Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo check whether your computer can run Adobe Photoshop smoothly, compare its operating system, processor, RAM, graphics hardware, display resolution and available storage with Adobe’s requirements for the exact Photoshop version and platform. Then check what Photoshop itself detects and consider the size and complexity of the work you do. Meeting Adobe’s minimum means your computer meets the stated baseline; it does not guarantee that every large project will feel responsive.
Check the requirements for your Photoshop version
Photoshop requirements vary by version and operating system, so do not compare a Windows PC against the macOS list or assume an older installation has the same requirements as a current one. Adobe’s Photoshop system requirements page separates Windows Intel/AMD, Windows ARM and macOS configurations. Check the live table for the version you use or plan to install before buying or upgrading hardware.

For desktop Photoshop 27.x and later, Adobe lists 8 GB of RAM as the minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended. The remaining requirements differ by platform:
| Platform | Adobe’s listed requirements for Photoshop 27.x and later |
|---|---|
| Windows Intel/AMD | Windows 11 v24H2 or v23H2, or Windows 10 v22H2 or v21H2 LTSC; a multicore Intel or AMD processor; AVX2 and SSE 4.2 support; DirectX 12 GPU at feature level 12_0 or later with at least 1.5 GB GPU memory. Adobe recommends a GPU newer than seven years with current drivers, and 4 GB GPU memory for 4K displays and higher. |
| Windows ARM | Adobe provides a separate Windows ARM requirements table. It lists 8 GB RAM minimum, 16 GB recommended, and 4 GB GPU memory; check the live table for the supported OS and processor details for your version. |
| macOS | macOS 26, 15.x or 14.x; a multicore Intel or Apple Silicon processor; GPU support for Metal; 8 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB or more recommended. Adobe lists 10 GB available storage as the installation minimum and 100 GB as recommended. |
Adobe also recommends a fast internal SSD for installation and additional high-speed storage for scratch disks. Photoshop cannot be installed on a case-sensitive file system. These figures are platform- and version-specific, not a universal specification for every Photoshop computer.

Find your computer’s hardware and free space
Use your operating system’s system settings to identify its version, processor or chip, installed memory, graphics hardware, display resolution and free disk space. The names and locations of these details can vary between operating-system releases. Record the exact values rather than relying on a general description such as “gaming laptop” or “new computer.”
If Photoshop is installed, its system report gives you a useful cross-check. Choose Help > System Info, then copy the report. Adobe says it includes the Photoshop version, operating system, physical and logical processor counts, built-in memory and memory available to Photoshop. See Adobe’s instructions for gathering Photoshop system information.
Check what Photoshop detects
In Photoshop, open Preferences > Performance and review the graphics processor and memory information. Check whether the GPU is listed and whether Use Graphics Processor is enabled. Adobe notes that a grayed-out option may indicate the GPU does not meet requirements. If the option turns off after a crash, a graphics driver issue may be involved. Adobe’s GPU troubleshooting guidance explains the relevant checks.

Performance preferences also show Available RAM and an Ideal Range. Adobe says Photoshop uses 70% of available RAM by default and advises against allocating more than 85% of system memory to Photoshop: the operating system and other applications still need memory. The default allocation does not mean all that memory is free for every project.

System requirements establish whether a configuration meets Adobe’s stated baseline; they are not a performance benchmark for your particular computer. Responsiveness depends on how much memory is available, GPU support, document size and complexity, Photoshop preferences, other active applications, plug-ins, connected devices, storage and where files are stored. Adobe’s performance guidance and slow-performance troubleshooting also identify high-resolution displays and network-drive latency as factors to consider.
RAM matters because Photoshop may need to work with image information too large to keep entirely in memory. Adobe explains that Photoshop uses scratch storage to read and write image information when there is not enough RAM, and that memory access is faster than disk access. A fast SSD can help with storage-dependent work, but it is not a substitute for adequate RAM.
Quick Recap
- More demanding work: Large or complex documents, a 4K-or-higher display, several memory-heavy applications, or multiple plug-ins can make the recommended specifications more relevant than the minimum.
- Storage location: If a workflow uses scratch storage or files on a network drive, storage speed and network latency may affect responsiveness.
- Shared resources: Available RAM can be lower than installed RAM when other apps or background tasks are using memory.
Use this checklist before upgrading
- Record your software version. Note the Photoshop version and operating-system version. Adobe’s supported versions information identifies current 27.x and prior 26.x versions available through Creative Cloud Desktop and describes their support status. Compare your installed or planned version with its matching requirements.
- Compare the platform-specific specifications. Check supported OS, processor or chip, RAM, GPU API and memory, display resolution, and free storage against Adobe’s matching table. Distinguish minimum requirements from recommended values.
- Confirm Photoshop sees the hardware. If the application is installed, use Help > System Info and review Preferences > Performance for its detected GPU and memory information.
- If it meets requirements but feels slow, investigate first. Review available memory and preferences, update graphics drivers where appropriate, and try your usual workflow with files stored locally. Note whether large documents, a high-resolution display, other active applications, plug-ins or connected devices coincide with slowdowns.
- Check upgradeability before shopping. Identify the exact computer model and verify whether its RAM or storage can be upgraded, and which parts it accepts. Adobe’s general SSD recommendation does not establish that a particular drive fits or is compatible with your computer.
