Once Upon A KATAMARI launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 8, 2026. A Nintendo Switch copy also runs on Switch 2, and Bandai Namco says a free update improves its performance and adds mouse controls. Those are different arrangements, with different save and DLC rules.
For a reliable start, choose a steering scheme in Settings > General > Control Type, learn movement in an open area, use accessible objects to grow before returning to tight obstacles, and press ZR to activate power items when using the documented Nintendo Switch controls. Switch 2 mouse gestures are available but are not fully documented in the official material, so follow the prompts on your own control screen rather than relying on an unverified gesture chart.

Which Once Upon A KATAMARI version is on your console?
Your setup determines which improvements, controls and transfer rules apply. Use this distinction before changing systems or buying downloadable content.
| Situation | What is confirmed | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Native Switch 2 version | Launched October 8, 2026; described by Bandai Namco as having smoother frame rates, enhanced graphics and exclusive mouse controls compared with the Switch version. | Switch-version DLC is not usable in this edition; compatible Switch 2 DLC must be purchased separately. |
| Switch version played on Switch 2 | A free update improves performance and unlocks mouse controls. | This remains the Switch edition, not the separate native Switch 2 release. Save migration is subject to the condition that the Switch 2 system does not already contain save data for the game. |
| Switch version played on original Switch hardware | The original Switch edition remains playable with its ordinary control options. | The Switch 2 mouse feature is not available on original Switch hardware. |
Bandai Namco’s October 8, 2026 launch announcement describes the newer version this way: "Once Upon A KATAMARI for Nintendo Switch 2 introduces exclusive new mouse controls, alongside smoother framerate and enhanced graphics from the Nintendo Switch version." That statement describes the native Switch 2 release; it should not be read as proof that every Switch feature is identical on every console.
#1 Best Overall
- Build whatever you can imagine in your own infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
Choose a steering scheme before you learn advanced movement
The official material reviewed does not provide a complete movement-button chart. An independent Keymap Labs controls guide describes two schemes and places the selector at Settings > General > Control Type. Treat that guide as secondary guidance and confirm the labels on your own in-game screen, especially if you have remapped inputs.
| Control type | How the independent guide describes it | Who may prefer it |
|---|---|---|
| Usual Stuff | Both sticks steer the katamari. The sticks behave like the two tracks of a tank, so coordinating them produces turns and forward or backward movement. | Players comfortable coordinating two sticks and making quick direction changes. |
| Simple | The left stick rolls the katamari while the right stick looks around. | Players who find two-stick tank-style steering confusing or prefer a dedicated movement stick. |
- Pause the game and open Settings.
- Select General, then Control Type.
- Try Usual Stuff in a clear area, then switch to Simple if controlling both sticks feels awkward.
- Keep the scheme that lets you turn without looking down at the controller. You can change it later if a stage demands a different feel.
Do not infer missing button assignments from a video or an old control list. The current official material does not publish a full chart, and mouse or remapped-input prompts can differ from a standard controller layout.
How do I use the power items in the game?
Bandai Namco Europe’s official FAQ gives the documented Nintendo Switch instruction: press ZR to activate a power item. Examples include the magnet, timer and rocket. On Switch 2, read the current on-screen prompt if you are using mouse input or a changed layout; the reviewed official sources do not specify a separate mouse gesture for each item.
The Tool Desk

Nintendo and Bandai Namco describe the magnet as drawing nearby objects toward the katamari. Use it when several collectible objects are close but awkwardly positioned, rather than wasting time trying to line up each one individually.
Timer
The timer is a time-management tool. Activate it when you are ready to make a concentrated collection run, not while you are still learning the camera or searching for a route. Because the official FAQ identifies the item but does not give a universal duration in the material reviewed, rely on the in-game indicator for the remaining effect.

- Once Upon a Time is a game in which the players work together to create a new fairy tale using elements from their cards like dungeons, giants, and cauldrons. Steer the story toward the secret ending you hold.
- To win the game, play all of your story cards and steer the story to the ending card held in your hand! And they all lived happily ever after…we hope
Rocket
The rocket is another power item named by the FAQ. Check the prompt and status display before activating it so you know what the current stage expects. Avoid assuming that an item behaves identically in every challenge unless the game explains that behavior.
How to build size without getting stuck
Katamari grows by collecting objects. The official sources do not establish a single numerical size cutoff for every obstacle, so a failed pickup should not be treated as proof of a universal measurement. Use this repeatable route instead:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start in open space. Spend the first moments learning how the katamari accelerates, reverses and pivots with your chosen control type.
- Take the easy cluster. Collect nearby objects that roll up cleanly. Early growth gives you more options than repeatedly attacking one obstacle that currently will not move.
- Return to the blocked route. After the katamari is visibly larger, approach the same obstacle from a straighter angle.
- Use terrain deliberately. Tight corners amplify steering errors. Enter them slowly, keep the camera oriented toward your exit and avoid making a last-second reversal.
- Save power items for a plan. The magnet is most useful near a dense group; a timed item is better used when you already know where the next collection run goes.
This is a cautious gameplay strategy rather than a quoted size rule. If an object still will not roll up, leave it, grow elsewhere and try again instead of searching for an undocumented threshold.
What changes with Switch 2 mouse controls?
Mouse controls are the headline Switch 2 addition. They are included in the native Switch 2 version and become available to owners of the Switch edition after the free update when that edition is played on Switch 2. The official launch and specification information confirms the feature but does not document each individual gesture.
- Open the game’s current control instructions before your first mouse-controlled stage.
- Follow the prompt shown for steering, camera movement and item activation rather than importing a gesture from another game.
- Check the control screen again after changing layouts or returning from another mode.
- Remember that mouse input cannot be used during online matches on Switch 2.
Do not assume that a Joy-Con 2 purchase is a separate requirement. The sources establish mouse-control availability but do not establish an additional controller product or mandatory configuration.

