Use the PS5’s own video-output screen as the first check, then confirm the exact TV model, HDMI input and cable path. On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to inspect the connected HDMI device and current signal. For a valid test, connect the console directly to the TV’s designated high-bandwidth input, use the included PS5 cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for 4K/120Hz, enable VRR and 120 Hz Output, and set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p.
Do not treat “4K TV,” “120Hz panel” or “HDMI 2.1” as proof by itself. A television can accept 4K at 60Hz but not 4K at 120Hz; VRR is a separate feature; and a set may support these functions on only one or two HDMI inputs. The exact model manual and the result shown by the PS5 together provide the reliable answer.

120Hz input
120Hz is the refresh rate the TV accepts from the PS5. It is not the same as a television’s advertised panel refresh number. Some sets use processing terms such as “motion rate” or “effective refresh rate”; those labels do not confirm that an HDMI input accepts a native 4K/120Hz signal.
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
VRR lets the display synchronize its refresh timing with the PS5’s changing frame rate. It is a compatibility feature separate from resolution and refresh rate. A TV may accept 4K/120Hz but lack VRR, or support VRR with restrictions that vary by input, picture mode or supported range. The game must also support or benefit from VRR for the effect to be visible.
Check the exact TV model before changing settings
Find the full model number on the TV’s information screen, rear label or original documentation. Regional variants can have different inputs and specifications, so do not rely on a product family name alone.
Recommended Free Tools
In the manufacturer’s specifications or manual, look for all of these statements for the exact model:
- 4K input at 120Hz, not merely a 120Hz panel or motion-processing claim.
- VRR support, preferably with the supported refresh-rate range.
- The specific HDMI input or inputs that accept 4K/120Hz.
- Any requirement to enable an enhanced, high-bandwidth, gaming or HDMI format mode.
- Whether HDR and the desired color format remain available at 4K/120Hz.
Port capability is model-specific. The label “HDMI 2.1” is useful but not a complete test: manufacturers can implement different subsets of HDMI features, and a TV may have a mixture of higher- and lower-bandwidth ports. The manual should identify the input intended for 4K/120Hz gaming.
Prepare a clean connection for the test
Test the PS5 with the shortest, simplest signal path first. An intermediate receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, splitter or capture device can limit bandwidth even when both the TV and console support the desired mode.
- Turn off the PS5 and TV.
- Disconnect any receiver, soundbar, switch, splitter or capture device from the video path.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV’s documented 4K/120Hz HDMI input.
- Use the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5, or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable explicitly rated for 4K/120Hz.
- Turn on the TV and select the input to which the PS5 is connected.
A suitable cable removes one possible bottleneck; it cannot make an unsupported TV input deliver 4K/120Hz or VRR. If the direct test works but the normal receiver or soundbar path does not, the intermediate device or its settings is the limiting component.

Use the PS5 video-output screen
On the console, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony’s PS5 guidance says this area can display information about the connected HDMI device, including resolution, VRR and HDR information. The PS5 also detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically.
Record what the console reports while it is connected directly to the TV. The wording and arrangement can vary slightly with system software, but the important evidence is the negotiated output and whether VRR is recognized.
Recommended test settings
| PS5 setting | Value for the initial test | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Automatic or 2160p | Requests the TV’s highest compatible resolution without forcing an unsupported mode. |
| 120 Hz Output | Automatic or enabled, depending on the displayed label | Allows compatible games and displays to use 120Hz. |
| VRR | Enabled | Allows synchronization on a compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR display. |
| Video Transfer Rate | Auto | Leaves the normal signal selection to the console; lower values are troubleshooting options. |
Leave the video-transfer setting on Auto for the normal check. Changing it can be useful only when diagnosing a difficult signal, and it should not be used to claim that a TV supports a mode it cannot sustain.
Interpret what the PS5 reports
| PS5 result | What it establishes | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| 4K at 120Hz | The current TV input, cable path, console settings and display are negotiating a 4K/120Hz signal together. | Check VRR separately and test a compatible game. |
| 4K at 60Hz | 4K is working, but the current setup is not negotiating 120Hz. | Verify the port specification, TV-side enhanced mode, cable, firmware and game support. |
| 1080p at 120Hz | The setup can reach 120Hz, but not at 4K in its current configuration. | Follow the 1080p/120Hz troubleshooting sequence below. |
| No picture when 4K/120Hz is selected | The signal path is failing at that mode; it does not by itself prove that the TV lacks the feature. | Return to a visible mode, then check port, cable, direct connection, firmware and TV settings. |
| VRR unavailable or not recognized | The console is not confirming VRR for the current display path. | Confirm TV and port support, enable VRR on both devices where required, and test a compatible game. |
The result applies to the connection you tested. Moving the cable to another HDMI input, adding an AV receiver or changing a TV picture mode can change the negotiated capabilities.

