How to Fix a Mouse That Won’t Connect to a Laptop

Identify whether your mouse uses Bluetooth, a USB receiver, or a cable, then follow the matching checks for power, pairing, ports, and laptop faults.

First identify how the mouse connects: Bluetooth, a dedicated USB receiver, or a cable. Each needs a different fix. Then check the mouse’s power and follow the matching steps below; settings and pairing controls vary by laptop operating system and mouse model.

Start with the connection type and power

A wireless mouse is not necessarily a Bluetooth mouse. Bluetooth pairing uses the laptop’s Bluetooth settings; a receiver-based mouse communicates through its compatible USB receiver. A wired mouse connects directly by cable. Logitech provides separate setup paths for Bluetooth and receiver-based models, and compatibility depends on the specific mouse.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Bluetooth: The mouse should appear in the laptop’s Bluetooth device settings after you put it into pairing mode.
  • USB receiver: The mouse needs its compatible receiver plugged into the laptop; pairing it in Bluetooth settings will not connect it.
  • Wired USB: The cable should be firmly connected to a working USB port. If the mouse has a detachable cable, check both ends.

Turn the mouse on. For a model with replaceable batteries, check their orientation and try fresh batteries if needed. For a rechargeable model, charge it as directed by its manufacturer. Battery size and charging method depend on the model. Microsoft’s Surface mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guide recommends checking battery placement and replacing batteries when necessary.

If the mouse connects by Bluetooth

Check Bluetooth and pairing mode

  1. Confirm that the laptop supports Bluetooth and that Bluetooth is switched on. On Windows, also make sure airplane mode is off.
  2. Use the mouse’s model-specific instructions to put it in discoverable or pairing mode. The button, switch, and indicator-light behavior differ between models.
  3. Open the laptop’s Bluetooth settings, choose the option to add a device, and select the mouse when it appears. Follow any on-screen pairing prompts.

For Windows guidance on checking Bluetooth, discovery, and pairing, see Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting steps. Logitech also documents its model-specific process in Bluetooth Setup for Mouse.

Remove the mouse and pair it again

If the mouse is listed in Bluetooth settings but will not connect, remove or forget it from the laptop’s device list, then put the mouse back into pairing mode and add it again. Select the device in Bluetooth settings and complete the prompts. The exact labels and pairing steps vary by operating system and mouse. Logitech’s Bluetooth pairing and troubleshooting instructions cover Windows, macOS, and other platforms.

Try Windows diagnostics and check for interference

On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It also recommends driver-update steps through Device Manager. If you use Windows 10, its Bluetooth instructions differ; Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Move the mouse away from likely sources of radio interference and test again. Microsoft notes that some unshielded USB 3.0 devices can interfere with Bluetooth. Disconnecting or moving nearby devices temporarily can help determine whether interference is involved.

If the mouse uses a USB receiver

  1. Check that the receiver is the one compatible with your mouse model. A different receiver is not automatically interchangeable.
  2. Plug it directly into a working USB port on the laptop. For troubleshooting, bypass USB hubs, docks, and switches.
  3. If the mouse still does not respond, try another USB port. If available, test the port with another USB device.
  4. If the mouse or receiver has a connect or reset control, use the manufacturer’s instructions for that model to reconnect them.
  5. Move the mouse and receiver away from nearby wireless or electronic devices, then test again.

Microsoft recommends trying another USB port and connecting directly rather than through a hub when troubleshooting USB devices. Logitech’s receiver connection troubleshooting includes direct-port, battery, and interference checks; some guidance on that page concerns legacy devices, so follow the instructions for your model.

If the mouse is wired

  • Unplug the mouse and reconnect it firmly, then try a different USB port.
  • Remove any hub, dock, or switch from the path while testing.
  • If the mouse has a detachable cable, check that it is seated at both the mouse and laptop.

These checks help distinguish a loose connection or port problem from a fault with the mouse itself. Microsoft’s Windows mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guidance covers USB port and hub checks.

Find out whether the mouse or laptop is at fault

Test the mouse on another computer, following its normal connection steps. If it works there, focus on the original laptop’s Bluetooth settings, USB port, or drivers. If it fails on another PC too, the mouse may need service or replacement. A cross-computer test is not conclusive if the other computer lacks Bluetooth or the required driver. Microsoft outlines this test for both Surface mice and keyboards and Windows mouse and keyboard problems.

The mouse does not appear in Bluetooth settings Confirm the laptop supports Bluetooth, switch Bluetooth on, turn off airplane mode, and put the mouse in pairing mode.
The Bluetooth mouse appears but will not connect Remove it from the device list, then pair it again.
A receiver-based mouse is unresponsive Verify receiver compatibility, connect it directly to another working USB port, and use the model’s reconnect instructions if available.
A wired mouse is unresponsive Reseat the cable and try another USB port without a hub or dock.
The mouse works on another computer Investigate the original laptop’s Bluetooth, USB connection, or drivers.
The mouse fails on another computer too Check that the second computer supports the connection method and has any required driver; if it does, the mouse may need service or replacement.

Do not buy a generic Bluetooth adapter or receiver as a first fix. First establish whether the laptop lacks Bluetooth or the mouse requires a receiver, then check compatibility with both the laptop and the exact mouse model.
