Plan around the pre-load space requirement, not only the installed file size. After Update 9.7.0, Destiny 2 is estimated to occupy about 179–195 GB once installed, but a Steam or Epic Games Store update can require roughly 353 GB of free space while it downloads and installs. Bungie’s figures are estimates, and language selections can change them.
Destiny 2 does not provide a universal in-game switch for deleting individual campaigns, expansions, or language packages. To reclaim space safely, use your platform’s storage controls to remove other files first, or uninstall Destiny 2 and reinstall it when necessary. The steps and cautions below separate updating from a full reinstall so you do not delete more than intended.

Destiny 2 storage requirements by platform
Bungie’s Destiny Platform Storage Requirements table lists two different figures: the estimated installed file size and the free space needed to pre-load an installation. The second figure is the one to use when an update or reinstall is about to start.
| Platform | Estimated installed file size | Estimated pre-load installation space | Update 9.7.0 download size |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | 179.23 GB | 179.23 GB | 27.54 GB |
| PlayStation 4 | 178.79 GB | 235.32 GB | 26.71 GB |
| Xbox Series X|S | 195.36 GB | 195.36 GB | 39.29 GB |
| Xbox One | 183.94 GB | 183.94 GB | 36.70 GB |
| Steam | 180.90 GB | 353.00 GB | 28.40 GB |
| Epic Games Store | 180.65 GB | 352.56 GB | 27.18 GB |
| Microsoft Store for PC | 181.76 GB | 181.76 GB | 35.80 GB |
These are Bungie’s post-Update 9.7.0 estimates, not exact measurements. Bungie explicitly says that the listed file-size and storage-space requirements are not exact numbers. Small patches and hotfixes may not change the published table, while a major update or content release can change it. Some platform totals also vary according to the languages installed.

For a current check before a later major update, open Bungie’s storage-requirements page rather than relying on an old screenshot or a previous installation’s folder size.
How to read the numbers
The installed-size column is the approximate space occupied after the game is fully present on the drive. The pre-load column is a capacity target for the installation process. On PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and the Microsoft Store version for PC, Bungie currently lists the same number in both columns. That does not mean every future patch will behave identically; it means the published estimate does not show a larger temporary requirement for those entries.
PS4, Steam, and Epic Games Store are the important exceptions. The PS4 estimate rises from 178.79 GB installed to 235.32 GB for pre-loading. Steam rises from 180.90 GB to 353.00 GB, and Epic rises from 180.65 GB to 352.56 GB. If your drive has only enough room for the final installation, an update can still stop before it begins.

The installed file size describes the space occupied after the installation is complete. The pre-load figure describes the working room the platform may require while it downloads, stages, verifies, replaces, and installs files. Those are different phases, so a game that occupies about 181 GB can temporarily need substantially more.
The difference is especially large on PlayStation 4, Steam, and Epic Games Store in Bungie’s current table. Steam’s estimated installed size is 180.90 GB, but its pre-load requirement is 353.00 GB. Epic’s figures are 180.65 GB installed and 352.56 GB for pre-loading. Do not treat the update-download column as the free-space requirement: a 28.40 GB Steam download still corresponds to a 353.00 GB pre-load-space estimate.
Bungie does not describe one identical storage mechanism for every platform. The safe rule is practical: leave at least the published pre-load amount free on your own platform before starting an update or reinstall, and allow additional headroom if your platform reports a larger requirement.
Download size versus free-space requirement
Update 9.7.0 illustrates why these terms must remain separate. Bungie lists downloads of 27.54 GB on PS5, 26.71 GB on PS4, 39.29 GB on Xbox Series X|S, 36.70 GB on Xbox One, 28.40 GB on Steam, 27.18 GB on Epic Games Store, and 35.80 GB through the Microsoft Store. Those are the data-transfer amounts, not promises about the free space needed to finish installation. Installed languages can also change the download and final size.

