How to Check Whether Your PC Can Run a Steam Game

Use the Steam Store requirements and built-in Windows tools to compare your PC’s specs with a game’s minimum and recommended targets.

To check whether your PC can run a Steam game, compare your Windows PC’s specifications with the game’s minimum and recommended requirements on its Steam Store page. Check the operating system, processor, RAM, graphics card, storage, and any additional requirements. This is a useful compatibility estimate—not a promise of a particular frame rate or smooth performance.

1. Find the game’s requirements on Steam

Open the Steam Store page for the specific game and find its system requirements. Steam Support says, “The system requirements for all games are listed on the game’s Store page.” Steam also cautions that meeting them alone does not guarantee high FPS or strong in-game performance.

Note the minimum and recommended requirements separately. Record the operating system, processor (CPU), memory (RAM), graphics card (GPU), storage, and any other listed requirement, such as a DirectX version or a specific amount of video memory (VRAM).

2. Check your PC’s specifications in Windows

Processor, RAM, Windows version, and system type

Open Settings > System > About. Check the processor, installed RAM, system type, and Windows version. System type indicates whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit; compare it with the game’s stated operating-system requirement.

Graphics card and graphics details

Open Task Manager > Performance > GPU to see your graphics hardware. For more display and driver information, press Windows key + R, enter dxdiag, and inspect the display information. Microsoft documents these built-in methods for checking Windows and graphics details in its Windows specifications guide; Steam also explains how to use dxdiag to view system information.

Available storage

Check your drive’s capacity and free space in Windows storage settings or File Explorer. Compare free space—not just total drive size—with the game’s stated storage requirement.

3. Compare matching requirements

Compare each item in the game listing with the corresponding detail from your PC. Use the full model names, especially for processors and graphics cards. A shared brand name or a higher-looking model number does not prove that two chips from different product families perform equally. If you do not recognize a model, look for a reliable comparison or ask someone to compare the exact model names.

What to compare What to check
Operating system Windows version and system type against the game’s listed OS requirement.
Processor Your full CPU model against the listed minimum or recommended model.
Memory Installed RAM against the game’s stated amount.
Graphics Your full GPU model, plus any listed VRAM or graphics API requirement.
Storage Free space on the relevant drive against the game’s stated storage need.
Other requirements Any additional item the Store page specifies, such as a DirectX version.

Make two comparisons: one against minimum requirements and another against recommended requirements. The minimum tier is a basic screening point; the recommended tier is a more cautious target for stronger performance. Neither tier specifies a guaranteed FPS, resolution, or settings outcome.

4. Interpret the result carefully

  • You meet the recommended requirements: Your PC looks like a stronger match on paper, but actual performance can still vary.
  • You meet the minimum but not the recommended requirements: The game may run with constrained settings, but the listing does not tell you exactly what frame rate or experience to expect.
  • You are close to or below minimum: Treat compatibility as uncertain. Steam warns that a PC at or near the requirements can still have performance or launch issues.

Background applications, available memory, and graphics drivers can affect real-world results. Steam notes that outdated drivers can reduce performance even when the graphics hardware meets the game’s requirements, and that memory pressure and disk swapping can contribute to frame-rate hitches. Check Steam’s guidance on video drivers and game performance and hardware and memory-related performance issues if you are troubleshooting.

5. Decide what to do before buying or installing

If your PC is comfortably above minimum, the comparison is encouraging, not conclusive. If it is near or below minimum, check the exact models and any driver or memory issues before spending money. For a more useful individual recommendation, gather the game’s current requirements and your CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, free storage, target resolution, and desired settings. Without those details, no one can reliably promise compatibility, settings, or FPS.
