Start with the retailer’s official breach notice, reached through its website or app—not a link in an unexpected email or text. Confirm what information was involved and whether the company says your account was affected. You can also search your email address with Have I Been Pwned, but its results cover only breach records loaded into that service; a result either way does not confirm the full scope of a specific retailer incident.
1. Check the retailer’s official notice

Open the retailer’s website or app using a saved bookmark or by typing its address yourself. Look for a breach notice, security update, or customer-support contact.

Read the notice for the incident date, the types of information involved, whether the company says your account was affected, how it will contact customers, and any remediation it offers. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises businesses to explain what information was involved in a breach; its consumer guidance directs readers to affected companies for incident-specific details (FTC breach-response guide; FTC consumer alert).

If the notice does not answer whether your account was affected, contact the retailer using a support channel found independently on its official site or app. Ask what data was involved and what steps it recommends for your account.

2. Treat breach messages as unverified until you check
A message using a retailer’s name, logo, or a convincing caller ID is not proof it came from the company. Do not use links or phone numbers in an unexpected breach email or text to submit credentials or personal details. Instead, find the company’s contact information independently and use a number you know is correct, as the FTC recommends in its phishing guidance.
3. Use an email breach lookup as a second check
Have I Been Pwned lets you search whether an email address appears in the breach records loaded into its service (Have I Been Pwned). A match can point you to a breach worth investigating. A no-match result means only that the address was not found in the records available there. It cannot establish that the retailer’s incident is included in the service or rule out exposure of other identifiers, such as a card number or Social Security number. Do not enter your password into an unverified breach checker.
Use the retailer’s notice or independently verified support channel to confirm the retailer-specific incident. The email lookup is a separate, supplementary check, not a complete inventory of your data.

4. Match your next steps to the information exposed
If an account password or security answer was exposed

Change the affected password, plus any reused or similar passwords on other accounts. Use a unique password for each account.

Change exposed security-question answers where applicable, and turn on multifactor authentication if the service offers it. The FTC’s personal-information protection guidance explains these account-security steps.
If payment-card information was exposed

Contact your bank or card issuer using a known, official channel. Review recent transactions and ask whether a replacement card number is appropriate.

If your Social Security number or other sensitive identity information was exposed

Review your credit reports for accounts you do not recognize. The FTC recommends ordering free credit reports after an SSN exposure (FTC: What To Do After a Data Breach).

Consider placing a credit freeze or fraud alert. FTC breach guidance discusses these options for sensitive identity information (FTC breach-response guide).
5. Get official help if you find misuse
If you see signs that someone has used your information, report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC provides a personalized recovery plan there and directs people affected by data breaches to IdentityTheft.gov/databreach for steps based on the information exposed.

6. Watch for follow-on phishing
Scammers may use a retailer’s name after a public breach to try to obtain account logins or payment details. Treat unexpected requests for passwords or personal information with caution, and verify any claimed request through the retailer’s independently found official channel. The FTC specifically warns consumers to watch for phishing after breaches (FTC consumer alert).

An email lookup can show whether an address appears in that service’s loaded breach records, but it cannot prove that a particular retailer incident did or did not affect you.

The right response depends on the exposed data: secure affected credentials, contact the card issuer about payment details, or review credit and identity protections if sensitive identity information was involved.
This guidance is U.S.-oriented because it relies on FTC and IdentityTheft.gov resources. Breach-notification rights and processes differ by jurisdiction, and retailer notices and breach-database records can change.
