How to Check Which Apps Have Access to Your iPhone Location

See which iPhone apps have location permission, change each app’s access or precision, and check recent activity with App Privacy Report.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To see which apps have requested access to your iPhone’s location, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Tap an app to review or change its permission and, when available, its Precise Location setting. To check recent access, turn on App Privacy Report; it records activity only from the time you enable it.

Review location access app by app

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
  3. Scan the list and tap an app to see its current location permission, Apple’s explanation of why it requests location, and any additional controls available for that app.
  4. If the app offers Precise Location and does not need an exact position, turn it off to share an approximate location instead.

Options vary by iOS version and app. Depending on the app and its needs, you may see choices such as allowing access once, allowing it while using the app, or denying access. An app appears in a privacy permission list after it has asked to use that type of data, so the Location Services list is not necessarily a complete inventory of every installed app. See Apple’s iPhone location-sharing guide and its overview of Location Services privacy.

Check whether an app used location recently

The Location Services screen shows permissions, not a history of access. For recent activity, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report and turn on the report. Apple says it shows how often and when apps accessed privacy-sensitive data or device sensors over the past seven days. It starts collecting only after you enable it, so a new report may not show activity immediately. Apple says report data is encrypted and stored only on your device. Details are in Apple’s App Privacy Report guidance.

Limit precision without removing access

Turning off Precise Location, where the control is available, changes the app’s access from a specific position to an approximate one. It does not revoke location permission; an app may still receive approximate location.

Revoke an app’s location access

In Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, tap the app and choose a permission that denies location access. This is narrower than switching off Location Services for the whole iPhone, and may affect app features that depend on location.

Turn off Location Services for the iPhone

The main Location Services switch applies more broadly than an individual app setting. Apple warns that important iPhone features may stop working if Location Services is off. iPhone location determination can use GPS, Bluetooth, nearby Wi‑Fi networks and cellular-network information; consult Apple’s location-sharing guide before making a device-wide change.

Location access is different from tracking

Location Services permissions and cross-app tracking are separate controls. Reviewing an app’s location permission does not settle whether it can track activity across other companies’ apps and websites. Apple treats tracking separately in its guide to what you share on iPhone.

What the settings screen cannot tell you

A permission setting shows what access iOS grants through Location Services, but it cannot guarantee that every way a device or service might infer location appears in that app list. Apple’s safety guidance notes that emergency location information may still be used in some circumstances. Also, an app or website may handle information it receives under its own terms and privacy policy; Apple advises reviewing those disclosures if you are concerned about downstream use.
