions, save the paper’s exact title, complete author list, publication date, journal or conference, DOI or stable URL, and version label. Record whether it is a preprint, accepted manuscript, version of record, technical report, or policy paper. A later version may add an author, correct an affiliation, update a grant number, or use a different disclosure form.
Search engines and secondary articles often omit footnotes, supplementary files, and publisher forms. Open the full document and the landing page at the venue that published it. If two versions exist, compare their funding, acknowledgements, competing-interest, and author-note sections rather than assuming the newest text applies to every copy.

1. Locate every place a relationship can be disclosed
Read beyond the paragraph headed “Funding.” Journals put relevant information in different locations, and one author may have a separate declaration from the rest of the team.

The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) says authors should disclose relationships and activities that might bias, or be seen to bias, their work. The American Psychological Association (APA) likewise asks authors to disclose interests that could reasonably be perceived as conflicts. Consult the target venue’s current policy because publisher requirements and the location of statements vary. ICMJE author-responsibility recommendations and APA publishing policies are useful policy references.
2. Separate direct project funding from general support
“Supported by” can describe very different arrangements. Ask what resource reached this project and what resource merely supported an author’s employment or institution.

ICMJE recommends that funding statements describe direct support and distinguish it from general institutional support. Copy the sponsor’s full legal or registry name and the award identifier exactly as printed. If the statement names only an institution and gives no award number, report that limitation rather than treating the institution as a confirmed project funder.
3. Check what the sponsor was allowed to do
A funder’s identity is only part of the record. The more consequential question is whether the sponsor participated in decisions that could shape the result or restrict publication.
- Study design: Look for a statement about who chose the research question, evaluation method, model, benchmark, sample, or safety definition.
- Data collection: Check whether the sponsor supplied, selected, filtered, or had exclusive access to data, incident reports, model outputs, or participants.
- Analysis and interpretation: Identify who ran the analysis, set exclusion rules, selected comparisons, and interpreted uncertainty.
- Writing: See whether sponsor employees drafted, edited, approved, or merely reviewed the manuscript.
- Data access: Check who retained the underlying data and whether independent authors could inspect it.
- Submission and publication: Look for the authors’ right to submit, publish negative findings, disclose limitations, and retain control of the final text.
Elsevier’s publishing-ethics policy asks authors to disclose a sponsor’s role across design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, writing, and the decision to submit. ICMJE cautions authors against agreements that interfere with access to data, independent analysis, manuscript preparation, or publication. Read the paper’s “Role of the funder,” “Author contributions,” data-availability statement, and any protocol or contract summary together; a short sentence in one section may be qualified in another.
Do not infer control merely because a sponsor is commercially interested or because an author works at a funded institution. Instead, distinguish a documented role, an explicit statement that the sponsor had no role, and an unanswered question. “The funder had no role in the study” is a specific claim about the arrangement; it is not equivalent to a missing role statement.

4. Map what the authors may stand to gain
Authors can have interests that are financial, professional, institutional, personal, or intellectual. Your job is to document the relationship and explain its connection to the study, not to convert a possibility into an allegation.
Financial interests
- Employment or salary support from a company, nonprofit, government body, or laboratory with a stake in the topic.
- Consulting fees, advisory roles, speaking fees, honoraria, or paid expert testimony.
- Stocks, options, ownership, or other equity whose value could change with perceptions of AI risk, safety products, regulation, or a particular technical approach.
- Patents, licenses, or pending applications related to a model, evaluation method, security technique, or mitigation.
- Research grants, fellowships, or future funding that depend on a programme, field, or policy direction.
Non-financial and institutional interests
- Leadership or employment in an institution whose public mission or policy position is directly connected to the question.
- Academic competition, a strong prior commitment to a theory, or a professional stake in a research programme’s success.
- Personal or professional relationships that the venue’s policy treats as relevant.
- Institutional ties that affect access to data, models, facilities, or regulators.
ICMJE notes that a relationship or activity does not automatically indicate problematic influence, while perceptions of conflict can erode trust. Describe the documented interest, the study element it could bear on, and any safeguards such as independent analysis, preregistration, data access, or multiple institutions. Do not claim that a disclosed consultancy caused a conclusion unless the record provides evidence of that causal link.
5. Verify the named funder and award
Once you have a sponsor name and award number, corroborate them outside the paper. Crossref’s Open Funder Registry supports standardized funder names and identifiers and can help locate publications carrying funding metadata. Its funding-metadata guidance explains how publishers deposit award information. Use both resources as corroboration, not as a replacement for the paper’s own statement.

- Match spelling variants to a funder identifier.
- See whether the publisher deposited funding metadata for the article.
- Find other publications associated with the same funder record.
Crossref funding-data deposit guidance explains what publishers may submit, including funder names, identifiers, and award numbers. Compare the registry result with the article character for character: a similar name can refer to a different organization, and a broad institutional name can conceal a specific programme.
Then search the funder’s own award database or announcement for the grant number, recipient, project title, dates, and amount when those details are public. An award record can establish that support existed, but it may not describe the sponsor’s role in analysis or publication. Conversely, a paper may acknowledge a small award that has no searchable public record.
How to interpret a missing match
A blank Crossref result does not prove that no funding existed. Funder names can be ambiguous, identifiers may be omitted, and publisher metadata deposits can be incomplete. An award database may use a different project title, archive older awards separately, or disclose only the lead institution. Report the exact search performed and say that no matching record was found in the sources checked; do not write “the study had no funding.”
6. Confirm author identity and affiliation
Affiliations are evidence about where an author worked or studied when the paper was published, not a complete biography. Compare the paper’s affiliation line with an official institutional profile, laboratory page, grant page, or employer biography when the relationship is material.