KatamariBall: online rules and practical setup
KatamariBall supports online competition for up to four players. Nintendo Switch Online is required for online play. Bandai Namco’s FAQ says you can create a private room and that CPUs fill unoccupied places; it also states that local play is unavailable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Maximum online players | Four participants. |
| Private rooms | Available; CPUs can fill empty places. |
| Local multiplayer | Unavailable according to the FAQ. |
| Subscription | Nintendo Switch Online is required for online play. |
| Mouse input in online matches | Unavailable on Switch 2. |
For a first online session, practice the same steering scheme in a solo stage, confirm your connection and open the room only after you know whether you are using controller input. If you switch to mouse controls for solo play, change back before entering an online match.
Save transfer and DLC: check before moving systems
Save migration
Bandai Namco says a Switch save can be transferred to Switch 2 only when the Switch 2 system does not already have save data for the game. The Japanese Switch 2 product information clarifies that migration is one-way, from Switch to Switch 2, and that there is no general cross-save system.
- Check whether the Switch 2 console already has save data for Once Upon A KATAMARI.
- If it does, do not assume the existing data can be overwritten or merged; the stated transfer condition is not met.
- If it does not, follow Nintendo’s system transfer or game-save migration process and verify the destination before deleting anything from the original Switch.
- Launch the game on Switch 2 and confirm your progress before treating the transfer as complete.
DLC compatibility
DLC bought for the Switch edition does not work in the Switch 2 edition. The compatible Switch 2 version of that DLC must be purchased separately. This is a version-compatibility rule, not a statement that your save has vanished, so check which game icon and edition you are launching before troubleshooting missing content.
Hardware, storage and play modes
Nintendo’s current store listing gives the following platform details:

Storage figures are the Nintendo store listing’s stated sizes, not a promise of the final free-space requirement after patches. Nintendo also warns that experience may differ on Switch Lite. The compatibility notice for the Switch game should not be confused with the separate native Switch 2 edition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What content is available for beginners?
Nintendo’s 2025 listing for the Switch game says players can choose among the Prince and 68 cousins. Treat the cousins as a roster choice rather than assuming every character changes movement physics; the reviewed material does not document a universal control modifier for each one.
Bandai Namco also lists the paid Rolling LIVE Highlights DLC across Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. It contains 10 quests, 6 cousins, 12 songs and 18 accessories. Prices and offers vary by regional storefront, so verify the edition and local store before buying. The counts describe the publisher’s package contents and do not establish that the DLC is included with the base game.
Switch or Switch 2: a decision checklist
Use these questions to avoid buying the wrong version or expecting an unavailable feature:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Do you already own the Switch copy? Playing it on Switch 2 can bring the free performance and mouse-control update; buying or launching the native Switch 2 edition follows separate edition rules.
- Do you want the newer presentation? The native Switch 2 version is the one Bandai Namco describes as having smoother frame rates and enhanced graphics.
- Is your progress important? Transfer is Switch-to-Switch 2 only and requires no existing destination save data.
- Do you own Switch DLC? It is not usable in the Switch 2 edition without buying the compatible version.
- Will you play KatamariBall online? Plan on Nintendo Switch Online, up to four players, no local mode and controller input rather than mouse input for online matches.
Quick troubleshooting for common beginner problems
The katamari will not turn as expected
Pause and verify the selected control type. If you are using Usual Stuff, remember that both sticks coordinate the two tank-like tracks; if that is uncomfortable, test Simple and use the right stick for looking around.
Best Value
A power item does nothing when you try a mouse gesture
Return to the in-game control prompt. The documented button instruction is ZR on Nintendo Switch, while official material reviewed here does not define the equivalent Switch 2 mouse gesture. Check for remapping before assuming the item is unavailable.
Online mode rejects mouse input
This is expected on Switch 2: mouse controls cannot be used during online matches. Select a supported controller layout before joining.
Your DLC is missing after changing editions
Confirm whether you launched the Switch or Switch 2 edition. Switch DLC is not compatible with the Switch 2 edition, which requires the corresponding DLC purchase.
Your save cannot be transferred
Check the destination console for existing save data. The publisher’s stated transfer condition requires that the Switch 2 system have no save data for the game, and the migration direction is Switch to Switch 2 rather than a two-way cloud save.