A specification sheet tells you what a model is designed to accept; the PS5 screen tells you what the complete connection is negotiating at that moment. That distinction matters because a capable TV can still report a lower mode when the cable is unsuitable, an intermediate device is in the path, an enhanced-input option is disabled or the console is connected to a lower-bandwidth socket.
Conversely, a successful 4K/120Hz handshake does not automatically prove that every HDMI input on the TV has the same capability. It proves the selected port, cable, console and display are working together. Keep the cable in that documented input when you reconnect other equipment, and retest if you change any part of the chain.
Verify VRR with a compatible game
After the TV is recognized as VRR-capable, start a game that supports or benefits from VRR. VRR is not a permanent “120 frames per second” switch: it synchronizes the display to the frame rate the game is actually producing. A title that is locked to 60 frames per second, does not implement VRR or shows little frame-rate variation may not produce an obvious visual difference.

Sony describes PS5 VRR as working with compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR TVs and PC monitors and notes that results vary by TV and game. Therefore, a TV can pass the console’s VRR check even when a particular game does not visibly demonstrate smoother motion.

The PS5 shows 4K at 60Hz instead of 120Hz
- Confirm that the cable is connected to the TV input identified for 4K/120Hz, not just any HDMI socket.
- Open the TV’s input or external-device settings and enable the manufacturer’s enhanced, high-bandwidth or gaming format option if the manual requires one.
- Check that the exact model specification says the selected input accepts 4K at 120Hz.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV and remove receivers, soundbars, switches and capture devices temporarily.
- Use the included PS5 cable or a certified Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for 4K/120Hz.
- Update the TV firmware and restart both the TV and PS5.
- Set PS5 Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, 120 Hz Output to enabled or automatic, and Video Transfer Rate to Auto.
- Check the game’s own video settings. Some games offer a 120Hz mode that must be selected before the console outputs at that rate.
If every input and setting has been checked and the manual lists only 4K/60Hz for that model, the TV does not support 4K/120Hz even if its panel or marketing material mentions 120Hz.
The PS5 shows 1080p at 120Hz
This indicates that 120Hz is being reached, but the 4K portion of the signal is not. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out this symptom.
- Confirm that the TV claims 4K/120Hz input on the selected port.
- Move the cable to the documented HDMI 2.1 or high-bandwidth input.
- Enable the TV’s required enhanced-format setting.
- Update the TV firmware.
- Connect the PS5 directly, bypassing every intermediate HDMI device.
- Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate to Auto.
- Try the included cable or another Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable.
Do not interpret 1080p/120Hz as proof that the TV supports 4K/120Hz. It proves only that the present path can negotiate a lower-resolution 120Hz signal.
There is no picture at 4K/120Hz
First restore a visible output by reconnecting at a mode the TV accepts or by allowing the PS5 to select its automatic output. Then check the same items as above: the correct HDMI input, a direct connection, the cable rating, TV-side enhanced mode and current firmware. Try another appropriate HDMI input if the manual lists more than one. Some displays also require a full power cycle after changing their HDMI format mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVRR is missing or appears inactive
- Confirm VRR support for the exact TV model and the exact HDMI input.
- Enable VRR in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output on the PS5.
- Enable any TV-side gaming or VRR option required by its manual.
- Use the direct connection and a suitable high-speed cable while testing.
- Update the TV and PS5 software.
- Test with a game that supports or benefits from VRR; a non-compatible title may show no obvious effect.
VRR performance can vary by TV and game. The absence of a visible change in one title is not enough to conclude that the television lacks VRR when the PS5 recognizes the feature.
Check the TV’s own HDMI and gaming settings
Manufacturers use different names for the mode that unlocks full HDMI bandwidth. Common examples include an enhanced HDMI format, input signal plus, deep color, game mode or a 4K/120 option. Use the model-specific manual rather than enabling settings at random.