OpenAlex author profiles can help discover publications and possible affiliations, but they are not decisive identity records. Automated profiles may merge researchers with similar names or retain an outdated affiliation. The service’s guidance explains these privacy and matching limitations: OpenAlex author-profile guidance. Confirm a consequential match with an institutional page, ORCID record linked by the author, a grant record, or another primary source.

A common name can produce false matches; an unusual name can still belong to two researchers. If you cannot establish that two records refer to the same person, label the connection as unconfirmed.
7. Use public institutional and government records when relevant
Public bodies sometimes publish grants, collaboration details, declarations of interest, or freedom-of-information releases. These records can add provenance, but they are examples of possible evidence, not proof that an unnamed paper received a particular grant.
For a UK example, the AI Security Institute’s grants page describes its AI safety and security programmes. When accessed on 4 October 2026, it said the programmes were not currently accepting applications: AI Security Institute grants. That status is time-sensitive and applies to those UK programmes; it does not establish funding for any individual study.
The UK government’s organisation page for the AI Safety Institute links transparency material, including an October 2024 freedom-of-information release concerning declarations of interest: UK government AI Safety Institute page. Government records can show an official relationship or disclosure, but they may use programme names or dates that differ from a paper. Match the person, institution, award, and period before connecting the record to a study.

8. Compare two studies on identical axes
When you are comparing papers, use the same questions for each. A disclosure is not a quality score, and a longer statement is not automatically a more independent study.

Use the table to compare transparency and independence safeguards, not to declare a winner. One study may have a commercial sponsor with a clearly documented firewall and unrestricted publication rights; another may have public funding but an unexplained data-access restriction. The relevant question is what the evidence shows about each arrangement.

9. Label evidence, inference, and unknowns separately
Clear wording prevents readers from mistaking a plausible incentive for a proven influence.
Documented fact
Use formulations such as “The paper reports that…” “The funder’s award record lists…” or “The author’s institutional biography says…” Attach the statement to the source that actually establishes it.

Reasoned inference
Say “This could create an incentive to emphasize…” only when you can identify the relationship and explain why it connects to the study’s subject. Make clear that an incentive is a possibility, not evidence that the authors acted on it.
Unknown or incomplete record
Say “The article does not state…” or “No matching award was found in the records checked.” Specify which version and sources you examined. Avoid categorical claims such as “there was no funding” or “the authors have no conflicts” when the disclosure is absent, vague, or limited to one venue.
10. A repeatable verification workflow
Use this sequence for each paper and save the pages or PDFs you consulted, because online records can change.
- Identify the version and venue. Record title, authors, date, journal or conference, DOI or stable link, and whether it is a preprint or peer-reviewed publication.
- Collect all disclosures. Read funding, acknowledgements, competing interests, author notes, supplementary files, linked forms, and the venue’s policy.
- List every support source. Separate direct project funding from general institutional support, salary or fellowship funding, and in-kind contributions. Copy grant numbers exactly.
- Trace the sponsor’s role. Note statements about design, data, analysis, interpretation, writing, access, and submission or publication rights.
- Extract author interests. Record employment, consulting, equity, honoraria, patents, testimony, grants, and relevant non-financial or institutional relationships.
- Cross-check awards. Search Crossref’s Open Funder Registry, the funder’s own award records, and institutional grant pages. Treat unmatched metadata as inconclusive.
- Verify identities. Compare affiliations and biographies, using OpenAlex as a discovery aid rather than final proof.
- Check public records. Where a government institute or public body is involved, look for grant announcements, transparency pages, or freedom-of-information disclosures.
- Write three columns. Put documented facts, plausible inferences, and unknowns in separate notes before drafting your conclusion.
11. How to explain what authors stand to gain
Readers usually want more than a sponsor’s name: they want to know whether an author could benefit from a particular interpretation. Start with the concrete relationship. For example, an employment or consulting relationship may provide income; equity may rise or fall with market expectations; a patent may benefit from adoption; a grant may support a laboratory or future work; and a public institutional role may advance a policy mission or research programme.

A financial relationship is more directly relevant when the study evaluates a product, model, service, standard, or regulatory position in which the author or sponsor has a stake. A broad institutional affiliation may be less specific. Explain the connection and any countervailing safeguards, such as independent analysis, access to underlying data, preregistration, multiple authors from different institutions, or an explicit right to publish.
Do not assign motives that the record does not establish. The existence of a possible benefit can justify scrutiny without proving selective analysis, misconduct, or false results. Readers should be able to see the relationship and judge its relevance themselves.
12. Interpret disclosures without treating them as verdicts
Funding transparency and conflict disclosure serve two different purposes. A funding statement answers who supplied resources; a competing-interest statement answers which relationships or activities could matter to the work or how it is perceived. One can be detailed while the other is brief.
ICMJE summarizes the caution well: “Although the presence of a relationship or activity does not always indicate a problematic influence on a paper’s content, perceptions of conflict may erode trust in science as much as actual conflicts of interest.” Read the full recommendation at ICMJE’s disclosure guidance.

Conversely, a clean-looking disclosure does not establish that a study is sound; it only tells you what the authors and venue reported. Assess the scientific claims separately using the paper’s methods, evidence, limitations, and replication record.
13. Account for changing rules and records
ICMJE recommendations are cross-disciplinary guidance used by ICMJE member journals and encouraged for adoption by other journals. APA and Elsevier publish their own policies, so the target venue’s current rules control the exact form, timing, and location of required statements. Save the policy version or access date when a dispute depends on whether a disclosure was required.
Web pages, grant databases, and author profiles can be updated, retired, or corrected. Note access dates, preserve stable PDFs where permitted, and distinguish a record that was unavailable from one that was searched and produced no match. Programme status is especially time-sensitive: the AI Security Institute grants page’s 4 October 2026 status should not be generalized to another date or country.
