How to compare the cost of owning two phones
Use the same ownership period and a consistent method for both phones. A first-year trade-in offer does not establish the cost of keeping a device for three or four years.

- Start with the actual purchase price. Compare the same storage capacity and new or used condition. Use checkout prices for the phones you are considering; manufacturer list prices are only a dated reference point.
- Add coverage costs. Include the full premium for the time you expect to own the phone, then account for deductibles, claim limits, eligibility, and exclusions. Check whether the specific damage has a repair option or is replacement-only.
- Compare repair exposure. Seek quotes for the exact model and job: inner display, outer display, hinge, or another component. Note the country, service provider, taxes, fees, and whether a screen-module replacement includes other parts.
- Separate repair routes. A paid out-of-warranty repair, warranty service, special manufacturer program, and buying a replacement phone are different scenarios. Do not assume a defect qualifies for warranty or a special program without checking its terms.
- Estimate what you will get back. Compare dated trade-in quotes and private-sale listings for the same model and condition in your market. Treat trade-in credit as a program-specific offer, not cash resale value. Private listings show asking prices, not confirmed sale prices; subtract selling and shipping costs.
- Calculate for the same number of months. Use your likely holding period for both devices, and keep one-time offers separate from recurring costs.
U.S. example: Samsung prices and repair quotes
Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP list gives these unlocked 256GB list prices: Galaxy Z Fold7, $1,999.99 and Galaxy Z Flip7, $1,099.99. These are manufacturer list prices, not live checkout or street prices; Samsung notes that prices can change. Fold and flip models also occupy different price tiers, so compare each with a conventional phone that fits the same budget and use case.
Repair prices require the exact model, repair type, and current quote. On Samsung’s U.S. repair page, the Galaxy Z Fold6 inner-screen price appears as $200 in an offer column and $429 in another listed column. The corresponding Galaxy Z Flip6 inner-screen figures are $200 and $239. The page warns that suggested prices vary by region or authorized service location and exclude taxes and fees; the offer-column figure may depend on qualification and terms. Neither figure should be treated as a universal out-of-warranty cost. Check Samsung’s current model-specific repair information before using a number in your calculation.

Also check what the quoted job includes. Samsung distinguishes a screen-module replacement—which replaces the screen, bezel, and battery—from a separate repair that replaces only the front screen where available. It describes certified technicians and authorized repair options, including walk-in, mail-in, and at-home service, and says its repair service carries a 90-day repair warranty. Those details do not make different repair jobs interchangeable.
Trade-in credits are not resale guarantees
Samsung Business U.S.’s displayed trade-in comparison lists credits of $612 for a Galaxy Z Fold7, $432 for a Fold6, $279 for a Fold5, and $231 for a Flip6. These are credits shown by a particular program toward a destination device, not guaranteed cash sale proceeds. The offer can change with the destination phone, device condition, promotion, and time. Recheck the program’s current terms and quote when estimating what you will receive.

Coverage and replacement programs are not the same as insurance for every failure
Canadian Google Preferred Care example
Google’s Canadian Preferred Care listing groups the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel Fold under a displayed two-year plan costing CAD 359, with a CAD 39 screen repair fee. The same page says repairs are unavailable for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold under this listing. These are Canadian terms and amounts, not U.S. plan prices or terms for other countries. A low repair fee is of little help if the listed repair route is unavailable for the particular model. Check Google’s Canadian Preferred Care details.
Eligibility-based Pixel 9 Pro Fold replacement
Google separately describes an Extended Warranty Program for eligible Pixel 9 Pro Fold devices with functionality issues. After inspection, an affected eligible device may receive a replacement at no charge; the terms limit the program to one replacement per device and say replacements are available starting December 8, 2025. Cracked displays or cover glass and liquid intrusion can affect eligibility, and support options vary by location. This is not blanket protection for every Pixel 9 Pro Fold or every kind of damage. Self-repair availability depends on the model
Samsung says its U.S. self-repair program added the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5, among other products, with genuine parts, tools, and guides available through Encompass. It also says certified professionals provide in-warranty and out-of-warranty repairs using genuine parts. That announcement establishes a route for select devices, not that every foldable model or repair is supported. Check Samsung’s self-repair announcement for the models and parts covered.

There is no universal private-sale price curve that applies to every foldable model, condition, and country. For your own estimate, capture date-stamped quotes for the exact model and storage from trade-in services available locally, then compare them with private listings in similar condition. Keep asking prices distinct from completed-sale proceeds and subtract fees.
When a foldable may cost less—or more—to own
- The foldable may cost more if its higher purchase price is paired with an expensive repair, substantial protection premiums, or lower exit proceeds.
- The gap may narrow if you keep the phone longer, qualify for useful coverage, avoid damage, or get a strong trade-in promotion. A promotion still needs to be compared with the phone’s actual purchase price and the value of the destination-device credit.
- The answer depends on your risk assumptions. The available figures do not establish a universal probability of inner-screen failure or a repair rate for foldables. Do not convert depreciation data into a claim that foldables fail more often.
For a useful decision, fill in the same ownership period for both phones using your checkout prices, actual plan terms, model-specific repair quotes, and realistic exit estimates. The comparison is only as reliable as those inputs.
