On Windows 11, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Performance, and choose each GPU entry. The model name appears at the top and the graphs show activity. Keep the program you are checking open while you watch the graphs. This tells you both which graphics processors Windows detects and which one is doing work at that moment.
There are two related questions: which GPU is installed, and which GPU is currently handling a particular app. A GPU listed in Windows is not automatically the GPU rendering every program, especially on laptops with integrated and discrete graphics.

First, separate “installed” from “currently in use”
A graphics processing unit (GPU) handles graphics-related work. In a desktop, a discrete GPU is a separate expansion card plugged into the motherboard. A computer can also have integrated graphics, where the graphics processor is built into the system’s processor or platform. Windows may expose both devices at the same time.

Merely seeing a GPU in a list does not prove that a particular app is rendering on it.

The quickest method: Task Manager
Task Manager is the best first choice when you need the model name and current activity in one place. Microsoft documents the Windows 11 path in How to Check Your GPU and Why It Matters.
Open the GPU performance view
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Performance in the navigation pane. If the compact view is shown, choose More details first.
- Select the first GPU entry. If the computer has more than one GPU, repeat this for every GPU entry.
- Read the model name shown at the top of the page. The same page provides utilization graphs and other live performance information.
The name at the top identifies the device Windows has detected. The graphs are useful for the “which one is working?” question: start or bring the target game, editor, browser workload, or other program to the foreground, then observe which GPU entry shows activity. Check each GPU separately rather than assuming that a particular number represents a particular hardware type.

Watch activity without drawing the wrong conclusion
Leave Task Manager open while the program runs, or switch between the program and Task Manager and compare the graphs over the same period. A spike on one entry while the program performs a graphics-heavy action is evidence that the GPU is handling work at that moment. Low or changing utilization is not, by itself, a failure; an application may be waiting on the processor, storage, network, a frame limiter, or a workload that does not continuously stress the GPU.
Use the model name and the live graphs together. A GPU can be installed and visible but idle. Conversely, an integrated GPU can show activity even when a discrete card is also present. Microsoft’s explanation of how GPUs appear in Task Manager covers the multi-GPU view in GPUs in the task manager.

When more than one GPU is listed
Task Manager lists multiple GPUs separately and supplies performance data for each. This is common on laptops that combine integrated graphics with a discrete GPU, and it can also occur in desktops with more than one graphics device.
| What you want to know | What to do in Task Manager | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Which graphics devices Windows detects | Open Performance and record the model at the top of every GPU entry. | The devices currently exposed to Windows as GPUs. |
| Which device is active during a workload | Run the program and watch the graphs for each GPU entry. | Which entries show activity during the observed workload. |
| Whether a listed GPU is always the renderer | Do not infer this from the device list alone; observe the entries while the app runs. | A list alone does not identify an app’s current rendering GPU. |
Do not label “GPU 0” as integrated or “GPU 1” as discrete without reading the model names. The numbering is an identifier in that Task Manager session, not a universal rule for hardware type.

Windows 11 also exposes GPU information in the display settings.
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select Display.
- Open Advanced display.
- Look for the GPU information shown for the selected display.
This route is useful when you want a settings-based overview and do not need live utilization graphs. The cited Microsoft instructions are specifically for Windows 11, and labels or placement can change in another Windows release. If you need to identify which GPU is doing work for an application, use Task Manager instead and watch the entries while that application runs.
Use Device Manager to identify installed display devices
Device Manager is a fallback when you only need to inspect hardware that Windows has enumerated.

- Open the Start menu and search for Device Manager.
- Open the result.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Read the name of each device listed there.
Microsoft’s Using Device Manager documentation explains that the utility displays information about devices. The entries under Display adapters identify installed display devices visible to Windows, including more than one adapter when present.
Device Manager is not a live per-application monitor. It can tell you what is installed or recognized, but it cannot by itself establish which adapter is rendering a particular program at this instant. For that question, return to Task Manager’s GPU performance pages.
Use DirectX Diagnostic Tool for a diagnostic report
DxDiag provides an additional built-in way to inspect Windows and DirectX information and export a report.
- Open Windows Search and type
dxdiag. - Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- Review the information available in the tool’s tabs, including the system information and DirectX version details.
- Select Save All Information if you need a text report to share with support or keep for your records.
Microsoft’s instructions for opening DxDiag and saving the report are in Which version of DirectX is on your PC?. The exact graphics fields and tab layout can differ between Windows versions, so use DxDiag as a diagnostic supplement rather than assuming every release presents identical GPU details. DxDiag also does not replace Task Manager for observing which GPU is active for a running app.
How to interpret the GPU names
Integrated graphics
Integrated graphics share the computer’s platform rather than being a separate desktop expansion card. A laptop may use integrated graphics for everyday work and involve a discrete GPU for a demanding workload. Seeing an integrated adapter in Task Manager or Device Manager is therefore normal, not evidence that a separate card is missing.

