These habits can reduce avoidable damage, but they cannot prevent every defect or guarantee a particular lifespan. Care instructions, water and dust resistance, warranty coverage, and repair prices vary by model and market.
How do I protect a foldable phone screen and hinge?
Check the gap before closing the phone
Before folding, check both the screen surfaces and the hinge area for cards, coins, keys, or grit. An object trapped between the halves can scratch or puncture the inner display or stop the hinge from closing properly. Samsung and Motorola both warn against closing their cited foldables with obstructions inside. If the phone resists closing, open it and check for debris rather than forcing it shut. Fold it gently, in the intended direction
Use the hinge’s normal movement; do not force it or fold the phone backward. Samsung’s care page states, “DO NOT use excessive force when unfolding or folding.” Avoid pressing hard on the inner screen or crease, and do not touch it with a pen, fingernail, or other sharp or hard object. Leave the inner-screen protector in place
On cited Samsung and Motorola foldables, the factory inner-screen protector is a model-specific part of the display system, not a generic film to peel off or replace casually. If it lifts, bubbles, or needs replacement, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider about the correct part and procedure. Samsung’s US guidance says damage caused by removal by the user or a non-authorized provider is not covered by the cited Standard Limited Warranty. How should I keep dust, grit, and liquids away?
Keep debris away from the hinge and screen gap
Dust and grit can collect around the hinge or between the screens. Motorola cautions, “Avoid exposing your phone to tiny pieces of debris, such as grit.” Avoid using a foldable in particularly dusty or sandy conditions, and do not assume a resistance rating makes the hinge or inner display dustproof. Motorola’s Razr Fold guidance specifically warns that the phone is not dustproof and that dust exposure can reduce hinge life and damage the display. Motorola hardware guidance.
Do not treat water resistance as permission to get it wet
Resistance ratings and their limits differ between models. Samsung’s US care guidance distinguishes ratings across its cited devices and says its cited IP48 models are not advised for beach or pool use. Motorola’s Razr Fold guidance says that resistance decreases with normal wear and that the phone is not waterproof. Avoid salt water, pools, beaches, pressurized water, and charging a device while it is wet; follow the exact instructions for your model rather than extrapolating from another phone’s rating. Clean gently and follow the model’s instructions
For the cited Samsung guidance, hinge dust should be wiped away gently with a soft, dry cloth. Motorola likewise recommends a soft, dry cloth for its cited Razr screen guidance and cautions against rough materials and spraying cleaner directly onto the screen. Do not use abrasive materials; check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions for your exact device before using any liquid or cleaning product. A case made for the exact phone model may add protection, but case fit and hinge coverage vary. Before buying one, check that it is compatible with your model, does not interfere with folding, and provides the hinge coverage you want. What should I check before paying for a repair?
Confirm coverage for your model and location
Do not assume accidental screen or hinge damage is included in a standard warranty. Motorola’s US support says physical damage, including broken screens, is not covered by its standard warranty and describes MotoCare Accident Protection Plan as a separate coverage route. Eligibility, covered events, exclusions, and costs depend on the plan, device, warranty status, and market. Check the current local terms before relying on coverage. Motorola US warranty information.
Compare the repair category, not just the phone model
Repair prices can differ by model, market, service option, and the specific work required. As a US-specific example, Samsung’s repair page listed $589 for a Galaxy Z Fold7 inner-screen module replacement at the time represented by that page. It lists a different price for “screen repair,” so those categories should not be treated as interchangeable or as a general estimate for foldable repairs.