Platform comparison and planning targets
Use the following comparisons when deciding how much space to clear:
- Smallest installed estimate: Epic Games Store at 180.65 GB, followed closely by Steam at 180.90 GB. The difference is less than a gigabyte, so it should not determine which launcher you choose.
- Largest installed estimate: Xbox Series X|S at 195.36 GB. It is still the pre-load figure that matters when an installation is underway.
- Largest temporary gap: Steam requires about 172 GB more pre-load room than its listed installed size; Epic requires about 172 GB more as well. PS4’s gap is about 56.5 GB.
- Equal published figures: PS5, both Xbox entries, and Microsoft Store for PC currently show the same installed and pre-load numbers.
These figures compare storage behavior only. They do not rank consoles, launchers, image quality, performance, or game features. Choose the row matching your account and installation, then follow the live requirement shown by that platform if it is higher.
Check your situation before deleting anything
- Identify the platform and edition. Check whether you are using PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, Epic Games Store, or the Microsoft Store version for PC. The figures are not interchangeable.
- Check free space in the platform’s storage screen. Compare it with the pre-load requirement, not just the installed-size number. If the platform is asking for more than Bungie’s estimate, follow the platform’s live message.
- Decide whether you are updating or reinstalling. An update may need temporary working space; a reinstall needs room for the download and the completed installation. A nearly full drive can fail even when the final game size appears to fit.
- Record the account you use. If you uninstall, plan to sign back in with the same PlayStation Network ID or Xbox Gamertag. Bungie’s console guidance says this preserves access to your characters and progress.
- Move or copy personal files first. Screenshots, video captures, downloads, and unrelated games are safer targets than Destiny 2’s installed files when you only need temporary room. Verify that a cloud service or external device has finished copying before deleting the original.
- Check every drive or library. On PC, confirm which library contains Destiny 2 and whether an older installation, duplicate shortcut, or partially downloaded copy is consuming space elsewhere.
Free space without touching Destiny 2
Bungie’s general remedy for an insufficient-space message is to delete or uninstall files until the platform reaches its minimum requirement. Start with content you can identify and restore easily.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
- Open the console’s Settings and go to Storage.
- Choose the console-storage category for games and applications, then sort or inspect the largest titles.
- Delete an unneeded game, application, capture, or media file. Use the console’s confirmation screen to check the selected item before accepting.
- Return to the storage display and confirm that the free-space total has increased enough for Destiny 2’s pre-load requirement.
Menu wording can differ between PS4 and PS5 system software. If you decide that Destiny 2 itself must be removed, use Bungie’s PlayStation 5 installation and reinstallation guide for the supported uninstall and reinstall process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsXbox Series X|S and Xbox One
- Open My games & apps, then open the management or storage view used by your Xbox system software.
- Review installed games, add-ons, captures, and other files by size.
- Select an unrelated item you no longer need, choose its uninstall or delete command, and confirm the correct title or file.
- Check the free-space figure again before retrying Destiny 2.
Xbox labels can change with system updates. Bungie’s Xbox Series X|S installation guide covers the Destiny-specific uninstall, reinstall, and update process; the same account caution applies when you sign back in.
Windows PC installations
Use the launcher and Windows storage controls that match your installation:
- Steam: In the Library, open Destiny 2’s management menu and choose the uninstall command. Steam then reports the space returned and lets you reinstall to a library with enough capacity.
- Epic Games Store: In the Library, open Destiny 2’s options menu and choose Uninstall. Confirm the correct installation location before deleting it.
- Microsoft Store: Use Windows Settings > System > Storage > Installed apps, locate Destiny 2, and use the app’s uninstall control. The exact label can vary by Windows release.
- Other files: Windows Storage settings can identify large temporary files, downloads, applications, and other games. Review each category manually; do not remove a folder merely because its name is unfamiliar.
After clearing space, restart the launcher and check its displayed requirement. A launcher can reserve working space before the download begins, so the amount shown there takes precedence over a simple folder-size calculation.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Destiny 2 safely
Uninstalling the game removes the local installation; it is not a selective content-management feature. Use it when freeing space for another purpose or when the installation is damaged and an update cannot complete.
What remains available after reinstalling
Use the same platform account after reinstalling. Bungie’s PlayStation and Xbox instructions specifically reference the same PSN ID or Xbox Gamertag for retaining access to characters and progress. The reinstall must still download the current game files and any separately installed add-ons required by your platform.
What a reinstall does not guarantee
- It does not guarantee a smaller final installation. The current build and installed languages determine the resulting size.
- It does not let you choose an exact campaign or expansion package to remove. Bungie’s published guidance does not provide a current, cross-platform inventory of removable Destiny packages or their individual space savings.
- It does not eliminate future update requirements. A newly installed copy may immediately need the latest patch before it can launch.
- It does not preserve local screenshots or clips automatically. Back up captures through the console or PC’s supported method before uninstalling or changing drives.
Reinstall sequence
- Confirm the account you will use and note the platform or launcher where you own the game.
- Uninstall Destiny 2 through the platform controls described above, or follow Bungie’s console guide.
- Restart the console or launcher if it still reports the old installation size.
- Begin the installation only after checking that the destination drive has the platform’s current pre-load requirement free.
- Allow the download, verification, and installation to finish without cancelling midway. If the platform offers separate add-ons, review each one before installing it.
- Launch the game with the same account and confirm that your characters and progress are present before deleting any remaining local backups or captures.
Can you delete individual Destiny 2 campaigns, expansions, or language packs?
There is no universal in-game storage manager documented by Bungie that lets every player select individual Destiny 2 campaigns, expansions, or language files and see an exact amount of space recovered. Package controls differ by platform, edition, and installed content. A setting that appears on one platform may not exist on another.
Do not assume that deleting a folder, a campaign directory, or an add-on will be safe or will save a predictable number of gigabytes. Bungie’s current storage page does not publish a per-package savings list. If your platform presents an official add-on management screen, read its description and note that removing an add-on can make related content unavailable until it is installed again.
Using an external drive for capacity
An external SSD or hard drive can provide additional capacity, but it is a platform-dependent solution rather than a Bungie-certified requirement. Before buying one, verify all of the following in your console or PC documentation:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Whether the platform supports the drive’s connection standard and capacity.
- Whether Destiny 2 can run directly from that drive or must be moved back to internal storage to play.
- Whether the drive needs a platform-specific format that erases existing data.
- Whether the drive’s free space is sufficient for the platform’s pre-load requirement, not merely the installed file size.
- Whether moving the game changes which edition, add-ons, or language files are detected.
Bungie’s storage page does not endorse a particular drive or verify play-from-drive behavior. Check the current PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, Steam, or Epic documentation for your exact hardware before purchasing or formatting external storage.
Update 9.7.0 and what may change later
Update 9.7.0 released on June 9, 2026. Bungie’s Monument of Triumph and Update 9.7.0 Support Guide lists the platform download sizes in the table above and says Destiny 2 will no longer receive planned live-service content updates after that release. Bungie also notes that future health or stability hotfixes may still be necessary.

