Ahmedabad-based industrial marketplace Pneucons plans to stop accepting UPI payments on orders from October 10, 2026, according to a report by Mint attributing the decision to co-founder Pritesh Lakhani. The reported reason is the cost of merchant discount rate (MDR) on larger transactions. Mint’s headline quotes Lakhani saying, “MDR ate 94% of our margins.” That figure describes a specific illustrative comparison—not 94% of every order or of Pneucons’ overall profits.
What Pneucons is reported to be changing
Mint reported on October 4, 2026, that Pneucons planned to stop accepting UPI payments on orders starting October 10. The report attributes the plan to co-founder Pritesh Lakhani. No primary announcement from Pneucons or independent confirmation that the change has been implemented was established, so the decision should be described as a reported plan.

The report says Lakhani’s concern is a 0.4% MDR applied to the full customer payment on qualifying transactions. That fee can be significant for a marketplace if its commission is a small share of the order value. The available reporting does not establish what other payment methods Pneucons will offer or whether its customers will still be able to use UPI through another route.
What the “94%” figure means
Mint’s example uses a pre-tax order value of ₹10,000 and 18% GST. The customer pays ₹11,800. At a 0.5% pre-tax commission, Pneucons would receive ₹50; 0.4% of the full ₹11,800 payment is ₹47.20. The MDR is therefore 94.4% of that illustrative ₹50 commission, leaving ₹2.80 before the article’s further discussion of GST on MDR.

These are the inputs and arithmetic in Mint’s illustration, not verified figures for Pneucons’ actual order mix, costs or margins. The 94% comparison is neither the MDR rate nor a claim that the company loses 94% of every order or of its total profit.
What India’s stated UPI MDR framework says
A Ministry of Finance release dated September 15, 2026, describes MDR terms for specified person-to-merchant (P2M) UPI transactions. The headline 0.4% rate is not universal: it applies to specified P2M transactions above ₹2,000, with a cap of ₹300 for transactions of ₹75,000 and above. The merchant category matters, so a rate should not be applied to a particular business without confirming its classification.

The Ministry says MDR is borne within the merchant payment ecosystem and that banks have been advised to ensure merchants do not pass the charge on to customers. It also estimates that approximately 96% of merchant transactions will remain unaffected; that is an economy-wide Ministry estimate, not data about Pneucons’ orders.

Why the order calculation does not settle the full business question
The example compares a fee on the customer’s tax-inclusive payment with a commission calculated on the pre-tax order value. That difference in fee bases is central to the result. It does not, by itself, show the company’s net profit, the cost of handling each order, or whether a different payment method would cost less overall.

To assess the impact on a particular merchant, the relevant details include transaction eligibility and merchant category, the MDR rate and cap, the amount on which the fee is calculated, the merchant’s commission or gross margin, and the total processing cost of alternatives. The Mint report does not establish Pneucons’ actual transaction mix or its alternative payment arrangements.

What customers and merchants can take from the report
