Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a reputable breach lookup, such as Have I Been Pwned, to check whether your email address appears in breach records the service has indexed. A match does not prove anyone can access your account now, and no match does not prove your address has never been exposed. If you get a match, secure the affected account and any other account where you reused its password.
How to check your email address
-
Go directly to the Have I Been Pwned email breach checker.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
-
Enter the email address you want to check. Do not enter your email password: checking breach records for an address and checking whether a password has appeared in a breach are separate services.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
If the checker returns results, review the named breach entries and the categories of data reported. The result is about records in the service’s index, not a live test of whether your account can be accessed.

What a match—or no match—means
A match means the address appeared in data associated with a breach that the service has indexed. It is a reason to investigate the listed service and data categories, not proof of a current account takeover. A clean result means the service did not find your address in the records it has loaded; it cannot rule out exposure in records it does not have. The service also says sensitive or retired breaches may not appear in an on-demand search. See Have I Been Pwned’s FAQ for its search and breach-record limits.

What to do if your email appears
Secure the affected account and reused passwords
Change the password for the affected account. If you used that password anywhere else, change it there too, using a different password for each account. Password reuse can turn exposure at one service into a risk for other accounts; the UK National Cyber Security Centre advises changing reused passwords after a breach in its guidance for individuals.

Turn on multifactor authentication
Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it is available, especially on your email account and accounts that can reset other passwords. NIST says, “The first thing you should do is add multifactor authentication.” The NIST password guidance and CISA guidance discuss account-protection options; CISA favors physical security keys among the methods it compares, followed by authenticator-app MFA, then SMS- and email-based MFA.

Follow the breach notice for the data involved
Check which data categories the lookup lists and read any notice from the affected organization. The right next step depends on what was exposed. If the incident involves identity information and you suspect misuse, the FTC recommends taking steps such as reviewing credit reports and accounts, considering a credit freeze or fraud alert, and reporting suspected identity theft. Its breach-response guidance says: “If you find that someone is using your information to commit fraud, identitytheft.gov can help you report that, too.” The FTC also provides data breach resources.
Be cautious about follow-up messages
Attackers may use breach details to make emails or texts seem credible. Do not trust a message just because it includes an old password or information associated with a breach. Instead, open the service’s official website or app directly and secure your account there.

What the lookup does—and does not—store
Have I Been Pwned says its email breach service stores email addresses and breach metadata, such as data categories, rather than the underlying compromised records. Its separate Pwned Passwords service stores password hashes without linking them to an email identity; that is not the same as entering your email password into the email checker. For ongoing breach notifications, the service retains the monitored email address, subscription date and a random verification token. These details are described in the HIBP support article, updated 22 March 2026, and its FAQ. Review the service’s current privacy information before signing up for monitoring.
