Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompare the exact game’s current system requirements with your PC’s actual hardware and software. Check every listed item—especially the processor, graphics card and VRAM, RAM, Windows version, DirectX, free storage, and any SSD or performance notes. Meeting a game’s minimum requirements is not a guarantee of smooth play at every resolution or setting.
1. Find the exact game’s current requirements
Open the game’s official store or publisher page and record both its minimum and recommended specifications. Read the full requirements block, including notes below the hardware list. Check again near purchase because listings can change.

Look for the intended operating system and whether 64-bit Windows is required, CPU and GPU models, stated video memory (VRAM), system RAM, DirectX version, available storage, and any SSD, internet, resolution, frame-rate, or graphics-preset notes. A requirement for available space is not the same as a requirement for a particular drive type, so keep those details distinct.

Horror is a genre, not a hardware specification. For example, Steam’s Until Dawn requirements listing specifies Windows 10 or 11, separate minimum and recommended tiers, DirectX 12, and 70 GB of SSD storage. Those figures apply to that game, not to horror games generally. Steam’s DEVOUR listing names DirectX 11, illustrating that API requirements also vary by title.

2. Find your PC’s specifications
On Windows, search for dxdiag and open DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Microsoft explains how to check the DirectX version on the System tab and save a system report with the tool: Microsoft’s DxDiag guidance.
- Open
dxdiagfrom Windows Search. - On the System tab, note the Windows edition and version, processor, installed memory, and DirectX version.
- Open the Display tab or tabs and note the graphics-device name and available display information. If there is more than one display tab or adapter, inspect each one; a PC may expose integrated and discrete graphics separately.
- If you need a shareable record, select “Save All Information…” to create a report.
- Check File Explorer or Windows Settings to confirm how much free space is available on the drive where you plan to install the game.
Microsoft’s instructions cover DirectX and DxDiag, while a Steam developer announcement also describes using DxDiag to inspect system and display information. On a laptop or multi-display setup, verify which adapter the game is expected to use rather than assuming the first listed device is the relevant one.

3. Compare each requirement with the matching PC component
Compare like with like. Do not treat a similar-looking model name or a higher number in one specification as proof that the PC meets a different requirement.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Operating system: Check that your Windows version and 64-bit status meet the listing.
- Processor: Compare the CPU model with the game’s stated CPU, not with its GPU.
- Graphics card and VRAM: Compare the graphics-device model and any stated dedicated video memory. If your PC has multiple adapters, identify the one the game will use.
- RAM: Compare installed system memory with the listed minimum or recommended amount.
- DirectX: Check the stated version or graphics API against your system information.
- Storage: Confirm both that you have enough free space and that the game’s SSD note, if any, is met.
- Performance notes: Keep any stated resolution, frame rate, graphics preset, or network condition attached to the tier it describes.
For example, Trepang2’s Steam support listing ties its minimum and recommended tiers to stated targets of low 1080p at 30 FPS and high 1080p at 60 FPS. Those targets are specific to that listing; they are not a general translation of what “minimum” or “recommended” means for every game.

4. Interpret minimum and recommended requirements carefully
Use the game’s own wording to understand what each tier is intended to support. If your PC meets the minimum but falls short of recommended, report that distinction rather than turning it into a simple “yes.” A minimum specification does not promise smooth performance at the resolution, settings, or frame rate you want. A recommended tier is not a guarantee for every configuration either.
If a listed part does not have a clear equivalent in your PC, mark the comparison as uncertain. Look for information or testing for that exact game version and CPU or GPU model; do not invent an equivalence based on a model number alone.

5. Use automatic checkers as a cross-check
CanItRunPC says it compares a PC’s specifications with minimum and recommended requirements carried from Steam pages. That can make a first-pass comparison quicker, but the service description does not establish that every configuration is detected flawlessly or that results predict performance on every PC.
Confirm the checker’s game listing and detected parts against the game’s official requirements and your DxDiag information. If the detected graphics adapter, game version, or a requirement is unclear, treat the result as incomplete rather than as a compatibility certification.
6. Make a purchase decision from the comparison
Summarize the result in terms of the exact game and the experience you want:
- All listed requirements match: The published specifications do not show a mismatch, but they cannot guarantee identical performance across all settings and configurations.
- Minimum matches, recommended does not: You may be below the game’s stated recommended tier. Use any performance target the listing provides, and avoid assuming your preferred settings will be supported.
- A minimum requirement is not met: The PC falls short of the published minimum on that item. Check for current, game-specific compatibility information before buying.
- A component or requirement is unclear: Keep the result uncertain until you verify the exact CPU, GPU, VRAM, API, or storage detail.
Do not buy an upgrade based only on the game’s genre or a checker’s broad result. First identify a specific shortfall in the exact game’s requirements and verify which component is responsible.