Discrete graphics
A discrete desktop GPU is a separate card installed in the system. It may appear alongside integrated graphics, particularly when the processor or motherboard also exposes an integrated adapter. Read the complete model name shown by Windows instead of relying on the GPU entry number.
Why the display connection does not answer every usage question
The display settings page gives information associated with the selected display, while Task Manager reports GPU entries and their activity. On a system with multiple adapters, those views answer slightly different questions. If your goal is to find the renderer for one program, use the live Task Manager view while that program is operating.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical check for a specific game or application
Use this sequence when “which graphics card is my PC using?” really means “which GPU is this program using?”
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Choose Performance and note the model name for every GPU entry.
- Start the game or application you want to check.
- Perform the action that should create graphics work, such as opening the target scene, playing a video, or loading the project.
- Return to Task Manager and inspect each GPU’s utilization graphs during that activity.
- Record which GPU entries show activity and the model names attached to those entries.
- Repeat the observation during a second graphics-heavy action if the first result was brief or ambiguous.
This is an observation of the workload at the time you checked it. An application can change its workload, use different GPUs for different tasks, or spend much of its time doing non-graphics work. Therefore, report the model and the observed activity rather than claiming that a listed GPU is permanently assigned to the program.
Choosing the right Windows tool
| Tool | Best for | What it shows | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task Manager > Performance > GPU | Fast identification plus live activity | GPU model names and performance graphs for each listed GPU | A listed device is not automatically the renderer for every app; observe it while the app runs. |
| Settings > System > Display > Advanced display | A Windows 11 display overview | GPU information associated with the display view | Not a live per-app usage monitor. |
| Device Manager > Display adapters | Installed-device identification | Display devices enumerated by Windows | Does not show current per-application GPU activity. |
| DxDiag | Additional diagnostics and a shareable report | System and DirectX information, with an option to save all information | Fields and tabs can vary by Windows version; it is not a live usage graph. |
What to do when the result is unclear
Only one GPU appears
Record the model name shown in Task Manager or under Display adapters. The fact that only one entry is visible in that tool means Windows is currently presenting one GPU there; it does not justify guessing about hardware that is not listed. Use DxDiag’s saved report if you need to provide the system details to support personnel.
Best Value
Several GPUs appear but the wrong one seems active
Check the model names first, then repeat the observation while the application is performing a graphics-heavy action. Do not use “GPU 0” or “GPU 1” as a shortcut for integrated versus discrete. If activity shifts between entries, note the workload and the time rather than treating one brief spike as a permanent assignment.
Task Manager and another tool show different names
The tools have different purposes and presentation contexts. Task Manager focuses on GPU performance entries, Settings focuses on display information, Device Manager lists enumerated devices, and DxDiag supplies diagnostic details. Compare the full model names and use Task Manager for the live-usage question.
The Windows labels do not match this guide exactly
The Settings procedure cited here is for Windows 11, and Microsoft can revise interface labels in later releases. Search for the closest equivalent of Advanced display, Performance, GPU, or Display adapters. The underlying distinction remains the same: use a device list to identify installed hardware and a live performance view to observe activity.
Recommended workflow
For most people, start with Task Manager. It answers the two practical questions with the fewest steps: the model name appears at the top of each GPU page, and the graphs let you observe activity while an application runs. Use Advanced display when you only need a Windows 11 settings overview, Device Manager when you need an installed-device list, and DxDiag when you need extra system and DirectX details in a report.
No additional hardware, upgrade accessory, repair utility, or paid diagnostic software is required to check the GPU using these Windows tools.