Also check whether enabling a high-bandwidth mode changes other features. Some TVs limit certain picture-processing options, color formats or HDR combinations at 4K/120Hz. The important test is not just whether an image appears, but whether the TV maintains the HDR and color features you intend to use at the negotiated signal.
After changing a TV input mode or installing firmware, repeat the direct PS5 test. A previously stored handshake can persist until both devices are restarted.
Separate console output from game output
The PS5 may be capable of negotiating 4K/120Hz while a particular game remains at 60 frames per second. Conversely, a game may offer a 120Hz performance option that must be selected in its own menus. Check the game’s video settings after the console and TV pass the output test, and do not use one title’s behavior as the only evidence about the TV.
VRR likewise follows the frame rate being produced. It can smooth changes within the display’s supported range, but it cannot create frames the game does not render. This is why the PS5’s VRR status and a compatible game test answer different questions: the first checks the connection, while the second checks practical behavior.
Compare TVs using the specifications that matter
If you are choosing between models, record the following for each exact model and input rather than comparing only panel marketing terms.
| Comparison point | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| 4K/120Hz input | Does a named HDMI input accept 4K at 120Hz from a PS5? |
| VRR | Is VRR supported, and is a supported range published? |
| Input settings | Must an enhanced, gaming or high-bandwidth mode be enabled? |
| HDR and color | Are the desired HDR and color features retained at 4K/120Hz? |
| Real-world negotiation | Does a direct PS5 connection with a suitable cable report the expected signal? |
If a specification does not state a value, treat it as unconfirmed rather than assuming that another model in the same product family behaves identically.

A final verification checklist
- You identified the TV’s complete model number and checked its manual.
- The manual names the HDMI input used for 4K/120Hz.
- The model separately lists VRR support.
- The PS5 is connected directly to that input.
- The cable is the one supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable rated for 4K/120Hz.
- PS5 Resolution is Automatic or 2160p.
- 120 Hz Output and VRR are enabled.
- Video Transfer Rate is Auto for the normal test.
- The PS5 video-output screen reports 4K at 120Hz.
- A compatible game has been used to assess VRR behavior.
When all of these checks pass, you have verified the capability of the complete PS5-to-TV setup, not merely a claim on a box. If one fails, the failed component is usually identifiable by testing the port, cable, TV setting and intermediate devices one at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my TV supports 4K at 120Hz on PS5?
Check the exact model manual for 4K input at 120Hz and the named HDMI port, then connect the PS5 directly with the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, confirm that the negotiated signal is 4K at 120Hz.
Does my TV need HDMI 2.1 for PS5 4K/120Hz?
The TV needs an input capable of accepting the required 4K/120Hz signal. HDMI 2.1 labeling can help identify that input, but the label alone is not sufficient; verify the exact port and feature list in the model’s documentation.
Which HDMI port should I use for PS5 120Hz?
Use the input the manufacturer identifies for HDMI 2.1, 4K/120Hz or the applicable high-bandwidth gaming mode. Do not assume every HDMI socket on the same TV has identical capabilities.
Why does my PS5 say 4K 60Hz instead of 120Hz?
The selected port may be limited to 60Hz, an enhanced-input option may be disabled, the cable path may include a receiver or switch, the cable may be limiting bandwidth, firmware may be outdated, or the game may not be using its 120Hz mode. Test directly with the correct port and set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate to Auto.
Why is my PS5 only showing 1080p at 120Hz?
The connection is reaching 120Hz but not 4K. Check the TV’s 4K/120Hz claim for that input, move to the documented high-bandwidth port, enable the required TV format, update firmware, bypass intermediate devices and retry with a suitable cable.
How can I check if my TV has VRR?
Confirm VRR support for the exact model and HDMI input in the manual, enable VRR on the PS5 and on the TV if required, then inspect the PS5 video-output information. A compatible game is needed to judge visible behavior.
Will VRR be obvious in every PS5 game?
No. VRR follows the game’s changing frame rate, and results vary by TV and game. A title that does not support or benefit from VRR may show little or no visible difference even when the TV and PS5 connection are compatible.
Can a new HDMI cable fix an unsupported TV?
No. The included PS5 cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable removes a possible cable bottleneck, but it cannot add 4K/120Hz or VRR capability to a TV input that does not support those features.
Does 4K/120Hz automatically mean HDR and every picture feature remain available?
Not necessarily. Check the model documentation and test the negotiated signal to see whether the HDR and color features you want remain available at 4K/120Hz. Some TVs change processing or format options in high-bandwidth modes.
The Bottom Line
The dependable method is to verify three separate things: the exact TV model and HDMI input claim 4K/120Hz and VRR, the PS5 is connected directly with a suitable cable, and the PS5 video-output screen reports the expected signal. Then test VRR in a compatible game. A 4K/60Hz or 1080p/120Hz result identifies a configuration or capability gap to investigate; it is not proof until the port, settings, cable, firmware and game support have been checked.
