How to Check Whether Your PC Can Run a Highly Rated Game

Check the game’s current official PC requirements, then compare them with your computer’s exact CPU, graphics card and VRAM, RAM, Windows architecture, DirectX/features, free storage and drive type. On Windows, dxdiag provides most of the required facts. Meeting the minimum row only means your system reaches the publisher’s lowest supported target; it does not guarantee smooth frame rates. Confirm the real result with an in-game performance monitor after installation.

1. Start with the game’s exact requirements

Requirements are game-specific. A generic label such as “gaming PC,” an Intel Core i5 badge or an NVIDIA graphics family does not answer whether one particular title will run. Open the publisher’s current requirements page or the exact storefront listing for the version you intend to install. Record every condition in both the minimum and recommended rows.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Windows edition, 64-bit architecture and any other operating-system condition
  • Exact processor model
  • Exact graphics adapter model and required video memory (VRAM)
  • System RAM
  • DirectX or another graphics API, plus named features such as shader support or Secure Boot
  • Required free space and whether the game specifies an SSD
  • The resolution, frame-rate, graphics preset or upscaling target attached to each row

Use the page for the current game version. Requirements can change with an expansion, remaster, major patch or a new PC port, so an old forum post or a general “can I run it” database is not an authority. Check whether the listing distinguishes the base game from downloadable content, a high-resolution texture pack or a multiplayer client; those extras can have separate storage and hardware demands.

What “minimum” and “recommended” actually mean

Minimum is normally the lowest configuration the publisher supports for a stated experience, often a low preset, lower resolution or lower frame-rate target. Recommended, high and very-high rows describe stronger targets; they are not universal quality labels shared by every game. A computer can pass minimum and still need reduced settings, dynamic resolution or a frame-rate cap.

For example, the PlayStation PC requirements page for Horizon Forbidden West (2024 page checked in 2026) lists 720p at 30 FPS on Very Low for minimum, 1080p at 60 FPS on Medium for recommended, and up to 4K at 60 FPS on Very High for the top tier. Each tier has its own CPU and GPU while all four tiers list 16GB of RAM and 150GB of SSD space. That is a target comparison, not a guarantee for every system using those parts. If your monitor is 1440p, compare against the closest higher-resolution target rather than assuming the 1080p row scales perfectly.

2. Collect your PC’s exact specifications in Windows

Run DxDiag

  1. Press Windows + R to open Run.
  2. Enter dxdiag and press Enter.
  3. If Windows asks whether to check digitally signed drivers, choose the option that lets the tool continue.
  4. On the System tab, record the operating-system edition and architecture, processor, installed memory and DirectX version.
  5. Open the Display tab (and additional Display tabs if present) and record the graphics adapter name, display memory/VRAM and driver details.
  6. Select Save All Information if you are troubleshooting or asking a support team to inspect the machine; keep the resulting text report.

Microsoft’s DirectX guidance specifically directs users to enter dxdiag, open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and check the System tab for the DirectX version. The Display tab supplies the graphics details. If the required DirectX version or feature is absent, Microsoft warns that a game may not work properly.

DxDiag reports installed memory, but do not confuse system RAM with graphics memory. A discrete card has dedicated VRAM; an integrated GPU may reserve part of system RAM. Use the field that matches the requirement, and check every Display tab if the PC has both integrated and discrete adapters.

Check storage and drive type

Open File Explorer, right-click the destination drive and choose Properties to see available space. Identify whether it is a mechanical HDD, a 2.5-inch SATA SSD or an NVMe SSD. Capacity alone is not enough when the requirement says SSD: an HDD with the same free-space number may still fail the stated target or produce much longer loading and streaming times. Leave additional headroom for patches, shader caches and the operating system rather than treating the game’s number as a safe total-disk size.

Check the drive that will actually hold the game, not merely the drive containing Windows. A launcher may install files on one volume and shader caches on another. If the title requires 150GB, keep more than that available so an update can unpack temporary files without stopping midway.

