Soldiers from the 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, assembled and flew an Orqa MRM2-10 drone during a live-fire exercise at Grafenwoehr Training Area in Germany on September 30, 2026, according to Stars and Stripes. The unit-designed 3D-printed casing was part of the setup, but the report says the soldiers assembled the drone from manufacturer-supplied parts—not that they manufactured every component themselves. The account describes ball bearings as a possible modification; it does not say they were used in the demonstrated strike.

In its October 1, 2026 report, Stars and Stripes said soldiers with the 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, assembled, armed and flew an Orqa MRM2-10 during a live-fire exercise the previous day at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany.

The exercise used 250 grams of C-4 alongside M6 low-voltage blasting caps, according to the report. The drone flew from the launch site to a staged target more than a mile away in under five minutes. Those are descriptions of this exercise, not general performance statistics for the aircraft or drone warfare.

The report says soldiers assembled the drone from manufacturer-supplied parts and fitted it with an electronic safety and arming device and a unit-designed 3D-printed casing. In this context, “in-house” refers to unit-level assembly and design work; it should not be taken to mean the soldiers made every part of the drone.

The article says the printed cylinder could carry almost two pounds of explosives. That is a capability claim reported by Stars and Stripes, not an independently verified specification.
Were ball bearings used in the strike?
The report says ball bearings could be added as a modification for use against personnel. It does not say they were included in the casing used for the live strike. The confirmed payload detail for the exercise is the report’s account of 250 grams of C-4 and M6 low-voltage blasting caps; it does not establish that ball bearings were used.

What the Army-first claim does—and doesn’t—establish
Capt. Michael Bapp, a company commander, described the demonstration as “a conventional Army first, potentially an Army-wide first” for a live kinetic drone strike conducted without contractor or external-unit support. That is a qualified claim from unit leadership, not independent confirmation that the event was the first across the Army.
Col. Timothy Price, the regiment commander, said the successful strike showed the unit adapting systems made, armed and executed by its soldiers. These remarks describe the unit’s view of the exercise; they do not independently verify broader claims about military capability or effectiveness.

What the reported flight figures show
The drone’s reported flight to a staged target more than a mile away in under five minutes is specific to the exercise. Separately, 1st Lt. Eugene Lee, the reconnaissance platoon leader, said the drone could fly more than three miles, and beyond 12 miles with an additional receiver. Those range figures are Lee’s statements as reported by Stars and Stripes, not results from independent testing.
Lee also said the “Dragoon bomb” could be modified into a shaped charge, which he said could be effective against smaller tanks or armored personnel carriers. That is an attributed statement about a possible modification, not evidence that the exercise tested that configuration.
