To check whether your PC uses DDR4 or DDR5, look for an explicit memory-type field in a hardware-information utility. In CPU-Z, the Memory tab reports the current DRAM type; use the SPD tab and module part number to identify an individual stick. Don’t infer the generation from the amount of RAM or its reported frequency.

Check the memory type in a hardware-information utility

  1. Open CPU-Z and select the Memory tab.

  2. Find the field labeled Type. A clear DDR4 or DDR5 value identifies the system’s reported memory generation. The Memory tab also shows operating frequency, which is a separate detail. CPU-Z’s tab descriptions are documented on this CPU-Z information page.

If the type field is missing, unclear, or conflicts with another source, don’t decide from the frequency alone. Cross-check the exact PC or motherboard configuration and, if available, the installed module’s part number.

Use the SPD tab to identify an individual module

Select the SPD tab to inspect module-specific information, such as the manufacturer and part number. Use the part number to look up the module’s specifications with its manufacturer. This helps identify a particular stick, while the Memory tab is the more direct check of the system’s currently reported DRAM type. Some systems may not expose removable-module details.

Find your exact PC model in Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > About.

  2. Note the device model, processor, and installed RAM amount. Microsoft’s Windows device-information instructions describe those details, but do not promise a DDR-generation field on the About page.

Use the model information as a starting point for a manufacturer lookup, not as proof of DDR4 or DDR5. Microsoft’s SMBIOS documentation explains that a product name may not capture configuration differences, while a system SKU can distinguish configurations that differ in memory. Check the exact model and SKU, or the motherboard model for a desktop build, against the manufacturer’s specifications.

What to do if the readouts disagree

Windows’ installed-memory amount tells you capacity, not generation. Likewise, a frequency value is not an authoritative DDR4-versus-DDR5 label: memory type and current operating frequency are distinct details, and a module’s SPD rating may differ from its current operating value.
