Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart by deciding what you need to predict: tomorrow’s half-hourly electricity import, next week’s daily use, solar export, or a bill under a particular tariff. Then use clean, time-aligned meter readings to test a simple forecast against later actual readings. Smart-meter data can make estimates more useful, but it cannot guarantee a particular level of accuracy or savings.
Choose the forecast that matches your decision
A forecast is only useful when its target, time interval and horizon fit the question you need answered. Half-hourly demand for tomorrow and a monthly bill estimate are different forecasting tasks; a method that works for one should not be assumed to work for the other.

- To plan daily use: forecast household electricity import or gas consumption by day or half-hour.
- To schedule a flexible load: forecast electricity use at the intervals relevant to your tariff, such as tomorrow’s half-hours.
- To estimate a bill: forecast usage, then apply the tariff and other relevant charges for the billing period. A usage forecast alone is not a bill forecast.
- For a home with solar: treat electricity imported from the grid and electricity exported separately when the meter makes both available. A single net figure can hide whether the home is drawing from or sending power to the grid.
Write the target down before choosing a model—for example, “half-hourly electricity imported tomorrow” or “daily gas use for the next seven days.” Also record the forecast horizon, because the information available for a next-day estimate may differ from what is available for a longer-range estimate.

Get the readings and check what they mean
In the UK, you can start with your supplier’s data tools or request process. Other possible routes include an in-home display and a compatible consumer device connected to the meter’s Home Area Network (HAN). The supplier, meter and communications hub affect which routes work and whether data is downloadable or near-real-time. Check with your supplier before relying on a third-party device or service.

UK smart-meter equipment is required to be capable of storing at least 13 months of half-hourly consumption data and at least 24 months of daily consumption data. Smart electricity meters must be capable of storing at least three months of half-hourly export data. The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero sets out these minimum capabilities in its smart-meter guidance; actual interfaces and access methods vary. The same guidance says electricity consumption and tariff data can be made available over the HAN at least every ten seconds. That describes a capability, not a guarantee that every supplier’s app or device presents data in the same way.
Before forecasting, make an audit copy of the readings and note how you obtained them and what permissions you granted. Check each of the following:
- Timestamps and time zone: confirm the interval length and how daylight-saving changes are represented. A clock change can create an unusual interval count or repeated local times.
- Units: distinguish energy (for example, kWh) from power and verify that all rows use the same unit.
- Missing or repeated intervals: identify gaps and duplicates instead of treating them as real zero-use periods or genuine demand.
- Meter changes: mark replacement dates or other changes that could create a break in the series.
- Direction of flow: establish whether a reading is import, export or net flow. Do not assume that a displayed total answers all three questions.
Detailed interval consumption can reveal patterns of household activity. The UK framework gives consumers control over who can access relevant energy-consumption data, how often and for what purposes, subject to regulated purposes; certain detailed access requires explicit consent. Read the supplier’s and any third-party service’s terms to understand what data is collected and why. These access rules are UK-specific, and other countries have different meter interfaces and privacy requirements.

Build a baseline before adding complexity
Plot the readings by date and time of day. Look for missing intervals, unusual spikes and recurring patterns such as higher use in the morning or on particular weekdays. A simple baseline gives you something meaningful to beat and can expose data problems before a more complicated model hides them.
Useful starting comparisons include:
- the most recent comparable interval or day;
- the previous day, where day-to-day use is a sensible comparison;
- the corresponding weekday in a recent week; or
- a recent average for the same time of day or season.
These are reference forecasts, not claims that household routines repeat exactly. Choose a baseline that fits the target and horizon. A previous-day comparison may be reasonable for some next-day questions, while a same-weekday comparison may better reflect a weekly routine.
Add context only when it will be available at forecast time
Past meter readings are the starting point, but demand may also respond to conditions outside the meter series. Weather is a relevant candidate input, particularly where heating or cooling makes consumption temperature-sensitive. Calendar patterns can help represent weekdays, weekends or holidays. Tariff periods matter when the forecast supports a cost or scheduling decision.

Use only information that would actually be available when issuing the forecast. For a real next-day prediction, for example, do not use the weather that happened tomorrow; use a weather forecast available at the time. That makes the test closer to how the model would operate in practice. Add features one at a time where possible, so you can see whether they improve predictions rather than merely making the model more elaborate.

Keep time order intact. Use an earlier portion of the history to fit a model and a later portion to validate it. If practical, repeat the exercise at several forecast starting dates, always predicting a period later than the data used to fit the model. Randomly shuffling intervals can let information from the future leak into training and produce an unrealistically flattering evaluation.
A 2024 IEECP technical report on household interventions discusses preprocessing, chronological training and validation, relevant covariates such as weather, and comparison of methods on the particular dataset. It reviews approaches including linear regression, ARIMA-family methods, Prophet and neural methods. A Cambridge thesis review also describes why household demand is challenging to predict: individual appliances switch on and off, making a single home more variable than aggregated demand. Neither source establishes one model as best for every household or a general accuracy percentage that can be promised.

| Approach | What it can offer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Simple historical baseline | A transparent reference using recent or comparable readings. | Whether the chosen comparison period resembles the forecast period; it is a benchmark, not a guarantee. |
| Linear regression or ARIMA-family method | Established statistical approaches discussed in the 2024 IEECP report. | Whether the model captures the patterns in this home’s data and improves on the baseline on later readings. |
| Prophet or neural method | More model options discussed in the same report. | Whether extra complexity helps on the same chronological holdout; complexity alone is not evidence of better forecasts. |
Compare each candidate using the same target, intervals, forecast horizon and validation dates. Average absolute error can be explained as the typical size of the miss in the energy unit being forecast. Percentage error may be misleading when actual use is close to zero. If you report a metric, identify the evaluation period, interval, horizon and baseline alongside it; the cited reviews do not prescribe one universal household metric.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Turn a forecast into a decision and learn from misses
Use the forecast for the decision it was built to support: prepare for likely demand, estimate a bill using the applicable tariff, or choose a time for a flexible load. UK government guidance says basic demand shifting does not require specialist equipment; examples include changing when a washing machine runs or an electric vehicle charges. Whether shifting is worthwhile depends on the actual tariff terms and what the household can move.

After the forecast period, compare predicted and actual readings. Note events that explain unusual misses, such as guests, a holiday, a new appliance, a heat pump installation or a change in occupancy. Revisit the data and model when the household changes rather than assuming an old pattern will continue indefinitely.

Smart meters can support time-of-use tariffs and demand shifting, but meter ownership by itself does not guarantee savings. UK government guidance cites around £1 billion in consumer benefits from shifting demand from peak to off-peak times; that is a system-level estimate, not a typical saving for one household. Ofgem has separately cited estimated consumer-bill savings of £1.6 billion–£4.5 billion by 2045 from using half-hourly data to improve system efficiency. That range is also a system-level estimate, not an individual home’s forecast or promised bill reduction.
What a useful home forecast can—and cannot—tell you
A useful forecast is a tested estimate for a stated target and horizon. Its value is that it can help you plan, compare scenarios or schedule demand with more information than guesswork alone. Its reliability must be judged against actual readings from later periods in the same home; no single accuracy figure applies to every household, season or forecasting task.
