Check your motherboard and processor before comparing DDR4 and DDR5: they determine which memory generation your PC can use. For a new build on Intel Core Ultra 200S, choose compatible DDR5. If your current system supports DDR4, a compatible DDR4 kit can be a sensible capacity upgrade; moving to DDR5 may also mean replacing the motherboard and processor. Compare the cost of the whole platform and the performance of your actual workload, not just the RAM kit.
Start with compatibility
DDR4 and DDR5 are different memory generations, and a motherboard is designed for one or the other. You cannot assume a DDR4 kit will work in a DDR5 board, or vice versa. Confirm the exact motherboard and processor specifications before buying; a generation change may require a new motherboard and, depending on the platform, a new processor too.

For AMD systems, AMD’s memory compatibility resource lists tested kits and provides information about EXPO and XMP support. Use it alongside the specifications for your particular motherboard: a kit’s rated speed or profile is not a guarantee that every board and processor combination will run it at that setting.

Building on Intel Core Ultra 200S
Intel’s Core Ultra 200S desktop platform specifies DDR5. Intel’s Series 2 product brief and processor support information give supported DDR5 speeds, which vary by processor SKU and DIMM configuration. Check the specifications for the exact processor and board. A platform’s supported speeds do not promise that a kit will reach its advertised overclocked profile.

Keeping a DDR4 system
If your existing motherboard supports DDR4, replacing a faulty kit or adding capacity with a compatible DDR4 kit may avoid a broader platform change. Verify the board’s supported capacity, kit configuration, and speeds before purchasing. If the board does not support the capacity or configuration you need, price the cost of a new platform rather than assuming a memory-only upgrade will solve it.
Moving an existing DDR4 PC to DDR5
Do not compare only the price of a DDR4 kit with the price of a DDR5 kit. Include any required motherboard and processor replacement in the DDR5 option, then compare the full cost with upgrading or keeping the current system. No region-specific, like-for-like current retail prices are established here, so there is no reliable basis for declaring either generation cheaper today.

How much difference does DDR5 make?
Memory performance depends on the processor, motherboard, memory configuration, and workload. In Tom’s Hardware’s mid-2026 comparison of Intel LGA 1700 configurations, DDR4 delivered 14% lower average gaming performance across a 16-game test suite; some titles showed larger drops. That result describes those tested configurations, not a guaranteed difference for other processors, graphics cards, games, or applications. See Tom’s Hardware’s DDR4-versus-DDR5 gaming comparison for the test context.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor your decision, look for comparisons using hardware and applications like yours. If you mainly game, consider the games you play and the rest of your system. For productivity or other workloads, use results for the applications you actually run rather than assuming a gaming benchmark predicts their performance.

How to choose a compatible kit
- Identify your components: find the exact motherboard model and processor model, then check their official specifications.
- Confirm the memory generation: choose only DDR4 or DDR5 as supported by that motherboard and processor combination.
- Check capacity and configuration: verify the board’s supported capacity and the number and arrangement of modules you plan to install.
- Check rated speed and profiles: compare the kit’s specifications with the board and processor support. For AMD systems, consult the AMD memory compatibility resource for tested kits and EXPO/XMP information.
- Compare the full upgrade cost: if switching generations, include the price of any motherboard or processor you must replace, not just memory.
Is DDR5 worth it for gaming?
For a new build whose platform requires DDR5, buying compatible DDR5 is the practical choice. For an existing DDR4 gaming PC, the benchmark evidence shows that memory generation can affect gaming results, but it does not establish that replacing your platform is worthwhile for every player. Weigh the full platform cost against results for your games and hardware. If you need more memory or a replacement kit and your existing board supports DDR4, a compatible DDR4 upgrade may be the more direct path.
