If the voice assistant responds, Google says the device is connected to Wi-Fi at that moment. If it does not, check the Google Home app and then determine whether the problem affects one device or your whole home network.
Check whether the device responds
- Ask a simple question or give a familiar command. A spoken response is Google’s indicator that the device is connected to Wi-Fi. It confirms connectivity at that moment; it does not establish that every app or cloud feature is working.
- If there is no response, check the Google Home app. Find the device tile and look for its status. Google says an offline device or home may be marked “Offline” in the Home or Nest app. Treat that status as a troubleshooting clue, not proof that the speaker is broken.
Find out whether one device or the whole home is affected
If multiple Nest products show offline, investigate shared causes—power, the router, and the internet connection—before troubleshooting each device separately. Google’s recommended checks are:

- Check whether power is out.
- On another phone, tablet, or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi, turn off cellular data and try opening a website. If it fails, the issue may be with the home internet connection rather than one Nest device.
- Ask your internet provider whether there is an outage if the other device also cannot get online.
- Check Google’s Nest service status for a service issue.
If other devices can use the internet and only one Google Home or Nest product is offline, focus next on that device’s Wi-Fi connection and setup.
Reconnect after changing Wi-Fi or the router
If you changed your Wi-Fi name, password, or router, reconnect a speaker or display in the Google Home app:

- Open the Google Home app and hold the device tile.
- Tap Settings > Device information > Wi-Fi > Forget this network.
- Return to the app’s home screen and tap Add > Device > Search for device.
- Follow the setup instructions to connect the device to the current Wi-Fi network.
When to reset the device
Do not start with a factory reset. Google’s guidance treats resetting and setting up again as a fallback if the app’s reconnection steps fail, if the app says it cannot communicate with the device while forgetting the network, or if Wi-Fi settings cannot be changed in the app. Confirm that the device has power and that the network is working first; if a reset is needed, use the instructions for your specific device.

A voice response verifies Wi-Fi connection at the time you asked. An “Offline” label tells you the app considers the device or home offline, but does not identify the cause by itself. Testing another device on the same Wi-Fi helps separate a single-device problem from a broader internet issue; the Nest service-status page can help identify a Google-side issue.