Record laptop and desktop constraints

Laptop names can hide lower-power versions of a GPU, and some laptops cannot upgrade their CPU or graphics processor at all. On a desktop, note the motherboard’s supported memory generation, the power supply’s wattage and connectors, and the case’s graphics-card clearance before planning an upgrade. Also note whether the machine is running on battery or a vendor performance mode during testing; power limits can materially change clocks.

Check What to compare Why a near match can still fail
Operating system Windows edition, version and 64-bit architecture A supported edition or architecture may be mandatory even when the hardware is fast enough.
CPU Full processor model, including generation and suffix “Core i5” or “Ryzen 5” covers widely different performance levels; integrated graphics and laptop power limits also matter.
GPU Full graphics-card model Cards with similar names can have different architectures, power limits and feature support.
VRAM Dedicated video memory Insufficient VRAM can cause texture problems, stutter or forced reductions in resolution even when the GPU is otherwise close.
RAM Installed system memory and, when relevant, channel configuration The game and Windows share RAM; background applications reduce what remains available.
API and features DirectX/API version plus every named feature A DirectX number alone does not prove support for a required shader, ray-tracing path, Secure Boot condition or other feature.
Storage Free capacity and required drive type An HDD may not satisfy an SSD requirement, and a nearly full drive can leave too little working space.

Do not infer performance from an i5/i7 label, a brand family or a similar-looking GPU name. If the publisher names a feature, verify that feature as well as the API version. Compare architecture and feature support when a requirement lists a very old or very new card; a newer-sounding model is not automatically compatible with every rendering path.

4. Read tiered requirements as performance targets

When a requirements page gives several resolutions or presets, treat each row as a separate promise the publisher is aiming to support. Recommended is not simply “the minimum plus a little extra”; it may target a different resolution, frame rate and visual preset.

Example tier Stated target Resources listed by the publisher How to use it
Horizon Forbidden West minimum 720p, 30 FPS, Very Low 16GB RAM and 150GB SSD, with a lower CPU/GPU pairing than higher tiers Use this as a low-settings support floor, not a 1080p/60 expectation.
Horizon Forbidden West recommended 1080p, 60 FPS, Medium 16GB RAM and 150GB SSD, with a stronger CPU/GPU pairing Compare your parts against this row if 1080p/60 is your goal.
Horizon Forbidden West very high Up to 4K, 60 FPS, Very High 16GB RAM and 150GB SSD, with the page’s highest CPU/GPU tier Expect substantially greater graphics and CPU demands than minimum.
Rainbow Six Siege configurations Separate 1080p, 1440p and 4K targets Ubisoft lists 65GB available SSD space, DirectX 12 and different CPU, GPU and VRAM requirements by tier Choose the resolution you actually use, then compare that specific row.

The figures above are the publishers’ stated configurations: the Horizon Forbidden West page was checked in 2026, while the Rainbow Six Siege requirements are the current Ubisoft listing checked in 2026. They are not independent benchmark results and should not be generalized to other games. A 4K row can demand a much stronger GPU while leaving RAM unchanged, so upgrading memory alone will not deliver the higher-resolution target.

5. Decide what a mismatch means

Everything meets minimum

You have passed the compatibility screen for the publisher’s minimum target. Install with the minimum row’s resolution and preset first, then raise settings gradually. Keep expectations tied to that row; passing it does not establish a steady 60 FPS. If the game offers a benchmark scene, run it after the first launch and repeat it after each major settings change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One item is below minimum

Identify the failing field before buying anything. A storage mismatch points to a compatible SSD or additional free space. A RAM mismatch points to a matching memory kit. A GPU or VRAM mismatch points to a graphics-card decision. An operating-system, API or feature mismatch may not be solved by adding memory or storage. If only free capacity is short, uninstalling unused games may be cheaper than replacing a drive; if the drive type itself fails, capacity alone will not fix it.

  • Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
  • Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
  • Includes Acronis cloning software
  • 5-year limited warranty

Several major items are below minimum

Price the required changes together and compare that total with a replacement desktop or laptop. Include a power supply, cooler, operating-system license if needed, storage and installation costs in the comparison. A new GPU cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system, an inadequate power supply or a non-upgradeable laptop. Use the same game requirement table when comparing a replacement system, and leave headroom for the desired resolution rather than buying only for today’s minimum row.

6. Check upgrade compatibility before spending

  • Memory: Match DDR generation, capacity, speed and desktop DIMM or laptop SO-DIMM form factor. Confirm the motherboard or laptop’s maximum supported capacity and available slots. A mixed kit may run at a lower speed, so a matched kit is the safer comparison.
  • Graphics card: Verify power-supply wattage, PCIe power connectors, case length and thickness, motherboard clearance and the card’s required API/features. A card that fits the slot may still not fit the case or power budget. Check the target card’s VRAM against the game’s row rather than judging only by benchmark tier.
  • Storage: For an M.2 replacement, check whether the slot supports NVMe and which physical length it accepts. For a SATA drive, confirm the data and power connections and mounting space. Preserve enough free capacity after installation and confirm that the operating system or launcher can see the new volume.
  • CPU: Check socket, BIOS support, motherboard power delivery and cooling. A processor upgrade can require a firmware update or a new cooler. Confirm that the board supports the chip before ordering.
  • Laptop: Assume the CPU and GPU are not upgradeable unless the manufacturer explicitly documents otherwise. User-replaceable RAM or storage still requires the correct part and access procedure.

Upgrade the component that actually fails the target. Do not buy a faster part solely because its product tier sounds higher than the one listed; the game’s exact model, VRAM and feature requirements are the relevant test. When shopping for an SSD, verify whether you need a 1TB SATA or M.2 NVMe model, its physical fit and motherboard support. For RAM, match capacity, DDR generation, speed and form factor. For a GPU, match the power supply, connectors, clearance, VRAM and API features.

7. Validate performance after installation

A requirements table cannot account for every driver version, background process, thermal limit or graphics setting. Start at the publisher’s stated resolution and preset, load a repeatable area of the game and observe the system while playing. Test after shaders finish compiling and after the game has applied its latest patch.

  1. Enable Steam’s in-game overlay performance monitor, or an equivalent trusted overlay supported by your platform.
  2. Watch base and generated FPS, CPU utilization, GPU utilization, system RAM and video-memory use while moving through gameplay rather than only at a menu.
  3. Record whether frame time is stable and whether stutter appears during traversal, combat or loading.
  4. Change one setting group at a time—resolution or upscaling, textures, shadows and effects—so you can identify which change affects the bottleneck.
  5. Repeat the test with background applications closed and, on a laptop, while connected to its charger and set to the intended performance mode.

Steam Support describes the performance monitor as a way to determine whether CPU utilization or GPU utilization is the bottleneck. High GPU use with full or near-full VRAM usually calls for lower graphics settings, reduced resolution or a stronger GPU. A CPU-limited result calls for CPU-focused settings, background-process checks or a processor/platform decision. System-memory pressure can force swapping and produce stutter; close unnecessary applications or add compatible RAM if the machine supports it.

Generated frames can make an overlay report a higher displayed frame rate without removing the underlying CPU or GPU workload. Note both base and generated FPS when the monitor provides both, and judge smoothness by frame-time consistency rather than one peak number.

8. Troubleshoot common “it should run” failures

The game will not launch

  • Recheck Windows architecture, DirectX version and every named feature, not only the CPU and GPU.
  • Install current graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer and restart.
  • Confirm that the game is installed on the required drive type and that the drive has working free space beyond the install size.
  • Save a fresh DxDiag report for support; it exposes the exact adapter, driver and DirectX information.

The game launches but stutters

  • Check system RAM and VRAM usage during the stutter, not after quitting.
  • Lower texture quality when VRAM is full; lower resolution, shadows or effects when the GPU is saturated.
  • Investigate CPU utilization and background processes when the GPU is underused but frame times spike.
  • Allow shader compilation and patching to finish, and avoid filling the system drive or game SSD to its limit.
  • Compare an HDD and SSD installation if the title specifies an SSD; streaming-heavy scenes may expose the drive mismatch.

