Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: As of October 4, 2026, Google has not published a model-by-model eligibility list or a checker, so you cannot confirm that a particular Chromebook will transition. Google says many newer commercial Chromebook models will be capable of upgrading, but it has not yet identified which ones or explained the migration process.
How to check your Chromebook’s eligibility
- Find the exact model name or model number. Record the device’s specific model, not just its manufacturer or a label such as Chromebook Plus. Google has not said those broad labels determine eligibility.
- Check Google’s official migration guidance. Review Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education announcement and the Googlebook FAQ for an eligibility list and migration instructions. Google says those details will be shared later; neither page currently provides a model lookup tool.
- Treat the result as unconfirmed until Google names your model. Having the exact model ready helps you check future guidance, but searching for it now cannot establish eligibility.
Google has not published eligibility rules based on Chromebook Plus status, processor, purchase year, update-expiration date, or manufacturer. Do not treat any of those as proof that a device qualifies.

What Google has confirmed—and what it has not
Google’s administrator guidance says, “Many newer commercial Chromebook models will be capable of upgrading to Googlebook OS. Details on migration paths and device eligibility will be shared at a later date.” That points to possible upgrades for some newer models, not all Chromebooks, and does not confirm any individual model.

Googlebook is a new category that combines Android technology with ChromeOS desktop foundations. Google calls it “a new premium category, not a forced migration.” The first-wave hardware partners are Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo; a Chromebook’s brand alone does not show that it can transition.

Does not qualifying—or not knowing—mean your Chromebook stops working?
No. Google says existing Chromebook support continues through each device’s supported lifetime. Its administrator guidance says ChromeOS devices will continue receiving regular updates and security patches through mid-2034. Google also says a transition path is planned for qualifying devices purchased today whose 10-year support lifecycle extends beyond 2034.
Those are general support assurances, not confirmation of Googlebook OS eligibility. Your Chromebook’s own update-support period depends on its model, and that date is separate from whether it can transition. Check Google’s device-specific support information for your Chromebook’s update period.

What schools and businesses should check
Consumer availability does not establish a fleet migration plan. Google says the 2026 Googlebook launch is for personal consumer use and does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. It plans to begin rolling out comprehensive Googlebook management capabilities in the second half of 2027.

A new licensing structure will apply to new Googlebooks or migrated devices; further licensing and migration details are still to come. Administrators should consult Google’s fleet guidance and their organization’s device administrator before making plans.

Three different questions to keep separate
- Will my current Chromebook keep receiving support? Google says devices continue through their supported lifetimes; check the support period for the exact model.
- Can my current Chromebook transition to Googlebook OS? Google says many newer commercial models may be capable, but has not yet published which models or how migration works.
- Can I buy a new Googlebook instead? That is a separate purchase decision, not evidence that an existing Chromebook is eligible. Google’s product announcements describe the new category and its first-wave hardware partners: Introducing Googlebook, designed for Gemini Intelligence and Googlebook is here and ready for pre-order.
