How Google AI Overviews Affect SEO Rankings, Clicks, and Organic Traffic

AI Overviews may reduce clicks without changing a page’s conventional ranking. Here’s what the evidence shows—and how to check your site’s data.

Google AI Overviews are not a guaranteed SEO ranking penalty, but they can reduce the clicks available to some pages. Google says Overviews rely on its existing Search ranking systems; appearing as a supporting link is not guaranteed. A page can therefore remain eligible—or keep a similar position in conventional results—while receiving fewer visits from a results page that answers the query itself.

Do AI Overviews hurt SEO rankings?

Not automatically. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear as a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link in an AI Overview. Meeting those conditions does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page, or select it for an Overview. Google also says there are no extra technical requirements or special schema for AI features; ordinary SEO fundamentals still apply. Google’s guidance on AI features in Search explains the eligibility distinction.

That distinction matters because ranking and traffic are different outcomes. A site might remain visible in ordinary results but get fewer clicks when an Overview satisfies a searcher’s need before they visit a site. Conversely, inclusion as a supporting link does not guarantee a click.

What Google recommends

  • Allow Google to crawl pages and make them discoverable through internal links.
  • Provide accessible text, useful media, and a good page experience.
  • Keep structured data accurate and consistent with visible page content.
  • Publish distinctive, helpful material. Google does not require an AI-specific writing style or “chunking.”

Google also says Search does not use llms.txt as a special ranking signal. No tactic in this guidance guarantees inclusion or a ranking boost. See Google’s AI features documentation and its guidance on generative AI content.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

They can. The clearest evidence is about clicks and browsing behavior, not a uniform drop in rankings. Studies differ in method, population, period, and what they count as a click, so their results should not be treated as a forecast for every keyword or website.

What Pew observed in U.S. browsing data

Pew Research Center analyzed browsing data from 900 U.S. adults for March 1–31, 2025. Among Google visits with an AI summary, 8% led to a click on a traditional result; the comparable figure for visits without a summary was 15%. A link inside the summary was clicked in 1% of visits where one appeared. These are observed actions in that sample, not a causal estimate for an individual publisher. Pew’s study and methodology provide the study details.

In the same dataset, 18% of 68,879 unique searches had a corresponding results page with an AI summary. Pew also found that 26% of browsing sessions with a summary ended after the results page, compared with 16% without one; “ended” meant the user exited the browser for at least five seconds. Researchers scraped matching results pages April 7–17, after the March browsing period, so these figures describe that study period rather than current prevalence.

What a 2026 field experiment adds

A preregistered U.S. field experiment by Wang, Gleason, Bart, Wilson, and Metaxa reported an 8.8 percentage-point increase in external click-through when AI Overviews were removed. It involved 1,100 participants who searched during the experiment. The authors reported that a Google page change disrupted the browser extension’s hiding logic; the median participant had half of Overviews hidden. This gives causal evidence under the tested conditions, but it does not establish the effect for every query, site, or market. The study paper describes the design and limitation.

The paper also reported an 18.8 percentage-point reduction in click-through for a separate treatment that assigned users to AI Mode-only search. That result concerns AI Mode, not AI Overviews in isolation, and should not be presented as an Overview effect.

Why traffic can fall while rankings look stable

An Overview can change what happens on the results page without necessarily changing a page’s ordinary ranking. If the summary answers an informational query, some searchers may not need to visit a result. The potential exposure is not the same for every query: Pew found question-form and longer, full-sentence searches were more likely to trigger a summary in its March 2025 sample. That is a reason to segment queries, not a guarantee that a particular question will trigger one.

Google’s own account describes a different scope. In August 2025, Google said total organic click volume from Search to websites was “relatively stable year-over-year” and that average click quality had increased. Those are Google’s aggregate claims; its public statement does not provide the query-level information needed to estimate a specific site’s change. A broadly stable aggregate can coexist with losses or gains for individual sites. Google’s statement is not a site-level traffic diagnosis.

How to check whether Overviews are affecting your site

Start with first-party performance data, then test explanations rather than assigning a cause from a ranking snapshot. Google says AI-feature traffic is included in overall Search Console Web performance data. Its Generative AI performance report can help assess discovery through generative AI features; the general Web report does not break all AI-feature clicks out as a separate total.

  1. Compare matched periods in Search Console. In the Performance report, compare equivalent date ranges and segment by query and page. Review clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position; use country and device filters to check whether the pattern is concentrated in a market or device category.
  2. Use the Generative AI performance report. Check it for discovery through Google’s generative AI features, while recognizing that the Web report’s overall totals include AI-feature traffic. Consult Google’s report documentation for its scope and availability.
  3. Build comparable query groups. Where you can reliably observe Overview appearances, compare queries with and without them. Separate branded from non-branded searches and informational from transactional intent; changes in the mix can alter an aggregate even if individual groups behave differently.
  4. Check outcomes in analytics. Pair search visits with conversions and time on site. Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews have been higher quality by its measure of users spending more time on a site, but the sources cited here do not establish a quantified independent conversion effect.
  5. Check other causes before attributing a decline. Review seasonality, changes in demand, technical or indexing issues, site changes, and Google ranking updates. An aggregate study cannot diagnose why one site’s traffic changed.

How to interpret claims about AI search traffic

Before applying a percentage from a study or vendor report to your own site, check what was measured. “Ranking,” impressions, CTR, an external click, a referral session, and a conversion are not interchangeable outcomes.

Evidence What it measures How to use it
Pew, March 2025 U.S. browsing sample Observed clicks and session behavior around Google searches with and without summaries Useful for describing user behavior in that sample; not a site-specific causal forecast.
Google, August 2025 statement Google’s aggregate characterization of organic click volume and click quality Attribute the claim to Google; it does not quantify the effect for a particular site.
Wang et al., 2026 U.S. field experiment Click-through under an Overview-removal treatment, with imperfect treatment delivery Adds causal evidence under tested conditions; do not generalize without qualification.
Wang et al., 2026 AI Mode-only treatment Click-through after assignment to a separate AI Mode-only condition Do not use its 18.8-point result as an estimate for AI Overviews.

Study results can diverge because they use different populations, periods, units of analysis, and methods. Result pages change, query mixes differ, and the field experiment reported imperfect delivery of its Overview-hiding treatment. Third-party SEO tools can provide estimates, but Google says those tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Treat estimates as estimates rather than privileged Google data.