The frame rate is lower than expected

Compare the observed resolution and preset with the row you used. A minimum specification tied to 720p/30 cannot be judged against a 1440p/60 expectation. Recheck that the game is using the intended discrete GPU on a laptop and that thermal throttling or a power limit is not reducing clock speeds. Verify that an external monitor has not switched the game to a higher resolution than planned.

9. A reusable decision checklist

  1. Open the current official requirements for the exact game and version.
  2. Write down the minimum and desired target rows, including resolution, frame rate, preset, SSD, DirectX and feature conditions.
  3. Run dxdiag and save the System and Display facts.
  4. Check free space and identify HDD, SATA SSD or NVMe SSD.
  5. Compare exact OS, CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, API/features and storage values.
  6. Mark the first failing field instead of relying on an overall “gaming PC” label.
  7. Verify motherboard, power supply, case, connectors and laptop upgradeability before ordering a part.
  8. After installation, test at the publisher’s target and use a live overlay to find the actual bottleneck.
  9. Keep the requirement page, DxDiag report and observed settings together if you need technical support.

10. How to make the buying decision

Use the failing field and your intended target to decide whether an upgrade is worthwhile. If the only problem is free capacity, adding a compatible SSD may solve the issue. If RAM is below the stated amount and the platform has open slots, a matched kit can address both the requirement and memory pressure. A GPU replacement is justified when the exact card or VRAM misses the target, but verify power, clearance and feature support first. When the CPU, GPU, storage and platform all miss, calculate the combined parts and installation cost and compare it with a replacement system that meets the same recommended row.

Do not pay for a component that does not address the bottleneck. A very fast GPU cannot overcome a CPU-limited game, and more RAM cannot provide a missing graphics feature. Select the row that matches your monitor and desired frame rate, then buy enough capability for that row rather than relying on a generic “future-proof” label.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell quickly whether my PC can run a game?

Open the publisher’s current PC requirements, run dxdiag, and compare the exact Windows architecture, CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, DirectX/features, free storage and drive type. Passing minimum is only a compatibility screen; test real FPS after installation.

Does meeting minimum requirements guarantee 60 FPS?

No. Minimum is tied to the publisher’s lowest stated resolution, preset or frame-rate target. For example, Horizon Forbidden West lists minimum at 720p/30 on Very Low, while its recommended row targets 1080p/60 on Medium.

Is an i5 or Ryzen 5 enough for every game?

No. Those labels cover many generations and power levels. Compare the complete processor model, generation and suffix with the game’s listed CPU.

Why does VRAM matter if my graphics card is close?

VRAM holds graphics data such as textures. If the game needs more than the card provides, you may see stutter, texture problems or forced reductions in resolution even when the GPU’s general performance is close.

Can an HDD satisfy a game that requires an SSD?

Treat the drive type as a separate requirement. An HDD with enough free gigabytes does not meet an SSD condition and can produce longer loading or streaming delays. Install on a compatible SATA or NVMe SSD when the publisher specifies one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I upgrade first when one requirement fails?

Upgrade the component that fails: storage for capacity or drive type, RAM for memory, and GPU/VRAM for graphics. Before ordering, verify motherboard support, power supply, connectors, case clearance and laptop upgradeability.

How do I find the bottleneck after installing the game?

Use Steam’s performance monitor or an equivalent overlay while playing. Compare base and generated FPS, frame-time stability, CPU and GPU utilization, system RAM and VRAM. High GPU use points to graphics settings or a stronger GPU; CPU or memory pressure calls for CPU, background-process or RAM investigation.

The Bottom Line

Use the exact official requirement row for your desired resolution and frame rate, collect matching facts with dxdiag, and compare every field—not just the CPU and GPU names. Minimum is a floor, not a smooth-play guarantee. Fix the specific failing component only after checking platform compatibility, then validate the result with live FPS, utilization, RAM and VRAM measurements.
