On a working Mac Studio, choose Apple menu > About This Mac and note the model name and chip. Then use the model identifier to find the matching Apple Tech Specs page and check Connections and Expansion for the ports on that exact configuration. The front ports differ between Max and Ultra models, and a USB-C-shaped connector is not necessarily Thunderbolt.
Find your Mac Studio’s model and chip
- Open About This Mac: choose Apple menu > About This Mac. Apple calls this the easiest way to find your Mac’s model name. Note the model name and chip shown. Apple Support: Identify your Mac Studio model.
- Find the model identifier: compare your Mac Studio with the identifiers in Apple’s model guide. If the Mac is unavailable or will not start, Apple’s model-name and serial-number guidance is a fallback starting point.
- Open the matching technical specifications: use Apple’s Tech Specs page for your exact model and read Connections and Expansion. Apple advises searching Tech Specs using the model name from About This Mac. Apple’s port guidance.
Apple Support’s model guide, accessed October 4, 2026, lists these identifiers and front-port types. Its 2026 entries should be treated as entries in that guide on that date; for exact rear-port details, use the linked Tech Specs page for your model.

Apple’s 2025 Mac Studio Tech Specs and 2023 Mac Studio Tech Specs list these details. The 2026 model guide identifies the front ports, but use the current Tech Specs page for an M5 model’s complete rear-port counts and capabilities instead of extrapolating from an earlier generation.
USB-C shape does not tell you whether a port is Thunderbolt
USB-C describes the connector shape; Thunderbolt is a separate interface capability. Apple distinguishes USB-C, Thunderbolt 4, and Thunderbolt 5 in its guide to ports on Mac. Check the model’s Tech Specs and the markings beside the physical ports rather than relying on the shape alone.

This distinction matters for displays. On Mac Studio with M1 Max or M2 Max, Apple says the front USB-C ports are for external USB-C devices and points users to rear ports marked with the Thunderbolt symbol for external displays. On M1 Ultra and M2 Ultra, the front Thunderbolt 4 ports can connect displays or Thunderbolt devices. Apple also confirms display and device use for M3 Ultra’s front Thunderbolt 5 ports. Confirm the directions for your model before connecting a display.

Match the port to the device you want to connect
- For a display, confirm the port type and display support in the Tech Specs for your chip configuration; do not assume every USB-C port supports a display.
- For a dock or other peripheral, match its required interface and bandwidth to the Mac’s port and use a compatible cable.
- If the device’s connector does not match an available port, Apple says to use an adapter. An adapter changes connector compatibility; it does not make a USB-C port into Thunderbolt. See Apple’s port guidance.
