The decisive check is the game’s official PlayStation Store or publisher listing: it must show PS5 as a supported platform. Before buying, also verify the release date and edition, confirm that your console software is current, free enough SSD space, and check whether the purchase is digital or disc-based. A PS5 Digital Edition can run PS5 games, but it cannot read game discs. PS4 backward compatibility is a separate question and does not establish that a new PS5-exclusive title will work.
What “can run” means on PS5
Compatibility has several parts that are easy to confuse. A game can be announced for the PS5 platform yet still be unavailable to play because its release date has not arrived, the selected edition is different, the console lacks a disc drive, or there is not enough free storage to install it. Check each condition independently rather than relying on a trailer, a retailer category or a social-media post.

- Platform support: the official listing identifies PS5, PS4, both, or another platform.
- Release status: the title may be announced, available for pre-order, or released. An announced PS5 game is not playable until its stated release date and any required download access.
- Purchase format: the edition may be digital, physical Blu-ray, or offered in both formats.
- Console hardware: a standard PS5 with a compatible disc drive can use supported game discs; a PS5 Digital Edition cannot use discs.
- Installation conditions: current system software and sufficient free SSD capacity are practical requirements.
The official game page is therefore the source of truth for the particular title and edition you intend to buy. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 guidance directs players to official publisher or game websites for edition and physical-release details, because those details vary by title.

Use the PlayStation Store or publisher page
Start with the exact game’s official PlayStation Store page or the publisher’s own game page. Sony’s PS5 catalogue includes a Coming soon section, and individual listings identify the supported platform and release information. Search by the complete title, including subtitles, because similarly named projects can have different platform plans.

- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 8TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Do not treat a retailer’s “PS5” filter, a launch trailer, a forum comment or an old announcement as final evidence. Those sources may retain an outdated date or omit an edition change. The official listing closest to your purchase or launch date is the most useful snapshot.
Confirm that it is the same edition
Open the product page for the edition you expect to buy. A standard edition, deluxe edition and bundle can have different release dates, included content and formats. If a search result leads to a bundle or upgrade rather than the base game, its platform label may not answer your question.
Step 2: Read the platform label correctly
The listing’s platform field is the first and most important compatibility signal. Use the label, not the console’s ability to run older software, to decide whether an upcoming exclusive is supported.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Official platform label | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | The listed version is made for PS5. | That it is already released, that a disc edition exists, or that your SSD has enough free space. |
| PS4 and PS5 | The title has versions for both generations; choose the PS5 version when available for your console. | That the PS4 version has the same features, performance or upgrade terms. |
| PS4 only | The listed software is for PS4. | That an unlisted PS5 version will appear later. |
| Only a non-console platform | The page you opened does not establish PS5 support. | That a separate PS5 edition will launch. |
If the listing says only PS5, treat the game as PS5-only unless the publisher changes the listing. If PS4 is also displayed, the game has a PS4 version as well. Platform plans for unreleased titles can change, so record what the official page says when you buy rather than assuming an old announcement still applies.
Step 3: Check release date and availability status
Distinguish announced from playable
An upcoming exclusive may be announced without being available. Read the date and the status shown on the official page. A pre-order page, a “coming soon” entry and a released product are different states:
- Announced or coming soon: PS5 support may be confirmed, but the game cannot be played before its launch date.
- Pre-order: the page may sell access in advance while still showing a future release date. Verify which edition is being pre-ordered.
- Released: the product should be downloadable or shippable, subject to regional availability and any stated access conditions.
Dates can be revised. Check the listing again near launch, especially if the page was created months before release. Use the date and edition shown for your region; a release date in another market does not guarantee simultaneous access where you live.

Watch for edition-specific timing
Some listings separate a standard release from an edition that grants early access or includes a different package. The platform label can be the same while the playable date and included content differ. Read the edition description before deciding that your purchase will unlock on the date mentioned in a trailer or news article.
Step 4: Match the purchase format to your PS5
Digital Edition consoles
A PS5 Digital Edition can run digital PS5 games, but it cannot read game discs. For this console, select a digital listing or redeem a digital code through an authorized seller. Buying a Blu-ray copy does not become compatible through a software update; the console needs a compatible disc drive to read it.
Consoles with a disc drive
A PS5 model with a compatible disc drive can use a supported physical PS5 game disc, provided the disc edition is sold for your region and the game’s listing identifies PS5 support. Physical and digital versions can differ in bonuses, required downloads or included editions, so inspect the product description rather than assuming they are identical.
When there is no physical edition
Sony notes that some games have both physical Blu-ray and digital editions while others do not. If the publisher lists only a digital product, a disc-drive PS5 does not create a physical option. Buy the format that the official listing actually offers.
| Console and purchase | Result |
|---|---|
| PS5 with disc drive + digital PS5 edition | Compatible, subject to release, software and storage requirements. |
| PS5 with disc drive + supported PS5 Blu-ray | Compatible when the physical edition is officially offered and the disc matches the console’s region requirements. |
| PS5 Digital Edition + digital PS5 edition | Compatible, subject to release, software and storage requirements. |
| PS5 Digital Edition + PS5 Blu-ray | Not playable because the console cannot read game discs. |
Step 5: Verify your console software is current
Sony’s support guidance recommends keeping PS5 system software up to date. Before installing a newly released game, connect the console to the internet and use the system-software update option in Settings. Allow the update to finish and restart if the console requests it, then return to the game page or your library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
An update does not turn a PS4-only product into a PS5 game and does not add a disc drive to a Digital Edition. Its purpose is to keep the console on the software version required for current features and installations. If an installation reports that the system must be updated, complete that update before troubleshooting the game itself.

