There is no single best Z Ability or Equipment set for every Dragon Ball Legends team. Choose your battle mode and intended fighters first, then match Z Ability targets to the party and select eligible Equipment for each character. The game’s live menus are the final authority: character abilities, item eligibility, and mode rules can change.
Build for the mode and the characters you will use
Start by deciding which battle mode you are building for and which characters you expect to deploy. A party that works in one mode may not follow the same rules in another. In standard party modes, consider both your three battle members and the support characters whose abilities can strengthen them.

Do not choose an ability or item just because it is popular or has a high displayed rank. First establish what your team needs and which rules apply in the mode you are entering.
How to choose Z Abilities
Read the target text, not just the character name
A Z Ability helps only the characters that meet its stated targets and conditions. Check the Tags and any other restrictions in the ability text; do not assume that an ability benefits the whole party unless its wording says so. Count support characters’ abilities
Ordinary Z Abilities apply to relevant party members even when the character providing the ability is not deployed. That lets a support character contribute an ability while your selected battle members fight. Check the party formation screen to confirm which abilities are applying. Compare the actual effect at the character’s current Limit Break
Some Z Abilities become stronger at specified Limit Break thresholds, including ★3, ★6, and ★7 or higher. Compare the effect currently shown for each character rather than treating two abilities as equivalent based only on their names or targets. Dragon Ball Legends Characters Help.

Check Leader Bonus and mode rules
In regular modes and Super Space-Time Rush, a participating Leader receives the other party members’ Z Ability effects, and the party members receive the Leader’s effects. Co-op/Raid, Tournament of Power, and Guild Battle do not have a Leader slot, according to the game’s party help. Confirm the rules for the mode you are playing before relying on a Leader Bonus. Do not treat every ability system as an ordinary Z Ability
Zenkai Abilities, ULTRA abilities, Assault Z Abilities, and Support Z Abilities can have distinct activation conditions or affected characters. Read the character details and the mode’s help rather than assuming they apply to the same members in the same way. How to choose Equipment for each character
Check eligibility before comparing effects
Inspect an Equipment item’s conditions before investing in it. Requirements can include a character’s element, Tags, or Limit Break, and awakened Equipment may impose stricter conditions. The game also notes that Equipment use can be restricted in some modes, so verify eligibility for the mode and wearer you have in mind. Match effects to the wearer
Equipment effects apply to the character wearing the item, not to the team as a whole. Choose effects that fit that character’s role and needs, then check that the character meets every equip condition. Each party character can equip up to three different Equipment items. Compare slot values and effects, not rank alone
Slot colors indicate relative ability strength, while an Equipment rank reflects the combined strength of its slot abilities. The game recommends judging an item after upgrading because its strength is best revealed at maximum upgrade. Platinum Equipment has fixed values and cannot be upgraded. Weigh awakening against cost and restrictions
Awakened Equipment may have stronger abilities, but that does not automatically make it the better choice for every character or mode. Compare its effects and conditions with the item you already have, and check the materials and restrictions before spending resources. About Equipment.

Use recommendations and in-game tools carefully
Understand what Recommended Equipment means
In-game recommended Equipment is based on items used by players at high Battle Rank when relevant Rating Match data is available. For characters with little Rating Match use, the game instead displays all Equipment that character can use. Recommended Allies follows a similar usage-based approach and fallback. Check abilities and party application
- In the party-building screen, filter characters by Tag to find candidates for your intended team.
- Open a character’s details and inspect the Ability tab to read the actual targets and effect.
- Return to party formation and check whether the expected abilities are applying.

Use the Equipment Archive to check an item
Review an item’s abilities, equip conditions, and acquisition information in the Equipment Archive before committing resources. Its “How to Get” information lists stories by greatest chance to obtain the item. Dragon Ball Legends Items Help.

When several options are eligible, compare them in this order:
- Ability coverage: Which intended battle members satisfy the Z Ability’s targets and conditions?
- Ability strength: What effect does it provide at the source character’s current Limit Break, and are any other activation conditions met?
- Mode fit: Is a Leader slot available, and are there mode-specific party or Equipment restrictions?
- Equipment fit: Do the wearer’s conditions, role, and needs match the item’s effects and slot values?
- Resource cost: Is improving or awakening the item worth the materials relative to another eligible option?
- Recommendation context: Is a suggestion based on high-Battle-Rank usage data, or is it the fallback shown when Rating Match data is limited?
These checks help compare the options actually available to your roster without mistaking a high rank, a popular choice, or a broad Tag match for a universally best build.
