Check your device’s model and available update
Software Update is the quickest way to see what Apple currently offers for your device. The model check answers a different question: whether that device can run a particular major release.

iPhone
- Open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Check the installed iOS version and whether an update is offered.
- For eligibility for the newest major iOS release, compare your iPhone model with Apple’s compatibility list.
iPad
- Open Settings > General > About to find the model and current iPadOS version.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update to see what update is available for that iPad.
- For a specific major release, check the exact model against Apple’s iPadOS 27 model guide.
Mac
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings > General > Software Update. On older macOS versions, search for Software Update or follow Apple’s instructions for older systems.
- Review the installed macOS version and any update offered. Apple says, “Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac model.”
- For macOS 27 eligibility, compare your Mac’s exact model with Apple’s macOS 27 Golden Gate compatibility list.
Check the compatibility list for the release you want
As of October 4, 2026, Apple’s security releases page lists iOS 27.0.1, iPadOS 27.0.1, and macOS 27.0.1 as the latest versions. Apple identifies macOS 27 Golden Gate as its latest major release. Version numbers and supported-model lists can change; check Apple’s security releases page for the current snapshot.

iOS 27
Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility list starts with iPhone 11 and includes later iPhone models. Check the named model rather than assuming that a phone qualifies based on its age or appearance.

iPadOS 27
Apple’s release listing gives these supported starting points: iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation), iPad Air (4th generation), iPad (9th generation), and iPad mini (6th generation), plus later models. For an exact iPad, use Apple’s iPadOS 27 model guide, which lists model names, including newer models.
macOS 27 Golden Gate
Apple’s compatibility page lists MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models beginning with M1, 2020; MacBook Neo (13-inch, A18 Pro); iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021); Mac mini (M1, 2020); Mac Studio (2022); and Mac Pro (2023), along with later generations specifically named on the page. Use Apple’s list for the precise model: eligibility cannot be reliably inferred from a Mac’s age alone.

Understand what “up to date” means
A device can be current on the updates available to it without supporting the latest major operating-system release. Apple continues to publish updates for older software branches; for example, its releases page lists iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1 alongside version 27.0.1. So check both the device’s Software Update screen and the compatibility list for the major release you care about.

Back up before installing
Checking compatibility does not require a backup, but Apple recommends backing up before installing an update. For iPhone and iPad, Apple describes using iCloud or a computer; its Mac update instructions also recommend a backup before installation.