Step 6: Check free storage before launch
Why the free-space figure matters
Confirm that the internal SSD has enough free capacity for the title and its installation process. The space needed can include the downloaded game, updates and temporary installation data. The number shown on the product page or download screen is the relevant figure for that edition; do not rely on the size of a trailer, a review or a different platform’s version.
Using an M.2 SSD expansion
Sony says a compatible M.2 SSD can store, download and play PS5 games. The drive must meet Sony’s minimum performance and size requirements, so check the current PlayStation hardware guidance for the exact specification before purchasing or installing one. A drive that merely fits physically is not automatically suitable for PS5 game play.
If the console reports insufficient space, remove or move games you no longer use, delete unneeded captures, or install the title on a correctly installed compatible M.2 SSD. Keep the game’s listing and the console’s storage screen open when deciding how much space to free; the required capacity can change with patches.

PS5 backward compatibility answers whether an existing PS4 product can run on PS5. It does not prove that a future PS5-exclusive game has a PS4 version or that a PS4 copy will exist.
Sony’s current support guidance says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5, while some titles are marked Playable on: PS4 only. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced in 2020 that compatibility was being evaluated title by title. Hideaki Nishino wrote on the PlayStation Blog on March 18, 2020: “With more than 4000 games published on PS4, we will continue the testing process and expand backwards compatibility coverage over time.”
Use the PS4 compatibility information only when you are checking an older PS4 purchase. For an upcoming exclusive, return to the new game’s own platform label. A PS5-only listing remains PS5-only even though the console runs many PS4 games.

A complete pre-purchase checklist
- Open the exact title on the official PlayStation Store or publisher website.
- Confirm that the product page lists PS5 as a supported platform.
- Check whether PS4 is also listed, if you need a cross-generation version.
- Read the release date and confirm that the status matches your plan: announced, pre-order or released.
- Select the intended edition and read its included content and release timing.
- Identify whether that edition is digital, physical, or offered in both formats.
- If you own a Digital Edition PS5, exclude disc-only purchases.
- Update the PS5 system software before launch or installation.
- Check free internal SSD space and the title’s stated installation requirement.
- If using expansion, verify that the M.2 SSD meets Sony’s performance and size requirements.
- Recheck the official page near purchase or release because dates, editions and platform plans can change.
Fast decision guide for common situations
The page says PS5 and PS4
You can choose a PS5 version for your console. Compare the editions and formats before buying, because the presence of a PS4 version does not tell you whether a particular bundle contains both versions or whether an upgrade is included.
Recommended Free Tools
The page says only PS5
Plan on the PS5 version only. Confirm its release date, choose a digital or physical format that matches your console, and do not use PS4 backward compatibility as evidence that a PS4 copy exists.
You have a Digital Edition and found a disc pre-order
Do not buy the disc edition for that console. Look for the official digital edition or a digital code for the same PS5 product. If no digital edition is listed, wait for the publisher’s format information rather than assuming the disc will work.
The game is listed as coming soon but has no firm date
PS5 support may be confirmed while availability remains unsettled. Save the official page and check it again near launch. Do not infer a date from a retailer, an older interview or a separate region’s listing.
The download will not install
Check the three practical prerequisites in order: free SSD capacity, current system software and the edition you purchased. If the console has a Digital Edition, verify that the product is digital. If storage is the issue, free space or use a compatible M.2 SSD that meets Sony’s requirements.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing “PS5 compatible” with “available now”: platform support and release status are separate fields.
- Buying the wrong format: a physical Blu-ray cannot be used by a Digital Edition console.
- Assuming every edition includes every platform: read the selected product’s platform and contents, not just the franchise name.
- Using backward compatibility as a shortcut: thousands of PS4 games work on PS5, but that does not create a PS4 version of a new exclusive.
- Ignoring storage: a compatible platform label cannot overcome an installation that lacks free SSD space.
- Relying on an old announcement: recheck the official listing close to purchase because dates and platform plans are changeable.
What to record before you buy
For a reliable final check, note the exact product name, platform label, edition, release date, format and price shown on the official page at the time of purchase. Also note whether you are buying for a standard PS5 with a disc drive or a Digital Edition. This small record prevents a common error: comparing a digital PS5 listing with a physical PS4 listing and assuming they are the same product.

If all six checks agree—PS5 is listed, the release date has arrived, the edition is correct, the format matches your console, system software is current and storage is available—the title meets the practical conditions for running on your PS5. If any one fails, resolve that specific issue rather than replacing the console or assuming the game is defective.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every PS5 run PS5-exclusive games, including the Digital Edition?
Both are PS5 platforms, so a Digital Edition can run a supported digital PS5 game. Its limitation is physical media: it cannot read a game disc.
If a game works on PS4, will its future sequel automatically work on PS5?
No. Check the sequel’s own official listing. PS4 backward compatibility concerns existing PS4 software and does not establish platform support for a new title.
Can a system update make a PS4-only listing run as a native PS5 game?
No. Updating keeps the console software current but does not create an unannounced PS5 edition or change a PS4-only product into a PS5 release.
What should I do if the official page changes after I pre-order?
Recheck the current platform label, edition, format and release date on the official Store or publisher page. Those details can change before launch, so use the latest listing when confirming what your purchase includes.
