It does not, by itself, require the country to leave the Commonwealth or change its parliamentary system. The details depend on the country’s constitution and the laws used to make the transition.
First, distinguish a Commonwealth realm from a Commonwealth member
A Commonwealth realm is an independent state that has the British monarch as its head of state. A Commonwealth republic has a different head of state. Those are constitutional categories, not membership categories: a country can become a republic and remain in the Commonwealth.

What changes when the monarch stops being head of state?
The central change is the constitutional office of head of state. The country’s law must provide who holds that office and how it is filled. In many republics that person is a president, but the title alone does not determine whether the president is ceremonial, elected, appointed, or an executive leader.

The transition may also require changes to constitutional wording that refers to the monarch or the Crown. Which other provisions change—such as those concerning oaths, appointments, succession, or courts—depends on the country’s constitution and transition legislation. There is no single package of changes that applies to every country.
A republic does not automatically mean a presidential system
Head of state and head of government are distinct roles in a parliamentary republic: a president can serve as head of state while a prime minister leads the government. Barbados illustrates this arrangement. It became a parliamentary republic on 30 November 2021 and recognized President Sandra Mason as head of state, while retaining its parliamentary system and bicameral Parliament.
Barbados’s Parliament describes a 30-member elected House of Assembly and a 21-member appointed Senate. Those numbers describe Barbados’s institutions, not a standard model for republics. The Parliament’s overview of the Constitution of Parliament states that “Barbados became a parliamentary republic with effect from November 30th, 2021.”
Does becoming a republic mean leaving the Commonwealth?
No. India’s India (Consequential Provision) Act 1949 was enacted in view of India becoming a republic while remaining a Commonwealth member. Barbados likewise remained a Commonwealth member after its 2021 transition, as the House of Commons Library’s account of Barbados becoming a republic explains.

These examples show that republican constitutional status and Commonwealth membership are separate questions. A change to the head of state does not itself settle whether a country remains a member.
How is the change made?
The legal route depends on the country’s own constitutional rules. There is no Commonwealth-wide vote or general requirement for UK permission established by the examples here.
Australia: a referendum route for constitutional alteration
Section 128 of the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act 1900 sets out Australia’s constitutional alteration process: a proposed amendment must pass each House by an absolute majority and then be submitted to voters in each State. This is an Australian procedure, not a universal rule for realms.

Barbados: a parliamentary amendment
Barbados made its transition through a constitutional amendment passed by Parliament. The contrast with Australia shows why the process must be checked country by country rather than inferred from another realm’s experience.

How to compare a realm’s proposed transition
To understand what a particular country would change, look at three questions in its constitution and transition legislation:
Quick Recap
- Who becomes head of state? Check how the office is filled and what powers it has, including its relationship to the prime minister and legislature.
- What legal route is required? Identify any parliamentary thresholds, referendum requirements, or other procedures specified in that country’s constitution.
- What remains continuous? Check separately whether Commonwealth membership, parliamentary government, and existing institutions continue; do not assume they change simply because the head of state does.
