If a Gemini Skill does not behave like its original Gem, first confirm that the Skill is active in the same product surface, then compare its instructions and reference files, check feature and account limits, and run both workflows against the same prompts. A migration can preserve much of a Gem’s setup without guaranteeing that every feature or setting works identically.
Start by identifying where the mismatch happens
Write down the product surface where you see the difference: the Gemini app, a Google Workspace app, or another platform. Note whether you selected the Skill yourself or expected it to be applied automatically, and whether the issue affects only your account or other users too.

In Gemini, Skills can be invoked directly or applied automatically when relevant, and multiple Skills can be used together, according to Google’s Skills announcement. Check that the intended Skill is active and that another Skill is not contributing competing instructions.
Also check which Gemini surface you are using. Google Workspace Help says Skills in Workspace apps do not currently sync with Skills in the Gemini app. A similarly named workflow in one surface may therefore have a different setup or activation state in another: Google Workspace’s transition guidance.

Compare the Skill with the original Gem
Review the Gem and Skill side by side. Compare the name and description, instructions, examples, uploaded knowledge files, and required response format. A difference in any of these can change the result even when the two workflows have similar names.
- Instructions: Check that the Skill still contains the rules that defined the Gem’s behavior, including constraints and the order of steps.
- Examples and output format: Confirm that examples, formatting requirements, and any expected structure were carried over.
- Reference files: Verify that the necessary files are present, readable, and contain the information the prompt depends on.
Google says supported files can transition with existing Gems. If you move files manually, Google’s guidance says to download them individually before uploading them to a Skill; GitHub files are currently unsupported in Gemini Skills. See Google’s Gemini Help page on the Gems-to-Skills transition for current migration details.

For a file-backed workflow, OpenAI’s general GPT troubleshooting guidance recommends text-forward source material, direct prompts that refer to relevant material, and keeping behavior rules in instructions while using knowledge files as references. Those are useful diagnostic practices, not evidence that Gemini and ChatGPT retrieve files in the same way: OpenAI’s GPT troubleshooting guide.
Check for features the Skill cannot use
A migrated workflow may rely on a Gem feature that is not available in Skills. Google’s Gemini Help currently lists Canvas, Deep Research, Create video, Create music, and Guided learning among the features not yet supported in Skills. If the original Gem depended on one of them, the behavior difference may be a product limitation rather than a faulty instruction. Check the current Gemini transition help for updates.
For ChatGPT Skills, availability, installation, and syncing depend on the product surface and account or workspace settings; workspace administrators can control access. Consult OpenAI’s Skills in ChatGPT guidance and your organization’s settings if a Skill or capability is missing. These ChatGPT details apply to ChatGPT, not Gemini.
Run a controlled comparison
Use the same prompt in the original Gem and the Skill, preferably one you know the Gem handled reliably. Then try a harder case that tests a meaningful edge of the workflow. Migration guidance from OpenAI recommends checking a familiar task and a harder one, along with tools and capability settings: Moving your custom GPT workflows.
- Start a fresh interaction in each workflow and confirm which Gem or Skill is active.
- Submit the same short, representative prompt to both.
- Compare whether each has access to the same relevant source information and tools, and whether the response follows the requested format.
- Try a harder prompt to see whether the difference is limited to one case or reflects a broader capability gap.
- If you change an instruction or replace a file, change only one thing and repeat the prompt. This makes it easier to identify what affected the result.
If instructions appear to conflict or the output varies unpredictably, simplify the rules, remove duplicates, and make multi-step directions explicit. OpenAI’s GPT troubleshooting guide also recommends adding examples when they improve consistency and testing small changes in Preview: Troubleshooting GPTs.

Google’s published transition schedule is account-specific and subject to gradual rollout. Its Gemini Apps Help says Gems are scheduled to leave personal Google accounts in November 2026, Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts in March 2027, and education accounts in June 2027. The Workspace transition page lists Skills starting in Workspace on October 5, 2026 and in the Gemini app on October 13, 2026. Check the current official notices for your account type and surface rather than assuming the dates apply uniformly: Gemini Apps Help and Workspace Help.

Google says remaining Gems will automatically transition into Skills when Gems go away. Workspace guidance says migrated Skills will arrive as inactive drafts that creators need to review and activate; it also says names, descriptions, custom instructions, uploaded knowledge files, and sharing settings are retained. Google advises rebuilding high-priority Gems early so you can review their behavior before relying on the transition.
Escalate with a useful record
If the mismatch remains after these checks, collect details that distinguish a configuration issue from a platform or access issue:
- The exact prompt and the expected and actual responses.
- The product surface, whether the workflow was selected or applied automatically, and whether other users see the same behavior.
- The Skill’s name, relevant instruction changes, and the names of files it relies on.
- The account or workspace context and when the problem began.
Use Google’s current Gemini Help or Workspace administrator guidance for a Google rollout or access issue, and the relevant OpenAI Help Center guidance for a ChatGPT Skill issue. The published guidance does not identify one escalation channel that applies to every platform.