The end of planned content updates does not make the storage figures permanent. Hotfixes, platform packaging, language selections, and later major changes can alter the amount shown by your launcher or console. Check Bungie’s storage table again whenever a later release reports a new requirement.

“Not enough space” appears even though the installed size fits
Compare free space with the pre-load figure for your platform. On PS4, Steam, and Epic, the gap between installed size and pre-load space is large enough to explain this message. Delete or move unrelated files until the platform reports more than the required amount, then retry the update.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe download is smaller than the space requirement
That is expected. Download size measures data transferred for the update; pre-load space measures the working room needed during installation. Use the latter for storage planning.
The platform still reports insufficient space after deleting a game
- Empty the platform’s recently deleted or recycle-bin area if one exists.
- Restart the console or launcher so its storage index refreshes.
- Check for captures, reserved space, duplicate installations, or a second library on another drive.
- Confirm that you removed the correct edition and that the free-space number increased.
- Retry only after the live platform message shows enough capacity.
The update repeatedly fails or starts over
Leave additional headroom beyond the estimate, close other downloads, and restart the platform before trying again. If the installation remains broken, use the platform’s official uninstall and reinstall path rather than deleting individual Destiny folders manually.
You cannot find a campaign or add-on to remove
That does not indicate a missing universal Destiny feature. The available package controls depend on the platform and edition, and Bungie does not publish a single cross-platform list of removable content with guaranteed savings. Remove other files or perform a complete reinstall instead of guessing which local files are safe.
A quick storage-maintenance routine
To avoid a last-minute update failure, check storage before a major release rather than when the download is already queued. Keep the platform’s storage page bookmarked, review large games and captures periodically, and leave a buffer above Bungie’s estimate when possible. On PC, keep the library drive and the Windows system drive in mind: the launcher may need temporary space on a different location from the game’s final folder.
When you need only a short-term amount of room, move captures or another re-downloadable game instead of uninstalling Destiny 2. After the update completes, verify the final installed size and restore moved files only if enough free capacity remains for another update. If you routinely fall below the pre-load target, an approved internal upgrade or compatible external drive may be more reliable than repeatedly deleting and downloading the game.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much storage does Destiny 2 need right now?
After Update 9.7.0, Bungie estimates 179.23 GB on PS5, 178.79 GB on PS4, 195.36 GB on Xbox Series X|S, 183.94 GB on Xbox One, 180.90 GB on Steam, 180.65 GB on Epic Games Store, and 181.76 GB through the Microsoft Store. Use the separate pre-load figures when updating or reinstalling.
Why does Steam or Epic require about 353 GB for Destiny 2?
The launcher’s pre-load requirement covers temporary working space for downloading, staging, verifying, and replacing files. Steam is listed at 353.00 GB and Epic at 352.56 GB for pre-loading, even though each final installation is about 181 GB.
Can I remove one Destiny 2 campaign to save space?
There is no universal Bungie-documented tool that provides selectable campaigns, expansions, or language packages with guaranteed savings on every platform. Use an official add-on screen only when your platform clearly identifies the package; otherwise remove unrelated files or reinstall the complete game.
Recommended Free Tools
Will uninstalling Destiny 2 erase my characters and progress?
Uninstalling removes the local game files. Reinstall through the platform and sign in with the same PlayStation Network ID or Xbox Gamertag; Bungie’s console guidance says this preserves access to characters and progress. Back up local captures separately.
Is an external SSD a guaranteed fix?
No. Compatibility, formatting, capacity limits, and whether Destiny 2 can run directly from the drive depend on the platform. Check current PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, Steam, or Epic documentation before buying or formatting a drive.
Are Bungie’s storage numbers exact?
No. Bungie labels the file-size and storage-space figures as estimates. Installed languages, small hotfixes, platform packaging, and later major updates can change the amount shown by your system.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Check your platform’s pre-load requirement before deleting anything. Clear unrelated games, captures, and files first; do not guess at Destiny 2 folders or assume an expansion can be removed safely. If a reinstall is necessary, use the platform’s official controls, keep the same account, and verify the current requirement again because Bungie’s figures are estimates that can change.
